We find our next amazing console or dining table in scarred land from trees cut years ago. In order to make that land usable again, these stumps must be dug up. All remaining tree stumps are tagged by the authorities to allow for removal. Larger wood pieces we find as a result of land clearing by the Thai government. This is done to make room for new roads and public buildings.

WOOD SPECIES Chamcha Wood
Teak Wood
Chamcha is a fast-growing and exotic subspecies of Acacia that is prized for its richly figured grain and distinct sap line. It is characteristic for these trees to grow crooked and with low and heavy branching. This allows for some of the most interesting and organic forms seen in the world’s forests. It is this irregularity that defines the Origins Collection; where we look for those pieces that stand out and turn them into functional works of art.
Teak is the most durable and weather-proof of all hardwoods and is one of the world’s most valuable timbers. It has been historically recognized for its robustness and firmness, and has a beauty and richness that is unrivaled. Teak has an exceptionally pronounced grain that is best accented by a simple clear coat finish. The natural oils the wood produces allows it to be used outdoors year-round, where it develops a beautiful silver-grey patina.
Burl
Makha
Extraordinary in every way, from its highly-figured grain to the story of how it comes to be. Burl is nature’s most beautiful form of protection. When a tree experiences an unusual stress, the burl is its decadeslong response. A burl is the hardest part of a tree. Its rarest and most beautiful aspect. It is often used in veneers for fine furniture, luxury car interior trims or high-end instruments. We seek out the most unusual forms and slice them into solid, generous slabs.
Makha is a rare hardwood, highly prized for its outstanding finish. The wood is hard, heavy and dense and develops a beautiful patina as it ages. Makha is finely figured and typically reserved for use in fine musical instruments and luxury car interiors. The base of the Makha tree is especially valued due to the massive burls that grow in the root system.
Mango
Tamarind is a hardwood with a rich grain pattern and color. The sapwood, around the exterior, is a pale yellow while the heartwood is a dark purplish-brown. The center of the tree is usually hollow, giving our tables a very unique personality. The entire tree is utilized; the midsection of the trunks for firewood and branches for walking sticks.
Mango wood is a medium-density wood that comes in a variety of colors, ranging from light to dark brown, with some pieces even having a hint of pink. Mango wood is inherently sustainable, being one of the fastest-growing woods in the world. There is a high demand for mango fruit around the world and the trees only bear fruit for the first 10 to 15 years, requiring the trees to be harvested and replanted to meet the global demand for its fruit.
Lychee
Mai Theng
Lychee Wood is a hardy wood that is very heavy and dense with a deep reddish color. Originally found in Southern China, the popularity of the fruit these trees bear has resulted in it becoming a prevalent species across Southeast Asia and beyond. In creating this collection, great care was taken to unearth these root systems which were compacted with stone and dirt and remove the sediment so they could be sliced into sculptural furnishings
Mai Theng wood, also known as Balau, is a hardwood that is denser than teak and with the reddish coloring of mahogany. Its rich tropical oils allow it to work outdoors, just like teak. This prized wood requires more time in the kiln and stronger saw blades to cut, resulting in less widespread use than teak. By using raw slabs and roots from Mai Theng trees, we have solved the sourcing issues and bring this beautifully-figured wood to homes around the world.

FINISHES Natural
Perfect Brown
The natural beauty of the wood, enhanced by an understated and durable catalyzed, satin clearcoat. Each piece is deluxed before it leaves the facility through fine sanding, sealing, spraying and curing. Our natural finish is a celebration of the grain of the wood in its original form.
We struggled for years to find the right brown, and it was only during a recent, unfortunate fire in one of our kilns that we discovered the perfect brown. In an attempt to salvage a large dining slab, we scraped off the charred top layers to reveal the unharmed core. We sealed, stained and finished the piece and realized we created a stunning finish. We aptly call it “Perfect Brown.
Uber Gloss
Ebony
The word Uber is defined as a great example of something, and what could be more appropriate when describing this finish. By applying a multi-step, high-gloss finish, our Chamcha wood takes on a brilliance you simply have to see to believe.
This ebonized finish is achieved by charring the surface of the tables with a blowtorch, then sealing the piece with a multi-step finish. The satin clear coat is durable yet understated. The resulting charred effect gives these pieces a character of their own, and pairs beautifully with polished silver, brass or black nickel legs.
Espresso
Weather worn woods left out in the sun and rain for months at a time take on a wonderfully-aged patina. By cerusing the wood and applying a multi-step finish, we achieve a stone-like effect which preserves the rough texture and rich color of the wood.
Our espresso finish is achieved by using our proprietary dark stain. This special treatment brings out a depth to the wood grain without compromising the original luster. A satin clear coat pairs beautifully with the smooth surface of the wood, giving the piece a luxurious and organic feel.
Bleached
Burnt Edge
Our bleached finish is our longest and most involved process. It is achieved by using special solvents that cause the heavy oils deep within the wood to come to the surface and be wiped away. The piece must then be washed, solvents reapplied and then be exposed to the sun for weeks. This entire process is repeated as many as four times as needed.
When a tree is struck by lightning, the bark is charred to a matte black. Inspired by this sharp contrast of the blackened outer edge to the natural core of these roots, we recreated this effect with a blowtorch.

TABLE BASES A table base is not to be overlooked! At Phillips Collection, our intention is to utilize as much of the tree and root as possible to help clear the land to make it usable again. In our travels, we find various types of tree roots that we unearth, then cut, clean out, kiln dry, and are then able to repurpose as astonishing tables. Notice how it is the buried interwoven roots that make the most interesting surfaces after they are turned over. Sometimes the parts that don’t reveal themselves turn out to be the most beautiful.

SIDE TABLES
64 / phillipscollection.com
One-of-a-kind doesn’t stop with our dining tables, coffee tables or consoles. At Phillips we continue to offer what nature has made with our side tables, using trunks or slices of wood on metal legs in varying heights. Here we have beautiful freeform burl wood slices as side tables. Burl is highly prized because of its unique shape and ring patterns. It grows because the tree has experienced some sort of environmental stress or damage. Isn’t it incredible that such a stunning result can come from such a circumstance?

ROOT ART The roots we source are so incredible on their own that they need not simply be turned into functional furniture, but they can also stand alone as art. Mounted on bases, these one-of-a-kind natural roots are true sculptural statement pieces. The reticulated roots can be placed in a window or used as a room divider. As with our other Origins pieces, our sculptures are finished on both sides, giving you two options and no restrictions on where you place them. There is no wrong way to install these. SUPER BLEACH
76 / phillipscollection.com
Bleached teak wood sculptures capture the feeling of beach-worn drift wood. This finish is in fact our longest and most involved process, using special solvents to reach the heavy oils deep within the teak. The piece must then be washed, re-applied, and then be exposed to the sun for weeks. This process is repeated as many as four times as needed before a durable satin clear coat is put on to protect the piece, ensuring the color and sheen will last for years to come. You won’t need extra SPF or a conditioning hair mask to get a conversation piece that looks this good. ONLY FROM ORIGINS.
