Reference Letter for Phillip NAUDE I am writing this letter at the request of Phillip Naude who is now seeking employment as a recent Master of Architecture graduate. I have known Phillip since two years in my capacity of teacher, supervisor of his research thesis and design and program director at Griffith University. Phillip has not only excellent skills and competences in architecture, but also demonstrates independent thinking and interests, with a very high level of creativity and exceptional problem-solving approach. As our top Master student in 2017 and 2018, his projects also demonstrate the high level of maturity he has reached at such early stage of his career, supported by excellent organisational and communication skills. His conceptual and graphic skills are outstanding.

Moreover Phillip is also an excellent team worker, very supportive and who can react with

My thesis undertaken in my final year of the Masters of Architecture program saw me investigating the current issues surrounding the effective land use of airport property and the link between airport and surrounding communities in Australia. Post research, a design for a new Gold Coast airport master plan was proposed including the emphasis on the land side atrium and entrance spaces along with a form exploration and re planning of the surrounding land to be more appropriate. Thus the design becomes a destination hub and becomes a unique aerotropolis model for the Gold Coast.

context Globally, it is recognised that most airports serve their primary function as a fulcrum for national and international travel. However, in the last decade, due to exponential technological advancements, the growth of global commerce and an ever growing competitive tourism market, the function of airports has developed to act as such more than just a facility of standardised processes (Wang et al., 2013). The growing demand and use of air travel has led to greater needs for more efficient services internally and on an urban scale.

In the Gold Coast alone, the expected passenger growth will be from 6 million in 2016 to 16 million by 2037 (GCA Master Plan, 2017).

The Concept

Macro Design Strategies

The concept was derived from multiple factors

including the site context through analysis and experience along with Jan Gehl’s underlying master-planning principles. Firstly, Gold Coast is unique in its setting with a linear flow of settlement along the coast. With nearly all year round sunshine and a coastal lifestyle of surf and fun, a naturally calm yet constantly moving atmosphere presents itself. This contributed to the eventual understanding that the concept would be based around fluidity.

The exploded axonometric attempts to split the various

levels within the design to attempt to simplify the rigorous program internally. True integration of the new airport is achieved through placing the airport over the proposed tram line and creating a truly unique arrival experience encouraging locals to interact with the space as well. Simply defined, the ground floor is for public access and passenger check in. The first floor is the most active space and contains various activities and features along with the arrivals hall. On the second floor, passengers can experience lounges and more activities with a focus on views back towards the ocean over the park, as well as the departure gate lounge. Finally on the third floor, locals and passengers alike can enjoy the rooftop bar whilst watching planes take off over the hinterland.

Walkability

With a podium that wraps around the natural flow of the tram line and a building that extends in a twisting motion, a continuous language is evident throughout the design. A thoroughfare extends from the tram stop toward a central courtyard plaza that can cater for various programs such as shows, food markets or simply a breakaway space for workers and residents.

Located on the corner of Scarborough and Queen Street, the proposal for Southport’s newest mixed use building stands as a gateway to a globally recognised centre for the future of the Gold Coast CBD. With a transit focused design, the building is specified to integrate with the existing and adjacent tram stop for local residents, professionals and tourists.

Activity A key component of the design was to link the existing tram stop with the program of the building due to its important corner location in Southport.

Creating large thoroughfares encourage a welcoming space for commuters along with intriguing programmatic features inside the site. A flexible courtyard with a market space and various retail stores ensure the space is constantly drawing users into the design with particular emphasis of the flow of people through the space. Furthermore, residents of the building have an activated ground floor space and can interact with members of the community with quick access to the rest of the Southport CBD.

A proposal for the new STEAM (School of Transport and Planning, Engineering and Architecture) located on the Griffith University, Gold Coast Campus. The program was defined for a future, dedicated school for the four disciplines to come together and have a cohesive facility. The intention of the project is to bring the four disciplines together to work collaboratively and encourage future partnerships beyond university. As an educational facility of the future, it is assumed that the education system has evolved with time to provide spaces that are more appropriate for the style of learning for a different generation of students. Large, multi use studio spaces with workshops, virtual reality rooms and plenty of meeting spaces fills up the majority of the internal program. The built form is constructed to represent this flexibility through a terraced design and a collection of multiple buildings that are situated around a central courtyard that features as the primary circulation space for students and academics

Education The STEAM building is designed from the perspective of a student in the current education system. However, the twist is the design is an idealistic version of how the student perceives the future of education or the way they would have like their education to be like.

STEAM 2048 | Advanced Arch Design Studio 1 | 4th Year

A courtyard space is created to develop a hub within the dedicated creative campus. Easily accessible spaces and a public ground floor with various walkways and paths converging as a way of symbolising the collaboration of various disciplines. Large and flexible working studios allow seamless integration of disciplines with workshops and teaching spaces all having access to outdoor balconies or a view of the green courtyard.

Teaching in the near future will be heavily orientated around technology, so allowing spaces to be open and high, students can experience holographic and virtual reality scenarios comfortably. One of my more memorable projects not necessarily for the design itself but more so for the purpose of the design. With the recent wakes of earthquakes in New Zealand causing a lot of destruction and effecting thousands of people, designing a memorial space for them and the public was challenging. However, the project was thoroughly enjoyed and placed heavy emphasis on the publics experience through the spaces as a reflection of the journey of an earthquake victim.

Skylight The focus of the design was the overall journey throughout. A symbol of the experience a person would go through in an earthquake. With a concrete dominant form, an angled facade is created to resemble crevices of light peaking through the cracks of broken rubble. With the play of light within the space, as time passes, a unique pattern will be reflected the interior creating a unique experience for all. A magnificent space, with large dominant structure reinforces the motif of stability in a situation such as this. A reminder that there is protection and support.

Alongside my studies, my passion surrounding various other outlets in the creative industry caught my attention. New found hobbies such as photography and videography became part of my skill set in design. With skills acquired in architecture school and through my own personal study, I began exploring other design avenues such as graphic design and even started my own apparel line. I handled the entire process from website and business card design to the sourcing of manufacturers overseas, importing and eventually marketing and selling the apparel. All these experiences have been a product of but also further help enhance my eye for design and has helped provide me with a range of skills to apply to future architecture works and develop a unique style.
