The designer Emanuela Burgener signs her creations in the name of Margherita, her eldest daughter, to whom her jewels are dedicated. Her designs are strikingly modern and fashionable yet maintain the noble traditions of classical Italian jewelry with the exceptional and meticulous craftsmanship established by Margherita’s grandfather. In 1966, he founded the Valenza workshop in northern Italy, where the family continues to work exclusively. A passion and love for the lively colors of aquamarine and other colored precious gemstones, selected for their highest quality from all over the world, underlie Margherita Burgener’s creations.

Michele della Valle, born in Rome in 1947, began designing costume jewelry at the age of 16 before exploring with precious gemstones. In 1976, he worked for a year at Fürst Jewellers in Via Veneto, Rome, which was then the representative of Harry Winston. In 1978, della Valle opened his own workshop in Rome’s Plaza di Spagna and began traveling regularly to Asia in search of precious stones. This was the beginning of a collaboration with Bulgari on special orders, and his recognition as a new designer by a clientele of film stars and opera singers throughout Italy. In 1987, he moved to Geneva and developed a line of jewelry which now bears his name and reflects his bold creativity in design using a colorful palette of gemstones.

Only an artful designer can imitate the suppleness of fabric when creating a piece of jewelry. Michelle Ong is one of a rare few to achieve this capriciousness. She has transformed the bib necklace, a traditional style from the turn of the twentieth century, into a masterpiece of design and craftsmanship that simulates lace. In place of thread on this necklace, diamond and platinum sections are “woven” into a latticework pattern with the crossing highlighted by a diamond. Teardrop and cushion-shaped rose-cut pendant diamonds provide contrast to the design with each gemstone decreasing in size to the clasp. This subtle but clever arrangement draws the eye, demanding to be noticed. When worn, this necklace drapes around the neck and feels like the fabric it is imitating. When a woman such as Michelle Ong designs jewelry, she understands how a piece should be worn, how it should feel to the touch and, most importantly, that it should be delicate and light; otherwise, it will be uncomfortable to wear. Michelle Ong is based in Hong Kong. In 1985, she and her partner, Avi Nagar, started as importers and wholesalers of fine diamonds under the name of Dorera but the firm soon developed a renowned reputation for its custom designed jewelry. In 1999, the firm’s name became Carnet.

The Edwardian period officially began in 1901. Fashion of the period, although inspired by the French courts of the eighteenth century, is characterized by an ethereal lightness and elegance. Layers of luxurious lace and feathers decorated garments in soft pale colors. Edwardian jewelry was designed to complement this aesthetic and predominantly featured diamonds in order to look as light and delicate as possible, reflecting the femininity of the Edwardian lady. This was the first time jewelry was made to be worn at night, now illuminated by electricity rather than candles, thus creating a dazzling effect. Edwardian jewelry craftsmanship and design is intricate with pierced openwork set with diamonds in platinum, garlands as the primary motif, and further enhanced with bows and ribbons. This magnificent choker is an exceptional example of the period.

with the crossing highlighted by a diamond. When a woman such as Michelle Ong designs jewelry, she understands the medium in a different way than a man. She knows how a piece should be worn, how it should feel to the touch and, most importantly, that it should not be too heavy; otherwise, it will be uncomfortable to wear. This necklace fulfills all of the above. Michelle Ong works out of Hong Kong. In 1985, she and her partner, Avi Nagar, started as importers and wholesalers of fine diamonds under the name of Dorera but the firm soon developed a reputation for its custom designed jewelry. In 1999, the firm’s name became Carnet and it was at this time that their design focus became more western with piece made to an exacting standard.
Rolex The company Rolex was set up by M. H. Wilsdorf in London in 1905 in order to launch the new fashion of wristwatches in Britain. The trade name Rolex was devised as it was short and easy to pronounce in most languages. In 1919, Wilsdorf relocated the company to Geneva and in 1926 invented the waterproof “Oyster” model, made famous by Mercedes Gleitze who wore it when she swam the English Channel in record time. Rolex has won countless prizes for precision and records under hazardous conditions. Edmond Hillary wore a Rolex on his great Everest expedition and Jacques Piccard also wore one when he explored the depths of the ocean bed. Rolex, still located in Geneva, remains today one of the largest and most popular Swiss watch manufacturers.
Sterlé Pierre Sterlé was born in 1905 into a family of financiers. After his father’s death during World Ware I, he was placed under the guardianship of his uncle, a jeweler, who taught him the rudiments of the trade. In 1934, he established his own business on the rue Sainte-Anne in Paris, moving in 1945 to an upstairs location at 43, avenue de l’Opera. From 1934 to 1939, he created jewelry for other houses, such as Boucheron, Chaumet, Ostertag and Puiforcat. Although the ideas and concepts for all jewelry offered through his salon were Sterlé’s, he engaged the services of draughtsmen, such as Jacques Desnoues and, after 1960, Yves Poussielgues, to carry out the designs. The firm remained open until 1976 when Chaumet bought the stock and also hired Pierre Sterlé as a technical consultant.

AUTHORSHIP WARRANTY Phillips de Pury & Company warrants the authorship of property in this auction catalogue for a period of five years from date of sale by Phillips de Pury & Company, subject to the exclusions and limitations set forth below. (a) Phillips de Pury & Company gives this Authorship Warranty only to the original buyer of record (i.e., the registered successful bidder) of any lot. This Authorship Warranty does not extend to (i) subsequent owners of the property, including purchasers or recipients by way of gift from the original buyer, heirs, successors, beneficiaries and assigns; (ii) property created prior to 1870, unless the property is determined to be counterfeit (defined as a forgery made less than 50 years ago with an intent to deceive) and has a value at the date of the claim under this warranty which is materially less than the Purchase Price paid; (iii) property where the description in the catalogue states that there is a conflict of opinion on the authorship of the property; (iv) property where our attribution of authorship was on the date of sale consistent with the generally accepted opinions of specialists, scholars or other experts; or (v) property whose description or dating is proved inaccurate by means of scientific methods or tests not generally accepted for use at the time of the publication of the catalogue or which were at such time deemed unreasonably expensive or impractical to use. (b) In any claim for breach of the Authorship Warranty, Phillips de Pury & Company reserves the right, as a condition to rescinding any sale under this warranty, to require the buyer to provide to us at the buyer’s expense the written opinions of two recognized experts approved in advance by Phillips de Pury & Company. We shall not be bound by any expert report produced by the buyer and reserve the right to consult our own experts at our expense. If Phillips de Pury & Company agrees to rescind a sale under the Authorship Warranty, we shall refund to the buyer the reasonable costs charged by the experts commissioned by the buyer and approved in advance by us. (c) Subject to the exclusions set forth in subparagraph (a) above, the buyer may bring a claim for breach of the Authorship Warranty provided that (i) he or she has notified Phillips de Pury & Company in writing within three months of receiving any information which causes the buyer to question the authorship of the lot, specifying the auction in which the property was included, the lot number in the auction catalogue and the reasons why the authorship of the lot is being questioned and (ii) the buyer returns the lot to Phillips de Pury & Company in the same condition as at the time of its auction and is able to transfer good and marketable title in the lot free from any third party claim arising after the date of the auction. (d) The buyer understands and agrees that the exclusive remedy for any breach of the Authorship Warranty shall be rescission of the sale and refund of the original Purchase Price paid. This remedy shall constitute the sole remedy and recourse of the buyer against Phillips de Pury & Company, any of our affiliated companies and the seller and is in lieu of any other remedy available as a matter of law. This means that none of Phillips de Pury & Company, any of our affiliated companies or the seller shall be liable for loss or damage beyond the remedy expressly provided in this Authorship Warranty, whether such loss or damage is characterized as direct, indirect, special, incidental or consequential, or for the payment of interest on the original Purchase Price.
