Archaeology Explorers

Five full days of educational programming

April 18-22, 2016

Have you always wanted to explore the history of your community? Does the idea of engaging in detective work intrigue you? Are you eager to explore scientific discoveries? Does the thought of being creative and artistic excite you?

Then archaeology may be for you! Join archaeologist Ryan Wheeler for five days in April for the opportunity to explore objects from the Peabody Museum’s collections and to engage in hands-on activities that will bring the past to life.

DON'T JUST LEARN ABOUT ARCHAEOLOGY. . . DO IT! Class highlights Excavate a simulated dig (or a real one weather permitting). Learn about ancient hunting techniques and then use an atlatl to launch a spear. Make and play your own turkey bone flute while you discover music from the distant past. Put your detective skills to the test to identify stone tools found in Andover. Build a LEGO model of your favorite ancient ruin.

Instructor Ryan Wheeler brings over 20 years of archaeological fieldwork and research to his role as Director of the Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology, where he works with students from pre-K to 12th grade. He is well known for his work at the Miami Circle and the Lake Pithlachocco Canoe sites in Florida, where he served as State Archaeologist before moving to the Northeast. Ryan has been interested in archaeology since he was young—even before Indiana Jones hit the big screen in 1981!
