oices rise from the Blue on the west sideline of Phelps Stadium: “Yes, yes, yes we do, we’ve got spirit, how ’bout you?” The response from the Red on the east sideline: “Yes, yes, yes we do, we’ve got spirit, how ’bout you?” This back and forth chant continues for several minutes. It always finishes with both sides screaming, “We’ve got more!” This spirited display of pride further showcases why the Andover–Exeter rivalry, the oldest between prep schools in the nation, is arguably the most passionate. It’s not just about two teams facing off in a slate of athletic contests on a Saturday afternoon. It is also about two storied schools going head-tohead in a battle of school spirit. It all started with a baseball game in 1878, when Exeter trounced Andover 12–1. In the fall of that same year, Andover’s football team got the best of Exeter in a 22–0 rout. Initially, these contests were only casual games between two schools. But over the years —  132 of them — they have blossomed into a historic rivalry. Regardless of the sport, the teams and fans look forward to the games between the two adversaries right down to the JV level. The home fields alternate each year, and this year it’s Andover’s turn to roll out the welcome mat. An army of Red invades the Blue campus to cheer on boys and girls soccer, field hockey, volleyball, and football teams as they battle it out in contests that usually have playoff implications. The scene is one of excitement and tradition. Blue Keys and Red Bandits run around campus leading cheers as mobs of students move from game to

game to watch their school take on its rival.  The  sound of horns, bells, whistles, and, of course, cheers fill the air. Tailgaters parked next to the action leave the faint smell of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs in the crisp fall air. Students surround the fields dressed in school colors, with fresh paint decorating their faces. Parents, townspeople, faculty and alumni on both sides are right in the mix of students, entertained by the fervor and zeal of the younger fans. On the field, the competition only gets more intense, as games are usually close until the finish and are always action-packed. Last fall, monsoon-like weather roared through Exeter during the games and affected play in almost every sport. While Andover volleyball prevailed in the comfort of the gym, girls soccer

didn’t even get the chance to play on the puddle-filled field, and boys soccer played to a 0–0 tie in a slow-paced game. Andover field hockey wasn’t fazed, as the girls won 3–0. Exeter football took care of business in a 31–14 rout, under the lights, the second straight win for Exeter. Although Andover solidly dominates the ancient rivalry, the school does not want to see Exeter storm the Andover turf as it did in 2008. This year’s games may determine who makes the playoffs, but even if they don’t, a victory can make either team forget about a disappointing season. Whoever wins these games has bragging rights for an entire year. —Chris Cameron ’11 Sports Editor, The Phillipian 1

he cross-country team’s greatest strength is unity. More specifically, our greatest strength is pack running. The mentality of building on each other, carrying your teammates with you in a surge, and intimidating other racers have proved to be enormously effective. Our strongest pack lies in the varsity squad, in our second through fifth runners, consisting of senior co-captain John Holliman, uppers Max Payson and Liam Kinney, and prep Sam Gray. They are able to pull each other along the first two miles and effectively break the opposing team’s morale. The top of our JV as well, upper Caleb Fujimori, prep John Kennealy, and seniors Alex Bhasavanich and Zach Drach, all are able to race as a unit. But despite our strengths everywhere else and the great strides we’ve made, we know there is room for improvement on the gap between the different packs. Andover is without a doubt our strongest opponent this year, and beating them won’t be a matter of luck. If we run hard during practice and train intelligently in our packs, we can surely put up a good show. Andover’s strength is also in packs, with about 15 seconds separating their first and fifth runners, so breaking that up is the name of the game. —Drew Glicker 2

ast year, without any seniors on the varsity cross-country team, our young  group  mustered  up its courage and put its best foot forward. Then, we each put the other foot forward. We repeated this again and again, a whole bunch of times, as quickly as possible. We ran forward, forward, forward better than every team we faced. Each footstep brought us closer to catching the feat we all wanted most: Interschols. But our undefeated season lost its footing in a 4-point loss at the end of the season, at Interschols. Our team returns this year without our beloved Coach Stableford, but the man with a love of ornithological mythology has left Andover XC with a hawk over its shoulder. Twelve of his 14 letter-winners, including all seven varsity members, have returned. Our depth and talent fall into the skillful hands of Coach Jeffrey Domina. For every cross-country runner, the course ahead is long and narrow. Two thoughts jockey in a competitor’s mind: “I want to catch that guy,” and “I want to stop  and  walk like a normal human.” The  first thought pushes the second,  and the feeling of an inflamed

s of this writing, Phillips Exeter girls cross country currently holds a record of 2–1. With a lot of returning runners, varsity is tightknit. Unlike previous years, the varsity squad has contributors of all ages. Two lowers, Marisa Bhargava and Meghan Turner, have had solid performances in all the races so far. Uppers Christine McEvoy, Rania Garde, and Jen Liu have also contributed strong performances. The strength of this team lies in its pack running. Captains Sarah Burke and Christine Kong have emphasized the importance of this tactic in practices and races; so far the results have been favorable. he Andover girls cross-country team has had a successful season thus far. Undefeated as of press time, the talented team of 42 looks ahead to Interschols, hoping to bring home the title of New England Prep School Division 1 Champions as they have for the last five years in a row. This year, the depth of the team makes it an intimidating force. The season began with a group of 13 girls participating in the Codfish Bowl in Franklin Park in Boston where Andover took 10th place out of 23 competing teams. Most everyone achieved Coach Nancy Lang’s goal of “crossing the line with a smile.” The following week, Andover hosted its annual Developmental Invitational. Seeded against Exeter, Choate, Loomis Chaffee, and Kimball Union Academy, Andover won both the varsity and junior varsity races. Kate Bulger and captain Caitlin Kingston ran the race together, taking first place with a time of 19:49. At the next meet, Andover faced Choate on their home course. With holes in the top group due to injury and illness, Andover still managed to pull out on top with a score of 26–31. Racing on St. Paul’s home course, the girls won both the varsity and junior varsity races, with a perfect score of

his year, Exeter water polo brings a diverse set of athletes to the pool, including seniors Kyle DeLand, Matt Bell, and captain Marc Gazda, as well as uppers Brooks Reavill, Avery Reavill, Jan Shi, and Leo Brossollet. With lower John Moon in the field and Max Drach in goal,  Big Red is a powerful force in the tank. The team has gotten to where it is now by a balance of aggressive offense and attentive defense. Many young athletes have stepped up to the plate this year to help Bear Polo become a threat. Coached by Don Mills, the squad eagerly looks on the coming season with enthusiasm and confidence. As always, Andover and Exeter have played close, competitive games when pitted against each other. In this, their second match-up of the season, it looks like it will be no different. —Marc Gazda

ater polo, the oldest Olympic team sport, combines the endurance of swimming, the finesse of soccer, and the physicality of rugby. It was played by many of the greatest swimmers in history, including Olympians Mark Spitz, Matt Biondi, Pablo Morales, and John Naber. The Andover men’s water polo team appears this year to be reaping the benefits of the past three rebuilding years, as varsity coach David Fox teaches smart, strong water polo. As one of the more senior-heavy teams in the league—many have been playing with one another for the past three years—Andover brings a great level of experience to the pool. The team has a strong sense of unity and teamwork, where from practice to games you can find them cheering on their teammates and motivating each other to excel. Seniors this year include Matthew Mahoney and Dan Larson, co-captains, Austin Novis, Conor Deveney,

Water Polo

Alex Nanda, Ben Morris, Alex Smachlo, and Charlie Oliva. New upper Adam Farrell has contributed significantly to the water polo program and fits right in with the team chemistry. Uppers on the team include: Calvin Aubrey, Andrew Wilson, and Derrick Choi. Henry Kennelly, the one lower on the team, is new to the sport but has lots of promise. Two juniors, Travis Bouscaren and Michael Camarda, are players who will exert a dominant force in the pool in the years to come. The majority of players also swim on the varsity swimming team, which won first place at last year’s championship. This combination bodes well for Andover to be one of the fastest water polo teams in the league. The team’s speed is portrayed through the many counterattacks, drives, and picks set by the team. Our first game against Exeter was lost narrowly 7–5, but we look forward to meeting them again in the traditional Andover-Exeter match-up. —Matthew Mahoney ’11

fter a couple of rebuilding years, we have pulled together a strong team, with leadership from the nine seniors who have been playing together for the past four years. In addition, we have a group of strong underclassmen players who add just as much to the team. It makes for great chemistry, both on and off the field. Coming off last year, where we relied on a strong defense, this year we have been able to incorporate a more dynamic offense, which creates more scoring opportunities than we have had in the past. Speed is one of our strengths, along with our good work ethic. Despite having a few injuries in the middle of the season, the team is hoping to be strong and healthy as we face Andover. ExeterAndover is always a battle, and this year will be no different. With the game being cancelled last year because of bad weather, the anticipation for this game has doubled. We will be ready for the challenge and ready to show off this year’s team. Go Big Red! —Caroline Hayes 8

espite graduation of ten seniors and their goalie, Andover girls soccer returns with a skillful young group of girls determined to be the team to beat. With the combination of its solid back-four defenders, creative midfield, and explosive offense, the team started the season off with an impressive 6–1–1 record. The strong defense starts with Emily Hoyt, a new goalie to the team, who has  proved  her athleticism and talent  this  year with critical saves in important games. Mandi Thran, also skilled in net, is the team’s other goalie. Co-captain Courtney Macdonald contributes her four years’ experience leading the back four each game. Piper Curtis, in center back, is a great ball winner. Outside backs Emily Rademacher and Aly Wayne are both skillful one-on-one defenders. Diana Tchadi and Anjali Krishnamachar further bolster the back four with their toughness. Starting in the center midfield are co-captain Katherine Woonton and

Strikers Leah Humes and Hannah Guzzi have challenged opponents relentlessly this season. Their lightning speed and deft touch have led to many goals for both. Fay Feghali, Angela Batuure, and Katie Kreider round out the Andover attack with their tremendous field vision and touch. he PEA field hockey team is having an awesome season so far. We have a lot of new players, which is a great thing, but the majority of our starters are experienced seniors. Since we’ve played together in the past few seasons, it was easy this fall to jump in and start drills. Our goalie, Emily Hadley, didn’t get to play a lot last season because we had a senior goalie, but she’s a hard worker and defending well this season. Our team has the spirit and determination to work really hard in practice and win games. Our team has different strengths and weaknesses. One thing we’ve been working on is the new self-start rule. Many of the girls are still getting adjusted to it, and it’s taking up some practice time to really get it down. It’s been hard, too, playing on grass, as most of us are used to turf. On the positive side, many on our team play other sports together like hockey and lacrosse, so our passing is phenomenal. Another positive is the fact that we have so much fun in practice on the field together. Moxie is a close-knit team, and the team’s tradi-

The team has relied on a solid core of vets (seniors Caroline Goessling, Hannah Hebl, and uppers Catherine Closmore, Shinri Kamei, Anna Lane, Lauren Lee) as well as a host of new talent including post graduate Helen Brumley, Xi Chen, Paula Gaither, Kathleen Larkin, Anna Luy Tan, and Shaitalya Vellanki. Co-captains Caroline Goessling and Hannah Hebl lead the team. When Big Red volleyball comes together as a unit and plays focused and aggressively, they are an unstoppable force. he 2010 Andover volleyball team pushed through setbacks at the beginning of the season to command a strong presence in the New England Prep School League. With a strong core of eight veterans and six new faces, Andover’s squad has deep potential in all areas of the court. Setters Alice Tao, Chelsea Ward, Shelby Carpenter, and Kate Mesrobian, command the team’s offense, while returning hitters Kemi Amurawaiye, Jamie Shenk, Zoe Roschach, and Alexi Bell control the net with their blocks and killer hits. Other crucial additions to the front row include Chioma Ngwudo and Lucia McGloin in the middle-blocker position. Janina Monecke and Amanda Simard are key utility players, alternating play between the outside and opposite positions. The team’s offense relies on the steady chemistry between hitters and setters, picking up points with coordinated quick hits out of the middle and outside and

p top, we  rotate Brian “HartBreaker” Hart, Duncan “HairyMan” McIntire, and Tom “Walkdese” Hallett. Hart leads the team in scoring because he has the speed of a cheetah and the strength of an ox. McIntire uses his fancy footwork to stitch up defenders, while Hallet specializes in top cheddar rips. In the center of the midfield, we have Foti “Achilles” Andreo, known around the league for his nifty dangles. Playing alongside him is co-captain Tyler “Bambi” Williams, who has outgrown his white spots. On the flanks, we rotate Harry “You-Owe-Me-Something” Choee, Nick “Pipe-City” Weigel, Stephen “Steezy” Chan, Mihail “The Workhorse” Eric, Juan-Sebastian “Maradona” Ponce, and Parker “Broseidon” Cadwell. Choee uses his skilled feet to embarrass the opponent. Weigel uses his top-of-the-line speed to streak past defenders. Chan uses his flicks to bamboozle the opposition. Eric is a balanced player who always outworks his opponent. Ponce

In the back, we have Rodolfo “HotRod” Baquerizo Queirolo, co-captain Bubba “Larger-Than-Life” Van Wie, Trent “Decleater” Elmore, and Matt “Ice” Ryan. Queirolo is a stellar one-on-one defender. Van Wie uses his chiseled physique to outmuscle the other team’s attackers. Elmore is excellent in the air. Ryan uses his exceptional pace to get up the sideline and create scoring chances. We also have Adam “Stonewall” Brooks, Marcel “Mach-Z” Brown, Tony “Drip” Karalekas, Henry “The Future” Stevens, and Luke “The Bruiser” Wellington, who have all made great contributions throughout the season. he Boys in Blue can flat out play. Boasting an outstanding group of nine seniors and two top-notch post-graduates, the team, superbly coached by Steve Carr and Ben Salmon, possesses tremendous experience that keeps them cool, collected, and goaloriented. The strong defense leads with goaltender Will Poss, with Jeb Roberts as his back up. The Andover back four is one of the strongest in the league, led by Peter Lee-Kramer and Jakob Rohwer in the center back position. On either side of them, Brian Woonton and Dylan Hawkins shut down any opposing flank play with their unparalleled speed and oneversus-one defending. Mark Adamsson and Connor Soules confidently bolster the back line off the bench. The skilled midfield group dictates the  flow  of  the  game  through  their ball-winning and organization. Captain Michael DiFronzo and Tim Marchese run the middle of the pitch. Marchese’s hat-trick early in the season speaks to his ability, and DiFronzo’s talent in switch-

ing the field and organizing the attack keeps the ball on Andover’s feet. Relieving with fresh legs, some hard working starters are Will Park, Noah Le Gros, Myles O’Neil, and Jonathan Westling. Forwards Tebs Maqubela and Aaron Mentos’ uncanny ability to know where the other is leaves opposing defenses’ heads on a swivel, and the quick pace of Gabo Coredero and Taylor Chin hassles the defenders. s this is written, we are 3–1, scoring tough wins over Loomis Chaffee, Choate, and Worcester Academy.  Our only loss came on the first game of the season to Avon Old Farms. We have matured a lot as a team since then, our strong defense allowing only 12 points a game. Our offense has come a long way since our first game, and finally we are starting to build team chemistry and play as a cohesive unit on both sides of the ball. Our defense, led by our extremely talented defensive line and linebackers, manages to stop most of the runs and create heavy amounts of pressure on the opposing quarterback. QB Joe Joskolski, RB Andreas Robinson, and WR Chris Edgar are the spark-

16

Football plugs on offense. Defensively, DE Zach Hodges, LBs Charlie Murphy, Nick McHugh, and Colby Wilkinson anchor the box, with DBs Justin Norris and Ayo Ekhator holding down the secondary. We have high expectations for the Exeter-Andover game. We think we have an extremely talented squad, and we are only getting better as the season progresses. Any hopes of repeating as New England Champions will only survive if we beat Andover. We must go through Andover in order to potentially repeat as champs. They have a good team, and we have a great team, so we will see what happens on the second Saturday in November this year. Go Big Red! —Ayo Ekhator

he 2010 Andover football team possesses the fierce combination of explosive, quick-paced offense and a relentlessly hard-hitting defense. The team makes up for its paucity in numbers with talent and an indefatigable determination. Andover’s athleticism and dexterity combine a well-rounded offense with a large variety of useful threats. The passing game is lead by quarterback Tommy Shannon who, in two games, has already compiled 452 passing yards. His primary targets are post-graduates Jason Buco, Brendan Rankowitz, and Max Lippe, whose sure hands and unmatched quickness made them key playmakers in the 21–18 win against Choate

Football earlier in the season. Andover’s passing is coupled with a strong running attack led by the toughness and persistence of Tom Szymanski, TJ Hickey, and Joe Kruy. Up front, the offensive line helps lay the foundation for the offense. Anchored by seniors Mike Wincek, Jamie Casselberry, Ricky Marcotte, and Tom Weaver, the offensive line drives opposing defenses back as the Big Blue trots down the field. On the other side of the ball, Andover’s defense succeeds in shutting down opposing offenses time and time again. Flying through the interior, linebackers Szymanski, Hickey, and Kruy stifle opponents’ running game and provide a strong pass rush on blitzes. The defensive

line, lead by Ben Green, Casselberry, and Wincek, consistently generates pressure in the backfield, stopping running backs at the line and resulting in turnovers. The secondary has proved an integral part of the team’s defense. Free safety Sam Lessard and corners Rankowitz and Matt Fothergill effectively stop the opponents’ passing game. Andover remains busy preparing for strong competition in its upcoming games and looks forward to playing against Exeter. With the realization that Exeter comes into the game as Andover’s toughest opponent this year, the team strives to heighten its level of play to come out on top in this historic rivalry. —Malcolm Mason Rodriquez ’11
