Toomey Joins Nat’l Guard Caucus US Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) announced he has proudly joined the Senate National Guard Caucus, joining his Senate colleagues in advancing the needs of our country’s National Guard men and women. In Pennsylvania specifically, the National Guard has a strong presence. The Pennsylvania National Guard’s 19,000 Air and Army Guard members have had more than 25,000 individual deployments since Sep. 11, making it one of the largest and most-deployed Guard forces in the nation. The Pennsylvania National Guard currently has more than 600 soldiers and airmen serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and supporting NATO operations in Libya, as well as many other locations around the world. “We appreciate Sen. Toomey’s interest in joining the National Guard Caucus of the US Senate,” said Maj.
Gen. Wesley Craig, commander of the Pennsylvania National Guard. “The Senator’s support is invaluable and recognizes the fact the National Guard is the most cost-effective entity of the Dept. of Defense. Our Pennsylvania National Guard is one of the largest and mostdeployed Guard forces in the nation, and it is wonderful when our elected officials recognize the importance of our mission, as well as the soldiers and airmen who perform that mission.” “I am extremely proud to join the National Guard Caucus in the US Senate,” Toomey said. “The courageous men and women who serve in the National Guard deserve our admiration and our respect. As a caucus member, I will work hard on their behalf and welcome having the opportunity to do so.”

$5.6 Million In Federal Loans, Holt Logistics Donates $15,000 For July 4 Fireworks Holt Logistics Corp on Friday announced the payoff of Holt Logistics initially borrowed $3.6 million through $5.6 million in federal loans dating to 1984 that were the UDAG program in 1984 and borrowed $2 million used to help build the Gloucester Marine Terminal. more later that year. In addition, Holt Logistics Corp announced a $15,000 donation to Gloucester City to again sponsor that community’s July 4 fireworks show. This is the second year Holt and Gloucester City are cooperating in assisting in this community service. The fireworks will be held on Jul. 3 at dusk at Gloucester City HS.
HUD granted funds to a community that qualified for them, with the community loaning the money at commercial rates to developers. In the course of the loan’s life, Gloucester City worked cooperatively with the Holt Family, the developer of the Gloucester Marine Terminal, many times – through periods of growth, as well as difficult economic times.

The Gloucester Marine Terminal has the largest refrigerated capacity of any marine terminal in the United States. It is 123 acres in size, has four deep water berths and 12 dry/heated warehouses with more than 1,000,000 square feet of space and 13 reefer/frozen warehouses with 15 million cubic feet of space.

Youngblood Pushes Property-Tax Funding Although Pennsylvania residents have seen more than $2 billion in property-tax relief from casino gaming, State Rep. Rosita C. Youngblood said additional funding that would be used to reduce property taxes could be hindered if the General Assembly fails to act immediately to accelerate repayment of loans taken out of the Property Tax Relief Reserve Fund. Youngblood said the loans, totaling nearly $64 million, were issued to help fund the initial costs of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board when slot machine gaming first came to Pennsylvania. She added the General Assembly’s intent, when issuing the loans, was to require the industry to repay the loans, and require the Board to devise a repayment plan once a sufficient number of casinos were operational and generating slot-machine revenue.
to our economy, including billions of dollars for property tax relief for residents all across the Commonwealth,” Youngblood said. “But we are missing out on a large chunk of money that could be generating even more relief for property-tax owners. We need to get these loans repaid as soon as possible.” Last session, the Legislature amended the State’s Fiscal Code to require the Gaming Control Board to establish and approve a repayment plan no later than Jun. 30, 2011. However, the law also stipulated this repayment plan would not take effect until at least 11 licensed facilities were operational. Since Pennsylvania currently has only 10 operating slot-machine facilities, Youngblood said there is some concern about the financial risk of waiting until the 11th facility comes online before requiring loan repayment.

Opera Co.’s Phaedra Closes Season With A New Greek Mythological Romance Henze, the opera’s composer, has had a career featuring considerably varied output. His influences have ranged from atonality to jazz to Arabic music to Japanese novels to traditional German composition. Quite upfront about his homosexuality (he left Germany for what he saw as Italy’s greater tolerance) and his avowal of Marxism, Henze, a member of Italy’s Communist Party, has produced compositions honoring Ho Chi Minh and Che Guevara.
by Adam Taxin The Opera Co. of Philadelphia closes its 2010-11 season with a five-performance American premiere of Phaedra, a 2007 opera by the currently 84-year-old Germanborn, Italy-dwelling composer Hans Werner Henze. Sung in German, the hour-and-a-half opera will be performed at the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater on Wednesday, Jun. 8 (7:30 p.m.), Friday, Jun. 10 (8 p.m.) and Sunday, Jun. 12 (2:30 p.m.). In the Greek myth on which the opera is based, the title character is the wife of Theseus, the Athenian king who vanquished the dreaded Minotaur. The main source of the opera’s drama is Phaedra’s development of an obsessive, unrequited and forbidden love for her stepson Hippolytus. This inserts her into a tragic battle for his affections between feuding goddesses Aphrodite and Artemis. The Opera Co. of Philadelphia’s
