PASSION PUNCH I’m a big fan of being “Bash”ful– just do it with zeal! I'll drink to that. I have been quiet lately or at least for me anyway. Hey, sorry guys, everyone knows that I am a pretty chatty gal, especially when promoting PhillyFIT’s Bash! Recently though my mouth has been on vacay ‘cause my brain’s on overdrive. I’ve had a contemplation revelation. I’ve been deep in thought about what I want to do with the next ten years of my life. For me, it all comes down to passion. This time around, any of this past year’s “butt-biters” are going to take a back seat and let my alter-ego drive a bit. Now, I just have to remember to harness the things that I used to be fiery about; before work, babies and yes, excuses, got the best of me.

I just celebrated year number forty-five and maybe that’s what kicked me into this introspective mode. Instead of a mid-life crisis, I’m opting for a mid-life pause. My thoughts are spinning with lots of probing questions, including-what blows my hair back these days? Has my list changed at all since I was in my twenties, thirties, or even my forties, back when I was lighting Philly on fire with the launch of this magazine? As PhillyFIT keeps on revving like a hot 1969 Chevelle SS, somewhere along the way, my

September/October I 215-396-0268 I www.phillyfitmagazine.com

own set of tires deflated a bit and my engine started clogging. Seriously, I know using a car analogy is corny, but it gives you an idea. Much like cars, I think people need restoration every now and again (no Jiffy Lube jokes please.) In all seriousness, I’ve been lacking that new car smell and buying the scented air freshener isn’t going to get it back. You can’t buy what I’m talkin’ about. I’ve taken the turns. I’ve weathered through some fender benders. However, now that fall’s here, I’m ready to get back on the road and all I can say is “I’m ready to get my kicks on Route 66 or rather, 95 South will do.” Seriously, I’m so revved up!

I feel passionate about my kids; that’s nothing new. In fact, I love them so much it hurts! I mean it, I am a puddle of melted “I can’t believe it’s not butter,” when my eyes land on any one of my kids, and that has never stopped being true. But what else? I feel passionate about making health and fitness connections in our region. I sort of see my role in this community as a Fitness Hub of sorts, maybe even a Director. Yep, I’m that crazy blonde that has the balls to try to pull it all together and give just about anything a try, if it means getting all of us like-minded folks together (i.e., the PhillyFIT BASH, PhillyFIT Winter Retreat or the Workout-a-thons.) I can recognize when specific needs are present in our community and I’m passionate about trying to fill those needs. I like to say that I’m quite “BASH”ful. Thankfully, I’ve had a nice seven-year-run with many successes. But, there’s more to this PhillyFIT chick than that, and I need to think about this some more, so that I can make these feelings actionable. I feel passionate about making certain that people, especially our young people, believe in their abilities and pursue their dreams. I feel passionate that as adults, we need to help guide our children through the maze of life by offering sound advice, but also by demonstrating (through our behavior and

Me and my playful little girl, Savannah.

actions) the virtues and principles that we’re committed to for the long haul. Hey, I can surely offer advice, but I don't have all the answers. I am making sure I “walk the walk,” and “talk the talk,” if you know what I mean. Perhaps my secret is that I’m willing to really listen to my kids (and to other young people) and to all of my colleagues, to try to understand their varying points of view. This is how I learn and grow – how I become a better person. I’ve probably learned this the hard way. * * * * The other day, my friend Sandy came to me with a true dilemma. “Jami, I’m fifty. I’m just not able to recover from workouts fast enough. Those days of a good, satisfying burn are over and I’m finding that pain management has taken over my life. I’m just hurting too much to get to the gym, only to hurt some more.”

My first gut instinct was to pair her with one of the best personal trainers around, so that she could evaluate what she was doing to cause the pain in the first place. Then suggest a lowimpact regimen that wouldn’t be too destructive to her achy muscles and bones. But, the body at fifty is complex and it’s not unusual to lose tone and bone, as Mother Nature goes at it. Sandy would also need a check-up by a physician - this was obvious. Lastly, I couldn’t help but wonder what was going on in her personal life. Had she lost her passion, her luster, her mojo? Was there still desire in her marriage? Was she feeling productive in other areas – work, motherhood, and community? Motivation is hard when you’re depressed or feeling powerless, another hard lesson I have learned. In what seemed like three seconds, I was recommending a personal trainer, a primary care provider and a life coach, with an acupuncturist thrown in for good measure. The funny thing is that it took little to no effort to name names and make connections to help Sandy chart a healthy course. That’s what I mean about how PhillyFIT serves as a hub. It makes me feel great to be able to be the match.com of the health and fitness world. I’m happy to do it. I get a lot of pleasure from it actually—if only acts of goodwill burned calories!

How did I get onto this passion rant anyway? Why am I worried about what is going on in our community or about what our youth is forced to learn and believe? Why are young people confusing passion for sex these days, and sex for love? Has it always been this way, and I am just old enough now to know it, and they aren’t yet? Is this just a philosophical query of our texting times? Is the information superhighway full of salacious exits? Sorry, I digress. Over the summer I read all kinds of books. I love writing, but to write well, I believe one must read too—from motivational success stories for entrepreneurs, to new fangled advice about good parenting. I learned a lot and there is now a little voice inside of me that just wants to blab about all that I’ve learned. Seriously, sometimes I feel like going up to complete strangers and saying, “You know, it’s really important to be

present – you know, in the moment. Hello, are you okay? Anyone home?” But something stops me ‘cause it’s not exactly the best elevator etiquette. While I find it interesting to peel away the layers of my passion onion, it’s even more fascinating to see what others are obsessive about. Sometimes I see parents at their kids’ sports games yakking on their cell phones and I think quietly, “Shouldn’t they be passionate about watching little Johnny’s first slam dunk?” When my son Darion is on the court, I KNOW he knows if I am watching, or not. I hear neighbors talking about how much they hate their jobs, or worse, the entire industry that they have worked in for twenty-nine years! Yikes, time is of the essence people, and no one can be happy working where there is no connection to your heart, or passion. Come on! Then there are those folks stuck in loveless marriages or relationships, yet they settle! There’s no passion, there’s no excitement, and no adventure. That’s the worst because it leads to a snuffing out of self-fires – you know, that get-upand-go feeling that is invigorating. Next thing you know, you’re on an antidepressant, or worse. I think lessons can be learned when people behave badly or make poor decisions. To me, what resonates are the gifts and blessings that I am lucky enough to have acquired along my life’s journey, and I am able to always dig deep and find real happiness in myself and my surroundings. I think this freedom within myself allows me to get passionate about new things. That is what I am interested in, what I might find in the next ten years that gets me shouting, “WOW!” * * * * So, back to the part of confusing what’s real and what’s not. I think it’s really interesting how people sometimes confuse sex for passion and also the reverse. If one has a passion for something, they’re not necessarily “sleeping” with it. Furthermore, passion is not always love. This is often evident in young folks. They’re full of passion, but not necessarily love. They find this out soon enough. Passion - it’s a funny word, don’t ya’ think? There’s perfume, a fruit, and a soap opera named after it. Then there’s the Passion of the Christ…geez. I actually remember dancing at Passions, a cool club I went to as a twenty-something. Well, you can’t get passion from some hottie in Hollywood, nor can you get it on a sticky dance floor full of strangers. And God knows that you can’t get it by downing passion fruit martinis. It comes from within, and sadly some people never find their true passion or calling. You just have to tap into your soul and grab it before it becomes a flash, a shoulda-coulda-woulda, a fleeting thought.

Writing can help us remember what our passions once were, or what direction they seem to be going. What’s going to be your focus for the next couple of years? It might be a good idea to start thinking about it, and manifesting it, now! First, writing can help you clarify your thoughts and how you feel about issues. Sometimes I have to write to understand how I feel. It’s extremely cathartic (even more so than

8 I PhillyFIT

those passion fruit martinis.) Sometimes, I email myself a message I’m dying to send to someone about what I think, and then vow to not send it for twenty-four hours. I give it a re-read, and surely enough, I am always thankful I didn’t send it yet, so I can reorganize my thoughts and say it fairly and properly, without all the emotion attached. I want my passion about the subject to shine through the pages, not my emotions, which sometimes are a bit raw.

Second, writing can help you realize the impact from the images and messages that bombard us on a daily basis. Often, we don't even know what messages we are starting to accept as true. Once we write them down, we can examine them. Do we want to believe that self-worth is based only on our appearance? I don't. I don’t care how much time you spend working on your muscles, let me take a look at your past to see what you have done (or not done) to feel good about yourself. Writing can help you challenge some of the subliminal messages that have been filling your eyes and keep you focused on what really matters to you. Third, writing is a way to help express your own beliefs to others. The pen can pave the way towards powerful change in the world. That’s truly why I write this Pub Page each issue. My passion is connecting people, and this magazine is just a vehicle to do so. So, where am I going with all of this?

I was hoping to encourage you to blog about your passions for about five to ten minutes each day. If you get stuck, use the sentence starters below. Perhaps you can focus on one starter until you've exhausted it and then move onto the next: * I believe... * I don't want to believe... * I dream that... * I love... * I hate... * I worry... * I know... * I can't understand... * I want to learn... * I am passionate about...

You can develop some of your own probing starters, but push yourself on these. Don't stop with the easy, first thoughts, force yourself to go deeper and outside your comfort zone. Remember, if you find that you love things that aren't in your life or want to learn things that you aren't doing, make a way to get them into your life! If your passions are not appropriate anymore, get rid of them before they hurt things in your life that you really DO care about.

Create your “Bucket List” right now. Write down what you believe you are capable of and if you find limitations popping up, examine where they are coming from (i.e., turn off your mother’s voice inside your mind.) Then, journal about messages others may have given to you that are holding you

back. Do you think that you always have to make everyone else happy? Or, are you spending too much time on your own happiness and not enough on those you should be worried about? This topic has been an ever-present theme of mine through the years. I’m constantly reminding myself that my happiness is what makes my family happy, and what I’ve found is that my idea of true happiness keeps changing as I change. Yet I would have never discovered that if I hadn’t started writing things down. My list at twenty years old was different at thirty, and different yet again at forty. I think as I age, my expectations of others wane, yet my expectations of myself get grander, and I like it. For example, I keep telling myself that my forty-something bod can be as healthy as my twenty-something bod, I just need to eat right and work harder at the gym. Funny thing is, I am starting to accept the excuses of others (i.e., “Sorry Jami, can’t power walk with you today, I have the kids” or “Sorry Jami, I just don’t have time.”) Whatever the excuse is, I just push on. I have learned not to abandon my passions just because they’re not shared or supported by others. And this, my friends, may be the most difficult life-lesson of them all. Even though my “Passion Punch” is sweet and refreshing, it may be the wrong flavor for some, and that’s okay. * * * * Now if you have discovered a passion or a view that you think is important to express, write about it. Maybe share your view with others. Journal about ways that you can help change your world for the better. Journal about the impact you want to have in your children's lives. The whole point of journaling is to make your passions actionable and by doing so, initiate positive change. Seriously, did you guys read that carefully? Sounds simple to drink your own “Passion Punch,” but so many of us opt not to do so each day. It’s so much easier to sit by the sidelines and be contented with ho-hum. Just remember, great people (doing great things) are rarely found on the sidelines. That’s why they call ‘em trailblazers. The trail is out in front, not on the sides. Stay focused and stay in control. Get a little closer to reaching your own personal goals, whether it’s those last ten pounds or some personal growth issues with which you may be struggling.

Passion is a crazy thing, if you identify it, harness it and let it energize you. Others may take notice and be attracted to you. I mean, is there anything sexier than someone with excitement or vigor for something? Hey, maybe passion, love and sex are more closely related than I had originally thought. Now, go, write on! Best,

letterstothepublisher

Jami/PhillyFIT, I want to thank you for everything you have done so far with your promoting and advertising us featured instructors for the 5th Workout-a-thon event. As one of them, it has given my career a big push in New Jersey! I just got asked to give an interview for a movie documentary about the USFL Philadelphia Stars Football Team that I cheered for in 1984. The movie is called “The Team that Time Forgot!” I wouldn’t have been asked to do the interview, if it wasn’t for you and your magazine. Thanks so much, Lisa Mele

Hey Jami, Just received an email about the new issue coming out and had to click on it! I have seen your picture and your articles, but today I clicked on the videos on the site. This is the first time I have seen you live; you are just as sincere from the inside as out! I got a big kick hearing your voice and watching your mannerisms. Being a woman 48-yearsyoung, I so enjoy you and your magazine. You are real and you let everyone see that (not an easy thing in the public eye.) Your beauty from within is a quality that you wear well. Thanks for a great magazine! Dawn Braun Dear Jami, I am currently a fashion design student at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia. Also, I write for my own blog. My motive is to stay fashionable, fit, and fabulous! I am very much into fitness, health, and fashion, as well as writing about it; which is why I love reading PhillyFit Magazine and it’s so important to our community! Thank you for providing such an informative and inspirational magazine. One of my favorite parts about the magazine is Philly's Fittest. I work out at Body Dynamics in Huntingdon Valley, PA. It is my favorite place to be in the whole world! Sincerely, Amber Callahan Well Jami, The new ad you had your artist redesign is certainly more successful

than ads we have used in the past in a few publications! I was contacted out of the blue on Monday evening by a church in Coatesville that saw the ad in PhillyFIT; not 45 minutes later, we had a verbal agreement for their new race next June! You are a genius. Ken Getchell SpectaSport LLC (U.S.A.)

Jami, I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for a WONDERFUL event (Workouta-thon) on Saturday afternoon/evening. As someone who is overweight and trying to get back into a fitness routine, I have to admit I was a bit anxious about attending. I had nothing to worry about! The instructors were all fabulous and kept us moving at the right pace. It was a great opportunity for me to try some new things and push myself beyond any fears/boundaries I may have set for myself. The next day I was quite sore but had a huge smile on my face because I feel I accomplished something with not only one of my best friends (who came from Burlington, NJ to support me), but with a talented group who lives health and fitness and shared their talents with everyone. I look forward to November and doing it all over again! Thanks so much!! Andrea Morton

Hey Girl, Wow! I just want to say it was a true pleasure seeing you and all of those wonderful Instructors and old friends at the 5th Workout-a-thon! I had such a great time! I'm so sore from all the varieties of workouts, great stuff! Keep up the good work, I Love it... thank you so much for including me as a featured instructor amongst such wonderful talent. What an honor! Tracey Hess

Key to 100+ Pound Weight Loss: Beating the “Fat Person” Mentality By Trish Sammer Johnston

Stein at 405 lbs in January 2010. In May 2011, at 245 lbs., proudly showing off his PhillyFIT T-shirt. “I couldn’t even fit into it when Jami first sent it to me!” he says.

When you hear about a guy who lost 124 pounds in one year you usually assume one thing: gastric bypass surgery. “That wasn’t for me,” says Joel Stein. “I knew I could go that route, but then I’d always have the mentality of a fat person.” On January 3, 2010, Joel weighed in at 405 pounds. One year later the scale read 281.

Stein, who is now down 160 pounds as of May 3, 2011, knew that eating right and exercising were going to be keys to his weight loss. But he also knew that if he didn’t deal with what was going on in his head, he had no chance of success.

HITTING BOTTOM Stein was in good shape before he had a bad car accident in 1993. Multiple injuries and surgeries left him completely incapacitated by 1997. “I became a food addict,” he says. “But I wasn’t willing to do anything – I was totally sedentary. I knew something was wrong but I didn’t understand what I was doing to myself.” “I could eat three cheese steaks back-to-back,” he admits. “I could eat an entire large pizza by myself.” Year after year his weight crept up. 12 I PhillyFIT

Two things brought the situation into sharp focus for Stein. First, he needed a knee replacement but the doctor said that he was too heavy to have the surgery. Second, he lost a brother to a heart attack. “That gave me a real sense of my mortality,” Stein says.

A LIFELINE APPEARS “Then in December 2009, my friend Corey offered to go to the gym with me. He said, ‘I will make a commitment to go to the gym three days a week with you. But if you don’t go even one time I won’t go anymore. He busted my chops, but in a good way. He knew I needed help and I didn’t feel threatened by him. Without him I don’t know what I would’ve done.” On January 3, 2010, Stein went to the gym. “I could only walk on the treadmill for about ten minutes at one-and-a-half miles per hour. But I kept going back because I didn’t want to disappoint my friend. Then, before I knew it, it was the end of January and in one month I’d dropped twelve pounds.

“It was so exciting,” Stein continues. “Weighing less than 400 pounds felt extravagant. By the end of the second month I’d lost another twenty-four pounds. So I formulated this fictitious idea in my head – I was going to lose one hundred pounds. I told a few close friends and they were very supportive. Maybe they

September/October I 215-396-0268 I www.phillyfit.com

didn’t believe me, but if that was the case they didn’t tell me that!” he laughs.

“I was getting motivated without even knowing it. I went to the gym even though I didn’t want to because I was starting to realize that the pain of being heavy and lethargic was worse than getting up and going to the gym. Soon my stamina started increasing. My clothes fit better. It was almost a surreal feeling. Something finally clicked,” he says.

Stein’s original gym buddy, Corey, eventually wasn’t able to accompany him to workout as often as before. “I couldn’t figure out how all these other people could go to the gym by themselves,” Stein says. “So I got other people involved in my fitness. The really funny thing was that after a few months I started inspiring my friends – people who only had fifteen-twenty pounds to lose and they did it. They said, ‘It’s you! You showed us that we can do it.” “Now I get up at 5:30 and I go to the gym before work. I love it,” he says. “I feel like a million dollars. It’s a miracle. But I don’t feel good if I don’t go. I was very lean in my twenties. But it’s even sweeter today. Now I know that this is the way I have to live my life.”

Stein mentions another important milestone. “Last summer I went to the pool for the first time in sixteen years. I was out in the sun with people. I was excited for summertime this year!

The sun felt good! We grilled chicken and veggies! The summer before I couldn’t walk a block. I was embarrassed and I had to be pushed in a wheelchair.” HIS PROGRAM Stein reports using light weights and doing high reps. He walks on the treadmill and increases his cardio about one minute every week. As far as diet, Stein drinks a lot of water and eats a lot of veggies, as well as, limited fruit. He cut out bread and pasta and now focuses on lean proteins, such as chicken, fish and egg whites. “I eat veggies all day long as snacks,” he reports.

Every Tuesday Stein goes out with friends and indulges in a treat. “I eat twenty-five chicken wings, a small order of fries and seltzer water,” he reports.

The most important component of his weight loss wasn’t physical, it was mental. “People are always asking me for weight-loss advice. I tell them that I had to remember that what I think and how I act are different things. I had to learn that I don’t have to do what I think. A Day, A Life, A Lesson Getting Serious about Gluteal Reconstruction

Where’s the Bootie?

By Charles Peeples

Vivian Camphor

I read the news today, oh boy! Most of a year will have elapsed by the time you’re reading this, and the headline I refer to will have faded, if you ever paid much attention at all. And despite its grim aspects, this item was, at least initially, offered almost with as much mirth as shock. The media’s seldom at a loss for sophomoric puns when it comes to certain features of human anatomy, especially one with so many cute names. And though the news was rather sad, I can’t say that I had to laugh. You don’t laugh at stuff like this.

Though the holes were rather small, they were enough. She was a young British woman, and she’d died in Lower Merion after having her buttocks augmented with injections administered by a transsexual character that even Gran Guignol would have found too grotesque for popular consumption. If we can derive any good from this ghoulish tale, let it be in bringing attention to the folly of a widespread practice which reflects the distorted priorities of our media-image-driven society. Our obsession with bootie is perfectly understandable, courtesy of Nature’s hard-wiring, and I’d include myself in the multitudes of men reduced to incoherence (I just had to look) by the

14 I PhillyFIT

gluteal proportions of a J-Lo. I’m not going to worry about the logic of this trigger-mechanism but it makes more sense to me than the obsession most other men seem to have with oversized mammaries; as those fixtures are comprised largely of fat tissue anyway, they can do little more on their own than shrink or sag, hence their enhancement’s just as understandable as revising a misshapen nose, jaw or teeth, otherwise immutable through personal effort.

The gluteals are different; they’re muscles, and they happen to be among the largest, most powerful muscles in the body. Anyone current in the field of strength and conditioning will add that in terms of functional movement they’re also among the most important, as they’re our primary engine -the epicenter- of our locomotion. And sadly, as an adult, unless you’re a highly-competitive athlete or a regular lifter (or genetically-gifted), your gluteals are likely weak and under-developed -especially if you work at a desk. In the case of most women –and you can quote me on this: “clinically-atrophied.” Ironic, considering all this focus on their appearance. While this deficiency comes largely out of ignorance and laziness, centuries of societal conditioning are responsible as well; like many things women simply weren’t supposed to have/do (like voting, driving, holding high public office and corporate positions, etc), having well-developed musculature has been taboo. In From Russia With Love, the 1958 Ian Fleming 007 epic, the otherwise flawless beauty’s derriere is described as “so hardened with exercise that it had lost the smooth downward feminine sweep and now, round at the back, and flat and hard at the sides, it jutted like a man’s.” That was then -the era of Marilyn Monroe and her doughiness (and men were men). But when Sir Mix-ALot released “Baby Got Back” two decades ago he touched on that primal impulse I alluded to earlier. With greater acceptance and awareness of advanced physical development in females,

September/October I 215-396-0268 I www.phillyfit.com

we now know that gluteal development like that of forty-four year-old figure and bodybuilding competitor Vivian Camphor represents a choice, rather than fate or luck.

One current strength and conditioning theory postulates that some of our joints aren’t Vivian Camphor really supposed to move as much as others: the knees and lower back, for instance, are meant to function more as stabilizers -limiting movement, while the ankles and hips are supposed to be more mobile. That’s one reason why all those crunches and twists are passe, and variations of planks (bridges) and other “core” work are de rigueur. Thus limited hip strength and mobility means lower back and knee problems. We see it all the time, from the soccer girls with torn ACLs to their chairbound daddies with lumbar issues. So the notion of stuffing some alien substance -dead weight to bootinto the caboose (or calf, or pecs, or anywhere) as a substitute for muscular development is beyond idiotic, other than for sleazy quasimedical practitioners who see gold in them thar hills, and if it takes a senseless (in the most literal sense) tragedy like the one in Lower Merion to highlight this insanity and get it right, so be it.

The key to working any muscle is to understand its principal function, and that of the gluteus maximus is hip extension, which essentially means moving your thigh backward (that- not knee flexion- is also the principal function of the hamstrings, so if you want to size up the personal trainer kid in your health club, ask him how best to train hamstrings- I’ll bet he sends you to a leg curl/knee flexion machine. You perform hip extension every time you step up, squat, lunge, ride a bike, swim, or even when you just walk. But to have any noticeable effect, you need to perform this movement with the high intensity-short duration effort key to muscle development. Form follows function. We function on our feet -lifting ourselves and other stuff (the harder the better), using our hip muscles. And there’s no such thing as “getting too big” -unless the object in question is covered with layers of lard. That’s another story.

So if you’re serious about building those twin engines, skip all the gimmicks, gadgets and soft-core on-the-mat-in-leotards stuff, and stick with the basic proven functional whole-body-movement variations on squats (including one-legged), lunges, deadlifts, kettlebellswings, plyometrics, etc. Rather than trying to go into detail in this limited space I’d recommend checking out YouTube where you can find countless video-clips demonstrating in live motion these and any other exercise that exists. And as Vivian demonstrates, knowing what the glutes actually do can allow you some challenging improvisation without gym equipment. No glutes, no glory! We’d love to turn you on…

Milk and Asthma By Sally Andersen

Milk allergies and lactose intolerance are two of the most common food concerns in America today. There are commercials for lactose-free cow’s milk alternatives and bakeries and restaurants boasting allergen-free menus. One thing that isn’t advertised, however, is the fact that many people have an allergy or intolerance for milk without knowing it. Dr. Frank Oski, chief of pediatrics at the John Hopkins School of Medicine, believes that fifty percent of all school children may be allergic to milk; many of them undiagnosed. Why are doctors convinced that milk allergies are more prevalent than realized? The answer may be asthma.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, one in fifteen Americans suffer from asthma and fifty percent of these cases are classified as allergy-induced asthma. While many allergens play a factor in allergic-asthma (i.e: pet dander, dust, mold), milk has the added negative side effect of increasing mucus.

When milk or any milk product is ingested it can cause negative reactions in several systems of the human body, including the respiratory system. Milk causes excess mucus production, something that asthma also does, which results in coughing, wheezing, chest congestion and the triggering of asthma. Many high-performing athletes have discovered this connection for themselves and are quick to tell others that cutting out dairy alleviated their asthma symptoms.

Gym owner, fitness professional and self-proclaimed vegan meathead, Matt Letten, had asthma his entire life. He was tired of taking medication to treat the symptoms and finally discovered how to address the cause when he switched to a vegan diet. “I learned that for many, dairy is actually a primary aggravator when it comes to allergies and asthma. When you look at the fact that humans are the only species on the planet who drink

16 I PhillyFIT

the milk of another species, it makes a whole lot of sense,” says Letten. “Cutting dairy out of my diet changed my life. My asthma symptoms were gone and my allergies were vastly improved.”

Hillary Biscay, the most prolific Iron-distance competitor on the professional women’s racing circuit, who was the first person ever to record six top-five Ironman finishes in one season, also made dietary changes to relieve her asthma.

“I have struggled to breathe while exercising for as long as I can remember,” says Biscay. “I was finally diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma and various allergies at age eleven and have used many different inhalers since then to treat these issues. One of the symptoms I always struggled with was phlegm in my lungs; I was always coughing and fighting this in an effort to get air. I thought this was just part of the deal with asthma and allergies. It wasn't until I cut dairy products out of my diet and these symptoms went away that I realized what was causing them.” “Now, when I indulge in frozen yogurt or something on occasion, it is amazing how quickly the crud reappears – before I am even done eating. The correlation has become so obvious that I am rarely even tempted by dairy products because I know what they do to me.”

Research findings support an unhealthy connection between milk and asthma as well. "In all respiratory conditions, mucusforming dairy foods, such as milk and cheese, can exacerbate clogging of the lungs and should be avoided," writes Professor Gary Null in the Complete Encyclopedia of Natural Healing. In “Vegan Diet Regimen with Reduced Medication in the Treatment of Bronchial Asthma,” a 1985 experiment detailed in the Journal of Asthma, twenty-five asthma patients were put on a strict vegan diet. Seventy-one percent showed improvement

September/October I 215-396-0268 I www.phillyfit.com

within four months; within one year ninety-two percent had improved lung functioning.

The connection is not new and it’s not a secret to doctors or scientists. However, for some reason the public continues to be pushed to buy and consume dairy while using inhalers and steroids to alleviate the symptoms of asthma.

Asthma sufferers should talk to their doctor before changing their medications, but avoiding dairy is a healthy and safe change that anyone can try on their own. Try replacing milk, ice cream and yogurt with similar products made from soy, coconut or rice. Replace cheese with the delicious allergen-free brand Daiya. Sally Andersen’s interest in dairy started when she was able to stop using inhalers and steroids to control her asthma by becoming vegan. She can be found celebrating her newfound lung functioning by leading fitness classes at Kendrick Recreation Center and Sweat Gym, and running with Team Vegan Philly.

What should your child be having for lunch at school? By Solomon Brenner

You could assume that your children are eating a well-balanced meal in the school cafeteria, or that they are enjoying that healthy lunch you packed for them this morning, but more likely than not they are making less than healthy food choices. These unhealthy decisions are one of that factors contributing to the increasing obesity problem that exists today.

Many parents feel they have a hard enough time trying to get their children to eat well at home, and assume they have no control over their eating situation at school. However, if you are aware of the options, you may be able to influence what they eat. At many schools, snack bars with a la carte programs that offer hamburgers and chips, and vending machines with soft drinks and junk food are competing with the healthy options offered by the school.

Is it really up to the school to provide healthy and complete lunches? If your child is one of the twenty-six million children each school day that feed on the "balanced diet,” or low-cost or free courses offered by the school lunch, you may think they are eating healthily. But according to a study done in the United States, the foods served in school lunch programs are high in saturated fat and cholesterol and way too low in any of the other vital nutrients that children need to grow and stay healthy. Eating the lunch provided by the school is probably a weaker option, because some children may totally ignore the cafeteria and go straight to a snack machine. These vending options could provide a meal consisting of a bag of Twinkies and a soft drink.

18 I PhillyFIT

Better yet, if you are not sure that your school is really offering nutritionally balanced food to your children, pack your own lunch for them. Mix it up to keep it interesting and healthy. Include leftovers from last night’s dinner, their favorite sandwich or yogurt and fresh fruit or vegetables, or another healthy snack. If your child has a lunch box that can be kept cold, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to include some milk or natural fruit juice.

Make sure to keep your child’s lunch safe from going bad or becoming contaminated. When packing a fresh lunch, it’s best to keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot in an insulated lunchbox or bag. To keep drinks cold or hot, use a thermos with your child’s favorite cartoon character on it.

If you are having trouble planning meals for your children, ask your kids for their contributions and let them help pack their own lunch. You can also use the food pyramid as a guide and a meal plan. It will help your children consume the necessary daily vitamin, mineral, and calorie intake requirements. Keep in mind that although the school lunches may be convenient, they usually are higher in fat, sugar and calories than you might be prepared for, and are also more expensive.

Veinwave™ uses a revolutionary process called “Unipolar Thermo-coagulation (UTC)”. A unique, high-frequency energy is applied to the affected area which causes the vein walls to collapse. It is very safe, effective, and permanent. Unlike lasers, the Veinwave™ involves only slight discomfort, so there is no need for anesthetic creams or pain medications. Also, the Veinwave™ doesn’t carry a risk of long-term scarring and is over in 15 minutes. Sclerotherapy provides successful treatment on the larger leg veins. However, sclerotherapy fails to be effective on the fine veins of the knee and ankle and is rarely used on the face. As a combination therapy, Veinwave™ is the perfect compliment to sclerotherapy.

HOOKED ON

TRX By Joan Woltemate

Just when you think you know everything there is to know about exercise something new and exciting comes along TRX or Total Resistance Exercise. What is it? TRX is a portable, easy-to-use piece of equipment consisting of two sturdy straps, invented by a US Navy Seal, which can attach almost anywhere. TRX uses your own body weight against gravity in order to provide an original and challenging, yet fun, workout. I was hooked after my first workout. I discovered immediately that I could safely perform hundreds of exercises to increase my strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility all while preventing injuries. I choose my own intensity just by moving my body. I love that. I was first introduced to the TRX by a friend and the very next day I bought one. I never do things like that. The first thing I noticed was how my core was fired up. I felt it in every cough the next day. I have a serious balance issue due to an old ankle injury. On the TRX, however, I discovered I was able to do single leg balance exercises that I could never do before. After taking a course from Fitness Anywhere, the people who helped develop TRX, I started adding it to my workouts once or twice a week.

I am a personal trainer in Jenkintown and I introduced the TRX to my valued clients. I would say ninety percent of them love it; my runners, my tennis players, my golfers, and not to mention, my vintage clients. The intensity is their own body weight; if they move closer to the TRX anchor point they get a more intense workout. We do tons of cardio, strength, mobility, and stretching on the TRX. The stretching is truly heavenly and amazing. The flexibility component is unbelievable because you are strengthening and stretching at the same time. I love doing combination moves like a squat to a row, or a rollout to skull crusher. The plank is my favorite exercise on the TRX. Just imagine having your feet suspended in the air while on your elbows – you just have to experience it. TRX is for the fifty-five-year-old person exercising for the first time, as well as, the young athlete. You control the intensity. All exercises can be modified or made more challenging to fit

22 I PhillyFIT

your workout. It’s a total core workout as wellas your abs are constantly engaged. Most things we do in life starts with our core: bending to pick up a pen, washing our car, playing basketball, or even competing in an Ironman. A strong and stable core is the key to a healthier life. We normally train in what is known as a saggital plane - moving forward and backward, such as a seated chest press or seated row. These exercises are great for building strength, but do not challenge the core. In everyday life we don’t move forward and back, we normally move left, right, diagonal, and reaching. TRX is a functional trainer. It trains our bodies the same way we move through life, which is important in order to prevent injuries. TRX takes the same ol’ exercises and adds a threedimensional aspect. The TRX trains our bodies for everyday activities as well as sport-specific movements.

You think you’ve got a handle on pushups? Now try an “atomic pushup” on the TRX. Your feet are suspended, forcing your inner and outer thighs and entire core to work like never before. Next, bring your knees into your chest right after the pushup for a total body exercise. Amazing! The TRX pushes you to an incredible level of performance that you could never imagine doing. One of my clients told me, “I have never felt like that after a workout.” Give this little piece of equipment a go I am certain you will love (and hate) it. Try a TRX class. Working out on the TRX with others in class-setting will not only challenge, but also surprise you. I find myself giving it more of an effort when I am in the company of others. I call it the “show off” factor. Try a TRX class and “show off” what you can do. I am certain you’ll be hooked. Joan Woltemate is a certified personal trainer at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Jenkintown – Certified in TRX, Power Plate, Prenatal Fitness, CPR and First Aid. She loves her family, coaching kids, running, boxing and hanging with her friends on the beach.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS? True Homegrown Love Stories Contributed by PhillyFIT readers.

Written by Sue Andiorio Eric Hoffman and Sue Andiorio have been a couple since 2008, and met at The Lab Fitness and Spa now called Cornerstone Fitness and Spa!

Shortly after graduating, I moved from Boston to good old Philly. As I unpacked I realized the only reason I was here was because my sister Allison had encouraged me to make the move. She was newlywed, a Philadelphia native and was excited for another familiar face. Still trying to figure out what I should do with my life as a personal trainer, I started a job a couple days after arriving and soon found out that Sue + city + small row home with newlyweds was not working out. The problem was that I had no idea where places were, nor did I know anyone. This was starting to look like a huge mistake. Having no idea of my surroundings I found a gym owned by a hospital in Warrington and I jumped on it. Now that I found a job I needed a home. Not knowing the area, I choose a little town called Perkasie. Although it was only a few miles, it was almost forty minutes away from work! Unfortunately I still did not know anyone other than Allison who was now almost two hours from me. I prayed for better luck.

On my first day of work I make it my mission to find a friend! I never thought wanting a friend would turn into something so much more! I meet Eric that first frantic day. He was also a recent college graduate and new trainer at the gym. I come to find out that not only does he live in Perkasie, but he resided five minutes away from me. What a small world! We spent most of my first day just talking and shooting the breeze. Needless to 24 I PhillyFIT

say we instantly hit it off! A few days later we set up our first date. With the romantic sounds of weights clacking, people huffing and puffing and treadmills buzzing, Eric attempted to be debonair by asking me out using a line that only I would appreciate. He said, "Do you want to take my truck or my car?" I was sold. Not knowing it was an actual date, I was extremely late and got ready as if my buddy had just come over for a wings and pizza. It turns out that was not the case here. We spent the evening laughing and carrying on as if we had known each other for years.

We both noticed that our friendly feelings were maybe something a bit more. Working at the gym made our relationship better. We constantly had something to talk about, whether it was how many clients we had, how much weight we lifted that day or how many carbs we ate at lunch, being at the gym together brought us closer. However, it wasn't until Allison's Christmas party a few weeks later that we actually made up our minds that we were in fact a couple. So after one month of living on my own, having a horrible stretch of bad luck, not knowing a soul, starting a brand new job and a brand new life, I ended up falling in love at the gym! We have been dating for a bit more than two years now. Although we no longer work together, we are better than ever. Eric took a job as a strength and conditioning coach at Swarthmore College and I have moved on to a career as a health fitness specialist at a corporate health company. The gym will always be special to us, not just because we are gym rats and love to lift, but because without the gym we never would have found each other. I mean come on, girl moves to Philly + boy looking for love + gym = picture perfect!!!

By: Daniel Aleksa I always knew I’d meet my sweetheart at a gym. Given the role fitness plays in my life, any other setting would have felt inappropriate. I’ve never considered myself a “bar guy”. I already graduated from college and my place of work was predominately men. The gym represented a place where people of like interest and belief can co-mingle - a community of its own with an unspoken system of values and way of life. It is the church to the religious. When you meet someone in a gym, you already know some fundamentals about that person – their core beliefs. Be them fitness maven or first-timer, you know at minimum, this person has gone through some process of self inspection and acted upon the resolution to improve; a rare and commendable quality indeed. All of these things you know, even before you know their name. Hero: “So I see you doing some pretty intense workouts in the aerobics room.” Sweetheart: “Yea, I love doing plyometrics in there.” Hero: “Well, it definitely garners attention, ha-ha” (nervous laugh) Sweetheart: Ha-ha (confident laugh) In my five plus years of fitness experience, I had never seen jumping so intense, hops so graceful and bouncing so bouncy. Beyond her incredible physique and gorgeous face, this was a girl of intense passion. You could sense it. Her physique alone was a symbol of motivation. Her body was not the end result of fortunate metabolism, but instead was a sculpted piece of work with every vestige of weights lifted and miles run. Her commitments to fitness extended well beyond her hour at the gym each day. This was confirmed when discovering she was interested in being a personal trainer; a title I myself had just recently acquired. Hero: “Well that’s great! If I can offer any help to you whatsoever getting certified, I’d be more than happy.” Sweetheart: “Alright thank you!” I’m thinking, “Uh oh, short responses are not good.” Now in retrospect, it could have been because she was not interested or perhaps because she was, at the current moment of that conversation, doing ‘lat’ pulldowns - in mid set. I was feeling bold that day. It was time to move in! I went to the front desk and on a small sheet of paper wrote my name, number, and a three word request for a date, “Dinner at six?” “You, me, movie?” No, none of the above. I chose instead: “Set plyo date.” As it turns out, plyometrics happens to be my least favorite form of exercise, however I planned to just disguise that fact. It would get me closer to her! Though there was little in the way of personal exchange during our ‘plyo date’, that’s not to say we didn’t get to know one another. She would demonstrate and I would follow. It seemed my intensity level was her only criteria for suitability. Family background, education his-

tory, and upbringing were all secondary interests to the unspoken inquiry: “How hard do you work?” Some days passed and we maintained very friendly terms exchanging pleasantries on every encounter. However, as I soon discovered, there were some who sought to disrupt that harmony. He was a co-worker of mine, an imperious young man with less than pure intentions who also expressed an interest in Sweetheart. I might have been bothered by that if I thought him a worthy adversary, but he wasn’t. With the little charm he possessed, he placed it towards suspicious ends. I only hoped that Sweetheart would detect that. Villain: With a sinister grin, “I bet you I can get her before you can.” Hero: “Get her?” Villain: “Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about. Watch this.” To my chagrin and dismay, I did watch him as he successfully convinced her to play a cozy game of racquetball. So now, here I am forced to sit idly by as Sweetheart is having a grand ol’ time with this jackass! As it turns out, racquetball wasn’t even being played but instead some perversion of baseball and soccer where he was having her pitch him the ball as to show off his drop kick returns. But that’s alright. I was going to play it cool. Jealousy can be stinky cologne. I grabbed for my phone and sent a text simply reading, “Having fun?” If she possessed the wit I suspected she did, she would understand I was making a joke about the ridiculousness of their ‘game’. She did. Text reply from Sweetheart: “Ha-ha, for one, why am I in here and for two, why couldn’t it at least be with you?” Text from Hero: “Well, let me make it up to you with lunch.” Text from Sweetheart: “Okay, :)” And the rest, my reading friends, is history. However the epilogue to this story is perhaps the most exciting. Beyond being together now for eight months and very much in love, there is something else that’s been created. Independent of our nascent relationship was the formation of my ideas for a personal training business. It was to be a unique mixture of physical fitness with personal development complete with a mission statement to “elevate you to your highest capacity of mind and body” and to instill the “knowledge, accountability and motivation to produce and sustain results on your own.” This was the verbal manifestation of my core beliefs. When I watched Sweetheart, I saw in her, a counterpart to that belief system. From her innate ability to motivate others to her demand of high wages from life, she was a living breathing embodiment to that which I sought to inspire in others. Truly, my perfect match. And so that continues to be our mission as her and I work together under our business name, “Motivators Personal Training.” We serve Bucks and Montgomery County delivering that which we are most passionate about each and every day.

Values matter. Core beliefs are what count. I know more happy couples who share differing tastes in say, movie genre, than differing value systems. The day I attend the wedding between John the butcher and Jane the animal activist, perhaps I’ll reconsider, but I won’t hold my breath. When you connect on core beliefs, everything else is details. I know, because I have thankfully connected at my core, and I have never been happier in my life. To Kathryn McDermott, my Sweetheart, Happy Valentine’s day, I love you! Your Hero, Daniel Aleksa

Piloxing

A Winning Workout Combination of Sleek, Sexy & Powerful Comes to Powerhouse Pilates in Doylestown By Annie Maxwell & Victoria Maxwell

Sleek, sexy and powerful. These are the three words used to describe Piloxing, the newest exercise craze. The brainchild of creator Viveca Jensen, Piloxing combines the disciplines of Pilates (the sleek), boxing (the powerful) and dance (the sexy). Combining these different exercise methods makes for an intense, high energy, interval based workout. Piloxing, a favorite of Hollywood stars such as Hillary Duff, Kirsten Dunst and Alexis Biedel, has been making its way into the media spotlight as it punches across the country.

A dancer, boxer, body builder and Pilates instructor, Viveca Jensen believes that femininity is about more than just looking good; it’s about feeling good. Jensen has designed Piloxing to be a demanding yet fun-filled workout that empowers women to feel good about their bodies. Jensen ends each of her classes with the phrase “sleek, sexy, and powerful!” Annie Maxwell, the co-owner/instructor of Powerhouse Pilates in Doylestown, PA, couldn’t agree more. “I can’t wait to share it with my clients” Maxwell says. “As the only Pilates studio in the area to offer Piloxing, we chose it because we want to offer our clients new ways to improve their fitness. Piloxing provides our clients with a winning combination of cardio, grace, power and most important, fun!”

26 I PhillyFIT

A Piloxing class features different intervals that include boxing punches and combinations, Pilates concepts that create a strong core by challenging the body’s ability to extend and stabilize, and dance moves that keep the class light-hearted. The boxing segments, or “blocks” as Jensen calls them, work the body at a high level of cardio activity, while the Pilates and dance “blocks” allow for aerobic recovery. The result is a highly challenging, interval workout that leaves you laughing and sure to schedule your next session.

Powerhouse Pilates’ Annie Maxwell and her partner, coowner/instructor Victoria Maxwell, read about Piloxing last year and were intrigued by the idea of a strong cardio workout that was built on the core principles of Pilates. It felt like the perfect compliment to a regular Pilates practice. At Powerhouse, the instructors encourage their clients to take the body that they have today and make THAT body as strong, supple and able as they can. “The interval training of Piloxing presents an exciting opportunity for our clients to feel good about themselves,” says Annie, a sinewy red-head. “Fit doesn’t have to be skinny; size doesn’t matter, as long as you feel strong,” adds Victoria, a curvy brunette. Studio owners Maxwell and Maxwell both came to Pilates as a second career. Annie Maxwell, a Bucks County native, worked in finance before having her two children. Victoria Maxwell lived in New York City where she was a Broadway and film producer for 25 years. Both discovered Pilates as a way to recover from and avoid injury. In their 40’s, these women are living proof that the core principles of Pilates can create able bodies at any age. Annie, a distance runner and ranked rock climber, found that Pilates furthered her success in both sports.

MIND OVER BODY:

Improve Your Game and Conquer Pain Dr. Steven M. Rosenberg

Many professional athletes rely on mental focalization to help gain concentration, ease nerves, defeat pressure and even pain, game after game. Whether stepping onto the court for recreational enjoyment or a professional tournament, every player is not only battling the opposing offense, but at times, himself. Self-consciousness, lack of motivation, a roaring crowd of spectators or even a jibbing competitor, an athlete is consistently faced with obstacles that hinder concentration. “Visualization is the key to performing well and enjoying what you are doing,” says Steven M. Rosenberg, Ph.D. “It is your mental rehearsal,” he adds. When visualizing the perfect swing, shot, or throw your muscles and nerves contract and react, even though your body remains still. Then, when it’s time for the real movement your muscles are trained and ready to perform. Dr. Rosenberg has helped thousands of people kick smoking as well as boost self-esteem and motivation. The 1994 Cambridge’s Man of the Year, Hypnosis Hall of Fame inductee and author of “I Hope the Hell I Win! Turning Hope into Reality...” is no stranger to

working with high-profile athletes either; Rosenberg served as the official psychotherapist for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Conquer Pain By mentally relaxing specific muscle groups, the athlete’s body becomes loose; the mind calms and is able to focus on the game rather than anxious nerves. Focalization can even defeat pain and discomfort. “For example, if experiencing back pain, focus warmth on that area – such as direct sunlight – to create better circulation. The imagined warmth will sooth, comfort, and relax the muscles,” advises Rosenberg.

The One-Minute Mental Tune Up A breathing technique encouraged by Rosenberg can be used prior to a big game or any everyday challenge. Take a deep breath through the nostrils and fill the lungs with air to capacity. Exhale through the mouth while slowly counting backwards from five to one. Repeat three times. Return to normal breathing and press your left thumb against the left index finger while visualizing the words, “Positively relaxed and in the moment. You’ve oxygenated your brain. You’re now calm, alert and able to really perform well,” says Rosenberg. Put these techniques to the test the next time you lace up, and watch for moments of visualization executed by the pros. Rosenberg received his PhD in Counseling Psychology from Southwest University in 1982. Two years later, Rosenberg became the first psychotherapist to be hired by a professional sports team, the Philadelphia Flyers. He has been featured in a number of local and national media outlets, including Best Life Magazine, Best of Philly 2010, GQ, PhillyFIT Magazine, Fox 29, and NBC 10, and CBS networks. Dr. Rosenberg has released a number of audiotapes ranging in subject from smoking to self-esteem which are available on his website, www.quititnow.com.

Skating for a Goal: Hockey Coaches vs. Cancer By Mary M. Nearpass

Hockey Coaches vs. Cancer is a group of people that have banded together to run tournaments in Anne “Nancy” Coyne’s memory. Her son, Tom Coyne, founded this unique charity two years ago. A former, amateur hockey player and the head hockey coach at Central Bucks High School South, Mr. Coyne wanted to honor his mother the best way he knew how- through his beloved sport of hockey. He is also the coach and director at The Rink at Warwick. Amazingly, this is what Coach Coyne does in his free time; he holds a professional job during the week at K & K Precision Enterprises.

Tom’s passion toward this cause was apparent when we first met. Nancy Coyne passed away three years ago of bone cancer. “I would have those ‘little boy’ moments where I would think of her and wonder what I could do to always remember her and let her know how much she meant to me even though she was gone,” Coyne said. “What better way to thank her for all the time she spent watching me play growing up in New Hampshire, than to host a tournament in her honor?”

Coach Coyne proceeded to meet with the people at the Philadelphia chapter of the American Cancer Society, and pitched his idea for "Hockey Coaches vs. Cancer.: Initially he was partnered with "Coaches vs. Cancer,” an already established drive in the metropolitan area, with college basketball coaches. They guided Tom in all the event planning and organization; however, he wanted to remain separate and branch off and follow his passion for hockey.

Hockey Coaches vs. Cancer is an annual, high school ice hockey tournament that began in September 2009, and raised 30 I PhillyFIT

$10,000 its first year. In 2010, the charity collected more than $18,000. For a nominal fee of $5.00/person, not only is it an exciting night out with the family, but ALL of the proceeds are donated directly to the American Cancer Society. Coach Coyne stated, “There is no greater feeling or reward than to hand them a check when the tournament is over.”

With unwavering support from all of the wonderful people at The Rink at Warwick including: Phil and Devra Pulley (owners), John Gallo (general manager), Jim Stampler (head referee), Ken Bruce (referee assigner), Lynette Taylor (Allseating), Fran Dunphy (head men's basketball coach at Temple University), Paul Bardell (head coach of the Lady Patriots), Darrel Dundore (Astro Printing), and John McGarvey (Xerox), Hockey Coaches Vs. Cancer will continue to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

This year’s tournament begins Thursday, September 8th, 2011 (AA) and Friday, September 9th, 2011 (A), and continues every week throughout the month. Games start at 6:55 p.m. All games will be held at The Rink at Warwick (1621 Mearns Rd., Warminster, PA 18974). If your high school team would like to become involved in this cause and/or if you would like to donate some of your time/talent, please contact them at (215)441-5004. The tournaments’ past high school champions are: 2009 Central Bucks South Varsity (AA) 2009 Upper Moreland Varsity (A) 2010 Central Bucks East Varsity (AA) 2010 Springford Varsity (A)

CHEW ON THIS:

Baseball Season Shines Much-Needed Spotlight on Oral Cancer By Dr. Aaron Ufberg, Ufberg Dental in Berwyn, Pa.

Baseball season is in full swing – a time many Philadelphians spend months preparing for as their red and white gear is stowed away for the winter months or in some cases proudly worn all year. This year, and as the stakes of winning become higher for the Phillies, I am hoping I will not see anyone take the field with a pinch of chewing tobacco in their lips. As a dentist and avid baseball fan, I find it ironic that the start of baseball season this past spring was timed perfectly with Oral Cancer Awareness Month.

Having been a dentist for more than ten years, I have recently noticed a dramatic increase in the number of people have who asked me about oral cancer and what can be done about it. Oral and throat cancer have made the headlines recently due to the number of celebrities who have been affected by the disease: Michael Douglas, Eddie Van Halen, Roger Ebert, and Bruce Paltrow, to name a few. Oral cancer unfortunately is affecting more people today than ever before, which is why education about the disease, its causes, and means of prevention is so critical. What is Oral Cancer? Oral cancer is the largest group of cancers that fall into the head and neck cancer category. Other names for oral cancer may

include mouth cancer, tongue cancer, tonsil cancer, and throat cancer. There has been a dramatic increase in the rate of occurrence of oral cancers in the past several years, and in 2007 there was a huge increase in those diagnosed, with more than 11 percent in that single year. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, over 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year, and it will cause more than 8,000 deaths – killing roughly one person per hour. Of those 37,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in five years – an alarming number that has not significantly improved in decades.

So what is causing the increased prevalence and diagnoses of oral cancer? There are two distinct pathways by which most people come to be diagnosed: 1. Tobacco and alcohol use, which is the cause that most people immediately think of and associate with the disease. 2. Exposure to the HPV-16 virus (human papilloma virus version 16). This is the same virus that is responsible for the vast majority of cervical cancers in women. Only recently has HPV16 become a huge concern due to the fact that this virus is transferred sexually and affects nearly seventy-five percent of sexually-active Americans

DENTAL GUIDE

HPV and Oral Cancer There are many types of human papilloma viruses – most of which are harmless and easy to treat. The transfer of some of these viruses is through human contact, and this is where the connection between oral cancer and HPV-16 lies. In the oral environment, HPV-16 manifests itself primarily in the back regions of the mouth, such as the base of the tongue, the back of the throat in the mouth, and the tonsils. There are two types of growths in the mouth that may occur from HPV-16: Condyloma and Dysplastic. Condyloma growths are non-malignant and wart-like, and can be treated easily when there is an occurrence. Dysplastic growths can be a precursor to a malignant change. According to Dr. Maura Gillison of Ohio State University, researchers studying the human papilloma virus say that in the United States, HPV causes 64 percent of oral-pharynx cancers and has now passed tobacco as the number one cause of oral and throat cancer.

Diagnosis and Treatment Although the statistics are staggering, oral cancer can be treated successfully if detected in its early stages. An annual oral cancer screening conducted by your Dentist is very important. However, if you notice any changes in your mouth that you are concerned about, you should always contact your doctor or dentist immediately. Be on the lookout for the following symptoms in yourself or a loved one: · A sore or lesion in the mouth that does not heal within two weeks. · A lump or thickening in the cheek. · A white or red patch on the gums, tongue, tonsil, or lining of the mouth. · A sore throat or a feeling that something is caught in the throat. · Difficulty chewing or swallowing. · Difficulty moving the jaw or tongue. · Numbness of the tongue or other area of the mouth. · Swelling of the jaw that causes dentures to fit poorly or become uncomfortable.

What to Expect From Your Dentist An intra-oral examination of the tissues in your mouth should be conducted by your dentist each year. The quick and painless procedure is nothing to fear, and consists of the dentist feeling your cheeks, the floor of your mouth and portions of the back of your throat with their fingers. A thorough oral screening also includes an indirect examination of the nasopharynx and larynx, and involves manually feeling the neck for swollen lymph nodes, and other abnormalities such as hardened masses. Your dentist will also look for white or red patches, ulcers, lumps or bumps, and review your dental x-rays. Your dentist may also use an adjunct detection method such as Vizilite™ that allows the operator to detect any suspicious areas more easily and at earlier stages. Vizilite™ is simply an oral rinse followed by a special light used by your dentist to detect any abnormalities. Normal healthy tissue will absorb the light, allowing abnormal tissue to appear a different color, making any irregularities easy to detect.

Be sure your dental check-ups incorporate oral cancer examinations. These regular examinations, as well as an increased public awareness of oral cancer’s risk factors, can reduce the death rate of this disease. Early detection and an annual screening, including detection methods like Vizilite™, are the most crucial factors in reducing cases of oral cancer. With an increase in awareness surrounding oral cancer, and perhaps an outcry from concerned fans like myself, perhaps we will eventually see sunflower seeds become the “chew” of choice for our boys in red and white, once and for all.

Dr. Aaron Ufberg maintains a comprehensive dental practice in Berwyn, Pennsylvania that focuses on Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry. Socializing Your Puppy by Debbie DeSantis, CPDT

When you get a new puppy, there are so many things to do: housebreaking, training, and dealing with all the normal puppy behaviors. In addition to all of the above, one of the most important things you can do is properly socialize your pup. Socialization is the process of appropriately introducing a dog to new situations and people and animals. Doing so will help you have a puppy who will behave in all situations and will help prevent unnecessary fears from developing.

Unsocialized or improperly socialized dogs are much more likely to have behavior problems. Because of past experiences, breed type, or genes, some dogs are more easily socialized than others. Socialization is especially important for young puppies—but it’s a lifetime endeavor for all dogs. The puppy should be safely on a leash when socializing it.

You should introduce the pup to new sights, sounds, and surfaces. Also, introduce the puppy to all types of new people. This means more than just exposing the puppy to your best friend or your neighbor. The pup has to be exposed in a positive manner to all types of normal experiences in order to have confidence and be able to deal with them later in life.

You want to ensure that each experience is a positive one. Make sure the people are gentle with the pup, and they can even give the pup a very small treat to make the experience a positive one. At first, it might be too overwhelming for the people to reach over the pup’s head and pet it. Instead, it may be better to have the pup go up to the people and have them gently give it a treat held at the level of its mouth. Meeting too large a group may, at first, also be too overwhelming for the dog. So have the pup meet smaller groups or individuals at first, working your way up to more people. Go at the pup’s pace.

Also, walk the pup on many new surfaces, such as carpet, tile, linoleum, and concrete. Take the pup where there are normal, everyday noises, such as those made by traffic, crowds of people at shopping centers, the vacuum, kitchen appliances, the television, radio, and music. Get the pup used to common objects and sights, such as people wearing hats or sunglasses, and umbrellas opening and closing at a safe distance away.

Some adult dogs who haven’t been exposed to these things as puppies may have great difficulty later in life adapting to them. However, if you rescue an adult dog, still socialize it at a level it can handle. If the dog is too frightened or shows behavioral problems with such situations,

please get professional help from a positive-reinforcement dog trainer specializing in behavior problems. Most rescued dogs won’t have such issues and can make great companions.

If at any time the puppy seems to be afraid of anything, go back a step to where the pup was successful. You may want to slowly distance yourself from the source of discomfort to a point where the pup wasn’t afraid. Don’t run away or tense up when you see the pup become afraid, or it will believe that something really is wrong. Keep your body language relaxed and tone of voice happy and upbeat, so that the pup will enjoy the socialization experience. Then, once the puppy’s desensitized at a further distance, you can move closer. This may take time.

Don’t pet the dog or otherwise try to comfort it when it is fearful, or it may believe that you are praising the fearful behavior. Instead, positively reinforce successes with verbal praise and even small pieces of treats. You want the pup to know that its calm, confident behavior towards new experiences is what you desire.

Some puppies will also experience certain times during their lives when something (a noise, an object, a being) that wasn’t previously frightening will suddenly become very scary. For example, all of a sudden, the car parked in the front of the house becomes terrifying to the pup. The puppy may have passed the car a hundred times before, and suddenly it becomes scary. If this occurs, just resocialize and act calm and happy, as you would initially during the socialization process. Then progress. In this case, if the pup suddenly doesn’t want to walk by the car and acts fearful, you may want to just slightly distance yourself to a point where the pup’s not fearfully triggered. Walk the pup by at this distance. Remain calm and upbeat. Then, gradually work up to where you can walk immediately past the car calmly and happily. Do not just drag the pup up to such a feared object or situation, or you may create a much bigger problem. Be patient and good results should follow. You also want to socialize the pup to other puppies and dogs. You must ensure that the other canines are friendly. Don’t risk bad experiences—which can stay with a dog for its entire

life. Try to avoid any areas where there are loose dogs. Your pup may be friendly, but not all dogs are. You can even make a “play-date” with friends who have friendly puppies or dogs who know how to properly play with puppies. A well-run puppy class can help once you pup has had the appropriate vaccinations, but it doesn’t take the place of the ongoing, daily socialization your pup needs.

Dogs who aren’t appropriately socialized can have problems throughout their lives in their adjustment to the real world. It’s best to start socializing the pup from the time you get it, after it has settled in with you for at least a few days. Always talk with your veterinarian about your puppy’s vaccination schedule and when you can go on the road. But remember that, before your pup has all its vaccinations, there are many places you can take your pup where other dogs haven’t been and still have it meet real-life situations. Make an effort to take the pup many places where it will experience everyday sights and sounds. Also, have friends over to meet the pup, so that it learns to accept people on its own territory. The time and effort you put in will pay off for the pup’s life. Good luck with your new canine family member.

Canine Stem Cell Therapy for Cisco By Willi K. E. Weichelt, VMD

Cisco, a 12 year old male Golden Retriever, had severe joint pain from degenerative joint disease after rupturing both anterior cruciate ligaments in his knees. His knee joints were operated on two different occasions within the last two years. Plates and screws were inserted to stabilize his knees. As time marched on, the osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease brought increasing levels of pain and discomfort in spite of anti-inflammatory medications and joint supplements. His other joints were also developing osteoarthritis. Cisco was unable to get up by himself and needed assistance to stand. He could only walk a short distance before lying down. He couldn’t use stairs and also preferred eating his meals while lying down. Cisco’s pain was unbearable to watch. So at the advice of his primary veterinarian, his loving owner decided to research adult stem cell regenerative therapy as a treatment modality to reduce pain and bring comfort to Cisco.

What are adult stem cells? Where do they come from? How do they work to heal? Adult stem cells are cells which are found in normal body tissues and organs including fat, called adipose tissue, bone marrow, blood, skin, and liver to name a few. As adult cells they have the ability to heal only their tissue of origin. However, these cells can be transformed into stem cells which have the ability to heal tissues other than their own kind. Fat is an excellent source of stem cells because it can be harvested in abundance and yields a much larger stem cell count when compared to bone marrow. The fat stem cells can have the ability to repair ligaments, tendons, cartilage and even other body tissues once injected into an injured or arthritic joint and also administered intravenously. Before stem cell therapy can begin, the patient must be thoroughly evaluated to determine his or her health status. Stem cell therapy should not be performed on patients suffering from cancer, active infections or neurologic disease.

The cat or dog under consideration for stem cell therapy must be pre-screened with these diagnostic procedures: · Complete Blood Count 42 I PhillyFIT

· · · · ·

Comprehensive Blood Chemistry Panel Urinalysis Chest Radiographs (X-Rays) Abdominal Ultrasound Cardiology Work-up if warranted

Fat cells are activated to become stem cells when they are processed with various proprietary medical reagents, enzymes, platelet rich plasma and exposed to 3 color LED light called photobiomodulation. MediVet’s patented LED Technology was used to treat Cisco. The entire procedure, from fat collection to stem cell administration, was done in-hospital the same day. Since the fat was autologous, meaning it came from the donor being treated, it essentially reduces any chance of an adverse tissue reaction.

Cisco’s stem cell procedure went smoothly. Within 10 days, Cisco was reported to be walking approximately three times farther than before the stem cell procedure. After another 10 days, Cisco’s owner ecstatically reported that he was walking around the house for longer durations and with greater stamina, going down stairs unassisted and eating his meals while standing. He still needs assistance to get up on his feet but Cisco’s rapid progress in less than one month is a hopeful sign that continued improvement is on the horizon. His rehabilitation also includes swimming in our heated therapy pool to increase muscle strength and improve joint range of motion. A graduate of Susquehanna University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Weichelt started the West Chester Veterinary Medical Center in 1966, the West Chester Animal Emergency Center in 1990 and the West Chester Veterinary Rehabilitation Specialty Center in 2006. He was President of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) in 1997, served as Chester County SPCA Board Member and CoChairman of “Forget Me Not,” has been a member of the West Goshen Lions Club since 1973. In 2010 Dr. Weichelt was awarded the PVMA's Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication to veterinary medicine.

SAVING AN

Endangered Species

Forerunners of kids’ fitness in the metro area, Kids On 12th, opened its doors five years ago in the Camac Center of the 12th Street Gym Complex in Center City Philadelphia. Today Kids On 12th helps children (and their parents) enjoy the benefits of quality kids’ fitness with activities ranging from swimming and trampoline fitness to arts and crafts.

Everyone wants more activities for their young children these days. It’s a good thing. Kids today know that being active and getting exercise is important for a healthy life. At a time when Americans are more obese than any other country and Philadelphia is one of the fattest cities in the America, it’s important to get young children into healthy habits of eating right and exercising. But does all this activity come with a price tag? Of course it does.

When we were children we would play outside with the neighborhood kids. We would meet on the corner with our bikes decked out with playing cards and round up the whole gang for a day of fun. We’d go to the local pools or hike through the woods if we happened to live outside the city. Unfortunately, kids today can’t be without adult supervision. That means we, as parents, need to pay for play, and pay we do. 46 I PhillyFIT

Activity facilities for kids are popping up all over Philadelphia. Kids On 12th was the first activity club in Philadelphia to provide multiple activities in one space, offering various events for kids of all ages. Now activity clubs can be found in many Philadelphia neighborhoods. Dance studios are doing gymnastics, art studios are providing gym class, karate schools are offering art and gymnastics classes are adding music lessons. They all have assorted camps and after school childcare too. These centers are expanding to bigger and better facilities with more space and equipment and featuring amenities such as oneway mirrors and parent cafés.

All these bells and whistles certainly look great, but do they make for quality childcare or the right kinds of activities for young children? Gross motor activity has always been a part of childcare, or so Pennsylvania State Licensing would have you believe. They require a designated space in every childcare facility for climbing, running, biking and jumping – for play. How much time is actually spent in play is a different question.

Besides health and fitness, play has countless social and emotional benefits. With parents or teachers always nearby, children never need to solve their own problems. They have consistently busy schedules and spend most of their days either at

September/October I 215-396-0268 I www.phillyfit.com

school or at camp, waiting anxiously to be informed of their next activity. They are uncomfortable with being allowed to have free time without knowing, “What comes next?” Kids don’t feel the need to be creative because the adult will direct the activity for them and they don’t learn social skills. Leadership, cooperation, self-confidence, empathy and friendship are all naturally learned through play.

When looking for childcare for either a preschooler or elementary school-aged child, a parent has many needs to consider. Is there convenience in their hours and location, flexibility of time and schedule changes? Is the facility clean and well maintained, not necessarily with expensive equipment? Are the staff and director people with similar values to your own? What are the safety rules and do the children understand the rules? What is the play to structure ratio? Does your child spend more time following directions rather than in free play?

Before opening Kids On 12th, I took my two boys to gym classes where they had to walk like cheetahs and slither like a snake, which was great until they had to leave before they had a chance to fly like an alligator! We’ve been to art classes where they had to draw a face with perfect dimensions, regardless of how they saw it. Even at the playground there were concerned mothers telling them to go down the slide, don’t climb up the monkey bars, don’t jump from the top and giving me sideways glances as if to say, “What kind of mother are you to let your children play like that?” This is why I opened Kids On 12th – a

place where kids can come to jump, play and learn every day.

Kids On 12th (kidson12th.com) offers the perfect balance of scheduled activities and free play time for children. It’s our philosophy that every segment of time (ranging from thirty minutes to an hour depending on the children’s ages) spent in structured activity should be immediately followed by an equal or greater amount of time spent in active free play. Using this as a model in all of our programs, ranging from ages two to twelve, Kids On 12th has repeatedly received high praise and support of parents who also understand the value of a place where children can be children while they have the imagination and the energy. I will continue my work to save the endangered

Trends in Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Plastic Surgery By Dr. Daniel Westawski, MD, FACS

Plastic surgery in America and around the world has become more popular, more available, safer, and has made significant advances over the past few decades. With the recent rise in reality TV and bringing plastic surgery right into your living room with a variety of shows, both reality and fiction, plastic surgery has become a household topic. Anyone watching can see the results on many popular stars, and can even watch the procedures on many different channels.

According to statistics from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there were almost 10 million cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in the United States in 2009, and that number only decreased slightly in 2010 with the down-turn changes in the economy. The most popular non-surgical procedures by number of patients in 2009 includes botulinum toxin injection for facial wrinkles (Botox and Dysport) at 2.5 million injections, hyaluronic acid fillers to fill in facial wrinkles and plump lips (Juviderm, Restylane and others) at 1.3 million injections, laser hair removal (1.3 million procedures), and finally microdermabrasion and chemical peels, each about 530,000 to 621,000 in that year.

The two top surgical procedures by far were breast augmentation and liposuction at about 300,000 procedures that year. Eyelid surgery, nose jobs, and tummy tucks were about half as much. Women outnumber men by far for cosmetic procedures done, but that has not changed overall. Men are getting liposuction, nose reshaping, and botulinum toxin injections to continue to compete in the job market as well as maintain their best look for decades longer than before.

Non-surgical procedures are very popular as they typically have less risks and less down-time than surgery. Injections and facial peels are commonly done in a short office visit at a person’s convenience. These minimally invasive techniques have a tremendous market around the world. The anti-wrinkle botulinum toxin injection Botox has a popular competitor in Dysport. More options in this market are promised soon. As an injection they are being used to reduce wrinkling of the forehead, elevate and shape the eyebrows, reduce headaches and muscle spasms, and even turn off embarrassing excessive perspiration. Their popularity and indications have expanded exponentially in the past decade.

Injectable collagen was the leader in products to fill lines and plump lips in the 1980s and beyond. But the newer generation of hyaluronic acid fillers like Juviderm, Prevelle, Perlane, and Restylane have taken off as the new leaders. They are longer lasting, do not require pre-testing for allergies, and are really useful in a diversity of cosmetic and medical needs. Their ease of use and safety have a great track record, and they are being used for a variety of problems that were fixed only by surgery previously. They have been injected many body parts to provide cushioning, plumping and shaping.

Body contouring is being done to help sculpt and shape people with better definition than before. Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction was designed with new technology to be less painful, with a faster recovery, and less bruising than traditional liposuction used through the 1980s and 1990s. Smaller volume liposuction is being done for more definition, even on people of average or less than average size. Vaser ultrasonic liposuction is one of the newest types, touting a higher safety profile that can sculpt and define your contours, even under local anesthesia. If you need to show off your six-pack or remove a little fat from the arms, Vaser liposuction can sculpt small areas in just a few hours under local anesthesia. Muffin tops, love handles, and bra-strap fat are now endangered species. Breast augmentation surgery has also gone through significant changes and con-

48 I PhillyFIT

tinues to improve. The implants that caused concern in the 1970s are no longer manufactured, and the saline implants available through the 1980s have proven to be safe and stable. The latest generation of implants are a silicone cohesive gel that are soft and more consistent with the feel of natural breast tissue. These implants now offer a variety of shapes and sizes that were completely unavailable previously. This allows your board certified plastic surgeon to tailor your look as more customized to the ideal you. There are now more saline implant varieties available with newer technology better at decreasing rippling and folds that were seen previously. New surgical techniques allow for smaller incisions than even a few years ago. More options exist as to where to place the incisions and are more easily hidden. The results of these newer techniques of breast augmentation are beautifully impressive. Body contouring has also made some impressive gains over the past few decades. Previously, procedures such as tummy tucks and breast lifts were done with just excision of the extra tissue with good overall improvement. These shaping procedures have gained a lot through a new paradigm of three-dimensional sculpting. Skin and fat are no longer just excised and discarded, but rather the overall shape is sculpted to an ideal form. Fat is removed through excision or liposuction in some areas and added via fat grafting to others. Skin similarly can be used to “volumize” regions if needed for augmentation.

The gastric bypass and massive weight loss patients have pushed the envelope of body sculpting techniques. Rather than just a tummy tuck that may have been done in the past, to contour the abdomen, newer techniques look at the overall shape of the trunk. The options available for body contouring of the trunk go from minimally invasive techniques such as liposuction and endoscopic tummy tucks done through small incisions, to circumferential abdomen and back contouring used in one surgical procedure. Techniques such as “reverse abdominoplasty” are now being done where skin and fat were removed from the top of the abdomen through hidden incisions under the breasts. This is a great technique for patients who have the majority of the redundancy above the bellybutton, and may have had previous traditional tummy tuck years ago. The “mons lift” is a lift of just the area below where a c-section scar would be on the very lowest part of the abdomen. For contouring a region that is tough to get through diet and exercise, it works magnificently.

The future of plastic surgery continues to improve with each passing year. The American Society Plastic Surgeons as well as The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons have been in a leadership role for developing a culture of patient safety and evidence-based surgical technique and outcomes. As new products and tools are developed, they are tested through scientifically proven research techniques for efficacy and safety. Many people claim they can do plastic surgery, but there are many reasons why you should see a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

There have never been more options or better safety for cosmetic surgery than in the new millennium. The techniques and tools to achieve our personal goals and sculpt our own personal ultimate work of art have never been better. I hope to have given you reasons to consider seeing a board certified plastic surgeon to help you look and feel your best - for life. The author, Dr. Daniel Westawski, MD, FACS is a plastic and aesthetic surgeon, certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Shear Smarts Featured Merchant

Talent Plus Talent Equals By G. Ataman

Jay Michael has over three decades of hair styling experience and is owner of two successful salons, both which bear his name; the legendary flagship location in Ardmore’s Suburban Square and another in the Radnor Hotel. Sarah Keating, a University of Pennsylvania-educated environmental lawyer, is a successful businesswoman and owner of Center City’s Phoenix Salon & Spa; a five-star, “Best of Philly” destination for those in-theknow.

Both Jay and Sarah are very talented individuals in their respective fields. Jay is a style guru and Sarah is a savvy entrepreneur. One day this past January, Jay and Sarah both realized that what each was lacking in their salons is what the other had to offer. Jay could provide the Phoenix Salon & Spa with managerial talent accompanied by a long history in hair artistry. Sarah could provide the Jay Michael brand with her business expertise and enviable network. Hence, a new partnership was born. The Phoenix Salon & Spa will now be known as Jay Michael Salon and Spa – Philadelphia. All three salon locations will share the tagline “Live a Beautiful Life.” This tagline will embody everything that the Jay Michael brand stands for – gorgeous hair styling, coloring and designing, along with luxurious spa treatments such as skin-clearing facials and rejuvenating massages.

A cause dear to Sarah’s heart is City of Hope, a national organization with a regional presence and renowned for providing cancer patients with compassionate care, innovative science and translational research, which rapidly turns laboratory breakthroughs into promising new therapies. Her husband suffered from NonHodgkin’s lymphoma and experienced first hand how remarkable this charity is, allowing him the opportunity to seek alternative treatment for his diagnosis. Another supported cause is Project H.O.M.E., whose mission is to eradicate the cycle of homelessness in and around Philadelphia by providing the homeless with a continuum of care that includes housing, education and medical care. Most recently, Sarah held Women Empowering Women, A Night of Fashion and Compassion, which raised nearly $100,000 for the charity. Jay Michael Salon and Spas will educate staff and clients about various ways they can be a part of special charitable events. Philanthropy is a very rare trait for an upscale collection of salons to possess and this most definitely sets the Jay Michael brand apart from the rest.

Sarah will infuse the Jay Michael brand with her inspiring charitable spirit. Her original vision for the Phoenix Salon & Spa was to be “A Salon with A Cause.” Her vision will now be supported and carried out at all Jay Michael Salon and Spas. Together, all salon locations will strive to give back by benefitting important causes and charities. They will be ambassadors of goodwill.

Many may wonder why Jay Michael would want to take on another salon in a seemingly down economy, and why he’d consider partners at this stage of his career. All three salons are doing really well despite the economy, and both have longterm loyal clients that visit not just for a great haircut, but also for a great experience. “This was a rare and wonderful opportunity to partner with Sarah, a woman I have known and respected for years, and to extend the Jay Michael brand into Center City. At a time when many businesses are exiting Philadelphia, Sarah and I are particularly proud that we are, in essence, investing in the city,” says Jay. “I approached Jay a while ago to chat about the beauty business in general,” adds Sarah. “The more we spoke, the more apparent it became that we shared many of

the same philosophies about what makes a salon and spa special – an understanding that every client is unique and that it’s about more than just providing a great cut, color facial or massage. It’s about providing an upscale experience; it’s about the ambiance; it’s about promoting a culture of happiness among both your employees and your new and long-term clients.”

From the moment a client walks into the salon, they are greeted with a sincere smile and a lemon-garnished glass of ice water or warm tea. There is a unique relationship that exists between clients and their hair salon, a level of intimacy and comfort. While other salons may decide to close their doors, Jay and Sarah have decided to open their doors to a new partnership which will combine their respective talents and create a beauty powerhouse. Yes, a down-economy is upon us, however with proper management and skill it is possible to be profitable during these difficult times and maintain the same level of high-quality service patrons have become accustomed to. These specialized services are the reason most of Philadelphia’s elite flock to one of the three locations – from chic “ladies who lunch” to news personalities and Main Line movers and shakers.

Revamping an existing brand is a lot to take on too, but that doesn’t scare Jay. In addition to the fabulous lines that his salons currently stock they will now have Jay’s very own signature creations. When it comes to creating an expertly-formulated product line Jay Michael Salon and Spa is dedicated to offering their clients the very best styling formulas. His new line will include long lasting hairsprays, silky serums and gels, all of the highest quality with reasonable price tags. The timing to launch these “get-glam goodies” seems ripe with the birth of the new partnership.

PHANATIC ABOUT DANCE Philadelphia Teacher is a

Center: Phillies Phanatic w/ Kim Forlini, Director of Springton Dance Academy

Kim Forlini, Director of Springton Dance Academy (SDA), has been teaching dance for over 25 years. In 1992 Kim met the Phillie Phanatic while working as a professional dance teacher at the Pennsylvania Ballet School. Not exactly sure what the job entailed, Forlini decided to help the green guy out. "He was a natural at picking up movements; he impressed us with his eagerness to please, his prestigious belly rolls and his hip thrusts.” As the Phillies mascot he had to learn a large repertoire, from Swan Lake pas de deux to his hilarious Lady Gaga spoofs, in order to entice his fans." “People of all ages love his comedic genius and style," laughed Forlini. Kim's dance studio was recently named "Best of Main Line"

You can also see our dancers perform annually at the Fourth of July Phillies game; igniting the field with flashy dance moves featuring ballet, jazz, gymnastics, zumba and hiphop. This year the studio will be offering new drama/theater classes at our brand new, state-of-the- art entertainment center in Ridley Creek Plaza, Newtown Square, Pa (next to Jumpers Birthday Parties). We are so excited to pass on our traditions to other talented dancers. Who knows, they may have what it takes to be the next Phillie Phanatic! If you are one of the millions of Americans who suffer from lower back or neck pain, you know how debilitating it can be. Burning, shooting nerve pains and muscles in constant spasm make even the simplest movement an ordeal. Often, just finding a comfortable position is virtually impossible. Traditional treatment starts with medication and bed rest and ends with the prospect of surgery – a painful, expensive, frightening experience. Treatments such as acupuncture, epidural injections, hot/cold therapy, massage and other "therapeutic" techniques may offer limited relief. Considerable research has produced a relatively new therapy that is highly effective in treating intervertebral disc problems. This treatment, known as Decompression Therapy, has opened the floodgates of new patients to Tri County Pain Management and Precision Pain Management Centers. Decompression Therapy is a traction-based procedure that can relieve pain associated with disc herniation, degenerative discs, posterior facet and compression-related syndromes. It also enhances the healing process and renders quick, effective and amazing pain relief that enables most patients to return to a more active lifestyle! It is an FDA-cleared procedure, and most insurances cover traction therapy. Decompression occurs as a result of an improved understanding of how to reliably cause the spine to "unload." The vertebral separation causes a vacuum or a centripetal force in the disc, which results in a "phasic change in pressure." This "vacuum effect" helps in the retraction (pulling in) of the extruded disc material.

When the disc retracts it can stop putting pressure on the spinal nerve or spinal cord. Thus the term "Decompression." Once the nerve is decompressed, a significant amount of patients will notice a decrease in arm/leg pain. Someone who has previously not found relief through other treatments is a perfect candidate for this treatment. Decompression Therapy may also be useful in determining the overall prognosis of passive care and expediting the phase-in of rehab protocols. Clinical findings suggest Decompression will create a relatively quick initial response. Patients who do well tend to feel a sense of relief (which can be direct pain cessation or a centralization of pain and/or reduction to an ache or stiffness) within six sessions. Full relief, if attainable through this passive treatment, can be in as soon as a few weeks. (Occasionally a "stubborn" pain syndrome may continue to improve slowly over 15 sessions, though this is not the norm.) Often, patients will be treated in 4-6 sessions and notice enough relief to allow active rehab to begin. Their Decompression may continue (pre- or post-rehab depending on the methods chosen) for 4-6 further sessions before discontinuing or reducing the frequency. Typical frequency is 3-5 times per week. The extent and seriousness of the symptoms will determine if more than 3 sessions per week should be used. Treatments only take about 25-30 minutes, and again, most insurance companies cover them. For more information on how you can benefit from the Dynamic Traction System (DTS), call Tri County Pain Management Center 215-957-5400 or the Precision Pain Management Center at 215-657-9393.
