Brown Heads To D.C. For Congressional Meet Republican Mayoral candidate Karen Brown spent some of this week in Washington, D.C., meeting with Republican congressmen and others concerned with the crisis affecting the education of children in this city’s schools. The scheduling was set up with the help of National Republican Committee Member Renee Amoore. A former teacher, Brown said her trip was motivated by the fact “We are graduating students with a 2nd- to 5th-grade reading level. Drug dealers look for those to hire them to push drugs. They have no other career.” Brown said, “I will be talking to those who have had to fight similar crises in their districts. On my agenda will be how to reshape the teachers’ union to reward those teachers who do well and not continue to fight to keep those teachers who are obviously over their heads.”
Slot Revenue Keeps Climbing Slots revenue in Pennsylvania continued to grow last year, despite the advent of table games. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released slots revenue for June on Tuesday, showing that in the year since table games opened in casinos across the state, slots revenue increased by 8.4%. Casinos took in $2.3 billion from slots for the year, with nearly $798 million going to the State in taxes.
Pa. Schools Top Highest Tuition List Penn State University and the University of Pittsburgh have the nation’s highest in-state tuition rates among four-year public schools, according to a new list from the US Dept. of Education. Penn State’s in-state tuition rate of $14,416 at its University Park campus was the highest in the country for the 2009-10 school year. Pittsburgh ranked second 13 JUNE, 2011
at $14,154 for its Pittsburgh campus. Both schools were well above the national average of $6,397, according to the College Affordability and Transparency List.
Brady: NLRB Proposal For Workplace Elections Will Be Fairer In a letter to Wilma Liebman, Chair of the National Labor Relations Board, Congressman Bob Brady (DPa.) expressed his support of a proposed NLRB rule to streamline the workplace-elections process. “Hardworking Americans are having a tough enough time already making ends meet without being scared of losing their jobs if they want to organize with others in order to support their families,” the Congressman stressed. “Hopefully, your agency will be able to put these rules into effect because there are too many unfortunate examples of American people being deprived of their livelihoods everyday for exercising legal rights afforded to them in the workplace to support themselves and their families.” Brady said he applauded the agency for coming up with some “practical and common-sense rules” to ensure the administration of workplace elections and ensure a fairer process for all parties and he called the NLRB action a step in the right direction.

Well, State Sen. Anthony Williams (D-W. is asking constituents from across the state to submit ideas for new laws. Some of the nation’s most-significant legislation, like Megan’s Law, has come from the ideas of constituents, said Williams, who serves as minority whip. At least one winner will be selected and the Senator will introduce the winning idea next spring as a proposed new law. Contest winners will join Williams for a visit to the State Capitol and may have the opportunity to testify on behalf of their bill at a formal Senate hearing. The competition borrows its name from a cartoon by Al Fagaly and Harry Shorten that was distributed by McClure Newspaper Syndicate from 1946 until Fagaly’s death in 1963. The competition is modeled after a similar competition held by California State Sen. Joe Simitian. If not, please provide a status of these and any other similar investigations concerning reports of test cheating within the Philadelphia School District.” McGeehan noted that the newspaper account included the allegations that teachers were asked to ‘check that students’ answers were correct’ and an administrator ‘giving books back to kids if their answers were wrong.’ McGeehan asked for confirmation of the depth of the investigation and the use of erasure analysis, citing a recent investigation using the process by the State of Georgia into test cheating in the Atlanta public schools that allegedly involved 216 educators and principals. “The credibility of our education system depends on reliable and accurate testing of our students,” McGeehan concluded.

McGeehan has been sharply critical of the superintendent of Philadelphia schools, Arlene Ackerman, and her administrative policies.
State Rep. Michael McGeehan (D-Northeast) today requested State Education Secretary Ronald Tomalis follow up on reports that questioned the validity of test results from within the Philadelphia School District by releasing the results of the probe.
Rep. Johnson Calls For Community Action On Killings
In May, it was reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer that cheating allegedly occurred involving test scores at Theodore Roosevelt MS in East Germantown and FitzSimons HS in North Philadelphia. The School District was required to investigate the allegations received by the Education Dept. and report back within 45 days. As yet, the results of the investigation by the District have not been released. “I would like to confirm that the investigations of the testing allegations made concerning Roosevelt MS and FitzSimons HS have 4|
State Rep. Kenyatta Johnson (D-S. Phila.), community members and community leaders will lead a community action meeting and street tour tomorrow, Jul. 8. The meeting will be at the Dixon House, 1920 S. 20th St., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The tour will take place at 9 p.m. South Philadelphia, and the region as a whole, has been inundated with homicides. In an effort to fight against this ongoing concern, Johnson is inviting and urging everyone from community members to police officials to attend this meeting. “It’s time that we all step up and take an active role in stopping the violence in our neighborhoods,” Johnson states. “Our excuses are literally killing our youth, and we have to start holding ourselves accountable for putting an end
