In 2003, Enigma introduced and launched a fine jewellery collection and currently has international retail stores in Rome, Geneva and Porto Cervo. Enigma jewels are recognizable for their strong, individual designs inspired by Gianni Bulgari, its founder and owner. The jewelry designed during 1940 to 1950, also known as the ‘retro’ period, is recognizable by bold voluminous shapes and the heavy use of gold, in particular rose and yellow gold. The post WWII economic boom, the desire to revive prewar prosperity, along with the popularity of Hollywood glamour, inspired the use of precious stones, particularly diamonds and rubies and the use of sizable, colorful gemstones, such as citrine, set in expressive shapes of pleated, woven and knotted gold. Dress clips enhanced a dress’ square neckline, sculptural brooches adorned menswear inspired blazers, and bold bracelets and oversized cocktail rings further enhanced otherwise somber day wear.

It is not feasible for Phillips de Pury & Company to obtain such reports for all gemstones offered at auction. Prospective buyers should, therefore, bear in mind that colored gemstones offered for sale without a gemological report or a specific statement in the catalogue entry may have been treated to enhance color, transparency or clarity. Enhancement of colored gemstones may affect market value, and our pre-sale estimates reflect the assumption that any colored gemstone not described in the catalogue entry as natural may have been treated.
