Things to Do

New for Nature There is so much that is new at Phillip Island’s premier nature and wildlife destination, Phillip Island Nature Parks. Take a virtual journey to the frozen continent of Antarctica, enjoy the thrill of a high-speed boat ride and witness the magic of the world’s smallest penguins waddling past you at the famous Penguin Parade. It’s all in a day’s fun at the Nature Parks. Travel from Phillip Island, across the wild Southern Ocean to the awe-inspiring landscapes of the frozen continent at the new ‘Antarctic Journey’ at the Nobbies. This immersive virtual journey uses hands‑on, interactive exhibits to transport you into the wonderful world of nature at its most spectacular. You will feel humbled by majestic scenes rolling across the giant screens. Then, using the magic of cutting edge technology you can interact with playful penguins, enormous killer whales and inquisitive seals — it’s just like being there. For a little more adventure on the high seas, embark on a high-speed EcoBoat Tour. The thrilling ride takes you past Phillip Island’s remote and rugged coastline right to the doorstep of Australia’s largest population of fur seals. At sunset, make a pilgrimage to witness the wonder of the world’s smallest penguins arriving home after a day at sea fishing. This magical natural experience continues to capture the hearts of all ages from across the globe. Choose a self-guided option or join a tour led by dedicated rangers. The new ‘Penguins Plus’ viewing experience offers close, beachfront viewing or, in an Australian-first, you can go underground and come face-to-face with the penguins as they walk past you to their burrows.

Good To Know… • Phillip Island’s little penguins are the world’s smallest and stand about 33 centimetres high. • Maximise your penguin viewing by watching them cross the beach from the viewing stands, then up close from the boardwalks as they arrive home to their burrows. • Phillip Island’s little penguin research program has been running since 1968. • The Nature Parks is not for profit and your visit helps to support the award winning conservation programs.

Real Life Adventure Mum is out with pirates somewhere in the Caribbean, your sister’s in the dinosaur playroom and you’ve lost Dad completely. Perhaps he’s braving a gold mine under a thunderous waterfall, meeting a koala, encountering a crocodile or even shearing a sheep? At Maru Koala and Animal Park in Grantville, out‑of-this-world adventures happen each day. Start by challenging yourself to a round of 18 holes with a difference. Dodging waterfalls, five-metre great white sharks and lifesize pirates is par for the course in Pirate Pete’s Mini Golf challenge. Safely back on dry land, get going on an Aussie wildlife safari with daily shows and demonstrations by the keepers. You can also choose a close encounter of the furry kind. Pat a koala and capture the moment forever with a professional photo souvenir. Meet and interact with the dingoes and enjoy the experience of hand feeding the kangaroos and holding a baby joey — there are even rare albino animals in the mob. And, money raised from the sale of the feed goes towards running a wildlife hospital on site. Many more animals abound, and the brave can get all wrapped up in a python while those who prefer to steer clear of reptiles can have a conversation with the cheeky parrots. Back at the ranch, take in a sheep shearing show before collapsing in the licensed Homestead Bistro for a mighty home cooked meal prepared by the chef — but hang on, where’s Dad?

Good To Know… • You can soon visit Maru’s exciting new crocodile exhibit. • This attraction started as Maru Craft over 30 years ago as a small craft shop and is now proudly run by the same family. • You can enjoy just one, or all attractions at a discounted rate with an ‘All Day Pass’. • Maru is a licensed wildlife shelter and helps ill, orphaned and sick animals from the wild by providing treatment and rehabilitation.

Magic, Mazes’N More There’s nothing the staff at A Maze’N Things like more than fun. Except to see you having it of course! You almost need a passport to enter this whole new world of fun and excitement. Indoors and in all weather, travel to ‘Puzzle Island’ and prepare to have your mind bent, your belly ache from laughing and your heart in your mouth as you leap from the ‘Look Out’ slide. Witness people shrinking and growing before your eyes, marvel at the crazy mirror maze and defy gravity. You might even lose your head, but don’t worry it’s all just an illusion. There is also the very new Karel’s Magic Manor. Walk through the waterfall to an astonishing house of magic and mystery with caves, enchanting rabbits, a time machine, flying chandeliers, a scare area and the chance to make your very own magic movie. Outdoors, discover the centrepiece of this a-mazeing attraction. Navigate the twists, turns and confusion of the bewildering two kilometre labyrinth. It might take minutes, even hours, but it is certain that you will have loads of laughs and fun as you master the maze (or use the emergency exits). After the maze, fuel up in the café before taking on the challenge of the unusual ‘Maxi Mini Golf’ course — with 19 holes just to be quirky. Next to the golf you can discover your inner adventurer and accept the ‘SkyTrail’ challenge. This new high-flying rope course elevates you over ten metres and is safe, fun and family friendly. So, pack your sense of humour and spirit of adventure and be transported to a whole new world of a-maze-ing.

Good To Know… • If you laid out the maze end to end and plank by plank it would reach from the Penguin Parade to San Remo (about 22 kilometres). • Over 56,000 nails, bolts and screws were used to make the Giant Timber Maze. • More than one million people have braved Australia’s highest indoor vertical ‘Look Out’ slide. • Karels Magic Manor was the home of a Dutch magician who reportedly disappeared January 30th 1907, during a performance as the Princess Theatre in Melbourne.

Delicious Fun! You are standing before a waterfall — made entirely of chocolate. This must be a delicious dream… Chocoholics, this is for you! Phillip Island Chocolate Factory takes chocolate loving to a whole new level. Enter the factory and be prepared for a journey for all your senses. In the self-guided World of Chocolate exhibit learn about the humble cocoa bean, the raw ingredient of the world’s favourite food. Watch the talented chocolatiers at work and be amazed at the daring creations they have concocted. It’s chocolate — but not as you know it. Wander through a gallery where all the famous artworks are pure chocolate and marvel at the two-metre chocolate statue of Michelangelo’s ‘David’. You simply won’t believe the chocolate mosaic of Dame Edna Everage. The exhibit is full of fascinating facts and fun things to do. Try to lift a one-tonne choc block or play with an entire chocolate village, complete with working trains! The newest attraction is a tribute to factory founder ‘Panny’ and his family. The amazing 3D animation follows them for the day as they live and breathe chocolate. Of course there are plenty of opportunities for free samples and the chance to win chocolate in our sideshow alley — you can even design and produce your own weird and wonderful chocolate designs and have them delivered to you via conveyor belt on Panny’s Amazing Swirl Machine. The relaxing café also offers an extensive range of chocolate treats and delicious meals. Drawing on Panny’s Indian and Malaysian heritage, there is a range of superb curries and the satay wraps are famous! And, before you leave, visit the store to sample and select from over 190 varieties made on site. Edible souvenirs — it doesn’t get better than that!

Good To Know… • 400 kilograms of chocolate thunders over the world’s largest Chocolate Waterfall every three minutes! • The Dame Edna Everage mosaic is made from 12,000 chocolate truffles. • The huge parking area means a hassle-free arrival. • Your entry ticket is even made of chocolate — yum!

I Caught It, They Cooked It! Remember the thrill of catching your first fish — or is that still on your bucket list? At Rhyll Trout and Bush Tucker Farm, fishing is just the beginning. Even learners can reel in a fish in the indoor rainforest pool. Outdoors, trout shimmer tantalisingly below the surface in the slightly more challenging waters of the tree-lined lake. When you land your big one, the friendly team can transform it into a bush tucker feast featuring the ancient flavours of herbs grown on site. How about lemon myrtle tempura fish and chips? Mouth watering yet?

Good To Know… • This award winning attraction is Victoria’s only trout farm that can create a restaurant quality meal from your prize catch. • The Bush Tucker Trail winds through three hectares showcasing over 30 native varieties.

Paddock to Pamper Clucking can be heard from miles around as 1,000 chickens forage in open paddocks. These happy hens are one part of Bimbadeen Farm Experiences, where for a few hours or a few days you can experience life on a special working property. Nearly everyone free ranges on this family‑run, 340 acre working farm. You too can roam amongst the cows and calves as they happily graze next to the sheep, pigs and two resident alpacas, Freddie and Eddie. Get your hands dirty with some farm chores, enjoy a tour or simply relax in the eco-friendly, self-contained accommodation in secluded surrounds. You can also enjoy a meal of true paddock to plate produce — or take something away from their Farm Store!

Good To Know… • Since the 1980s, the family has planted over 40,000 trees and created a wildlife corridor. • The property features the 52-million-year-old Hurricane Hill.

The Real Deal Cooee! Everyone listen up! There is so much fun to be had at historic Warrook Farm and you’re all invited to join in! The cows need milking and the kangaroos are kicking up dust as they hop in for a tasty treat. The sheepdogs are champing at the bit to round up the sheep ready for shearing. Your help is needed, so roll up your sleeves cobbers, it’s time to get to work… Join in a 130-year-old tradition at Warrook and try your hand at farm activities old and new. Originally part of the larger ‘Yallock Station’ in the 1850s, the working farm is now 165 acres with sheep, cows, goats and more. You will love trying hand-milking the dairy cows and feeding the friendly Friesian calves. Over in the paddock, the talented Kelpie sheepdogs are doing what they do best and expertly bringing the sheep into the shearing shed. Did you know that a fully trained sheep dog is worth around $7000? Stroll through the animal nursery and fauna park and take a few selfies that your friends will love. Over the years, the team has planted thousands of native trees and now the landscape is alive with the chatter of colourful birds and the quacking of ducks on the dam. Now the chores are done, have a go at cracking a stockwhip while the billy boils and the damper browns over the coals. Or if you prefer, enjoy a meal in the café or licensed restaurant — Warrook is famous for their scones and jam with lashings of cream.

Good To Know… • The farm is the perfect halfway stop between Melbourne and Phillip Island. • You can take a self-guided tour or choose the hop on, hop off scenic wagon tour with your Aussie farmer guide. • In the 1980s, Warrook was renowned throughout Australia as a prestigious cattle stud for Murray Grey and Hereford cattle. • If you learn to crack the stockwhip correctly, the ‘crack’ you hear means that you’ve broken the sound barrier.

Circuit of Champions It’s hallowed ground, a place where legends are made and champions born. Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, home of internationally renowned motorsports, is a main player on the world stage, but did you know that there is an open invitation to you and the whole family to enjoy hours of heart-stopping fun? The picturesque world-class circuit features ocean views, challenging corners and super fast straights. Just imagine standing on the winner’s podium where the greats of motor racing have stood before you. You smile triumphantly for the cameras and your ‘hero moment’ is captured for all time, guaranteeing you eternal bragging rights. This special opportunity is part of the ‘Guided Circuit Tour’ where you follow in the footsteps of racing superstars. Experience a thrilling Grand Prix sound simulation and be granted access to exciting and exclusive restricted areas such as the control tower, media centre and pit roof. Then, get behind the wheel to enjoy the exhilaration of the Go Karts. Challenge your friends, family or workmates to some hot laps on the 750 metre scale replica of the main circuit. And yes, this is a game the whole family can play. Little budding drivers won’t be left out because they can tackle the course on a tandem kart. These mini versions feature dual controls and allow all ages to get right into the heart of the fun and action. Printed timesheets are given out so you can show your mates. If that’s not enough to get your heart racing, how about three heart-in-your-mouth ‘Hot Laps’ in an authentic racing vehicle? Let their resident racing driver strap you in for the ride of your life and if you didn’t already consider yourself an adrenalin junkie, you will be after this experience! The finely tuned racing machine will lift off the start line and defy gravity as you hug the coastal curves of this white knuckle course that has challenged the very best. Take a sharp turn from the pulse-racing thrills and spills of high-speed racing and stroll through tranquil water gardens. Take in panoramic views of the circuit and beyond. The unique location offers rare glimpses of a remotely rugged and beautiful part of Phillip Island’s coast and across the ever-changing waters of Bass Strait.

The circuit is part of a long history of motorsport. Take a wander through the fascinating ‘History of Motorsport’ exhibition to fully appreciate the major role that Phillip Island has played in the industry’s rich past. Fascinating displays showcase the dawn of the sport starting with the honourable story of the island hosting the very first Australian Grand Prix in 1928. Images and legendary racing vehicles will capture your imagination as you are carried along to the thrills of modern racing. Also within the Visitor Centre is Australia’s largest four-lane Grand Prix slot car track where drivers of all ages can test their skill on an exact circuit replica. And just when you think the adrenalin might be fading, think again. Take a race around the circuit in the clever ‘Simulator Race Centre’. Hit top gear as you go flat out down Gardner Straight, cleverly master Doohan Corner, slide through Stoner, thread your way through Siberia and slipstream up the back straight. Watch out for the hairpin at the bottom of Lukey Heights. Who will be the champion today? When your race has been run, relax in the Champion’s Bar & Cafe and enjoy great coffee, fresh meals and the best burgers in town. Top off your visit with some official merchandise before you leave with a mind full of happy memories of the thrills, spills and fun of your day of champions.

Good To Know… • The Circuit is 4.449 kilometres long. • Motor racing on Phillip Island began in 1928 with the running of the 100 Miles Road Race, which became known as the first Australian Grand Prix. • You can ride your pushbike around the circuit on special days. • The Circuit hosted its first round of the Superbike World Championship in 1990.

The wonder and beauty of plants punctuate this constantly changing exhibit.

Going Underground For nearly sixty years, coal ruled the town of Wonthaggi. Mining for ‘black gold’ was hard and dirty and the rapid growth of the industry transformed the makeshift tent city into a thriving town. Today the State Coal Mine allows you to become part of this heroic story and to experience life at the coalface. A shrill mine whistle signalled the beginning and end of each shift and it still sounds each day at noon. This fitting tribute echoes the legacy of the significant role the mine played between 1909 and 1968. Now managed by Parks Victoria, it has been faithfully restored for visitors. The new Visitor Centre sets the scene by cleverly taking you into the life of the mine and its workers through film, photos and interactive displays. All of the above ground areas of the reserve are free to explore. Follow the heritage trail that winds through historic buildings and gardens where you can give ‘Cobber’ the pit pony a scratch and climb aboard an old steam locomotive. Going underground on one of the daily tours is an unforgettable experience. Equipped with your helmet and headlamp, tackle the challenging subterranean world of tunnels the miners faced each day. Many guides actually worked at the site and are proud to share their stories. Back in daylight, enjoy a meal or coffee in the friendly, airy café that provides meals for all styles and budgets. Exploring the only historic coal mine experience in the Southern Hemisphere provides an unforgettable opportunity to walk in the boots of the state’s determined miners and to understand their amazing stories above and below ground.

Good To Know… • Would you believe there are nearly 5,000 kilometres of mine tunnels beneath the township of Wonthaggi? • The underground temperature remains a constant 16 degrees Celsius all year round. • This is a great place to let the kids run free while you enjoy a relaxed coffee and lunch. • Operating from 1909 to 1968, the State Coal Mine produced almost 17 million tonnes of coal for Victoria’s industries and railways.
