Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and Congressman Bob Brady (D-Phila.) announced a $1.5 million Centers for Disease Control & Prevention grant to Philadelphia FIGHT’s Youth Health Empowerment Project to work with young people to reduce HIV infection rates. “This grant will help Philadelphia FIGHT continue its valuable work to reduce the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections among vulnerable communities in Philadelphia,” said Senator Casey. “I fully support the work of Philadelphia Fight,” said Brady. “And I applaud the organization for devel28 AUGUST, 2011

oping the I AM project that is designed to get out a message that will help save the lives of high risk teens and young men of color. This is important work.” Casey and Brady wrote letters of support to urge the CDC to approve this grant. Funding will be used to implement the “I AM” project, an idea created by Philadelphia FIGHT’s Youth Health Empowerment Project staff and participants to help their peers reduce risk. The project includes social media outreach, the creation of a culturally and ageappropriate safe space and the inclusion of the target population in the project’s content and development.

ual abuse.

The Children’s Alliance is a Child Advocacy Center that handles the forensic interviews for child sexual abuse victims and provides victim advocates to help families through this exceptionally difficult time in their lives. The Children’s Alliance works closely with Philadelphia’s police, human services staff and prosecutors to deliver a coordinated response to allegations of child sex-

“This funding allows the Children’s Alliance to be a regional leader for other Child Advocacy Centers to become as robust and as strong of a program, as we are here in Philadelphia,” said Chris Kirchner, Philadelphia Children’s Alliance executive director. “In 20 years, we have come a long way. We now have the capacity to serve 100% of child sexualabuse victims in the city and are

working to ramp up our funding and staff to be able to accommodate this,” Kirchner said. “We are very grateful to Congressman Fattah for recognizing how crucial our work is for these children and their families at this difficult time in their lives. He is focused on children’s wellbeing across the Commonwealth and is a great leader and supporter of child abuse issues.”

REVEALING million-dollar grant is Congressman Chaka Fattah, left, with Chris Kirchner, executive director of Phila. Children’s Alliance and 8th Dist. Council Democrat candidate Cindy Bass at Children’s Alliance this morning. Fattah came to tour Children’s Alliance and make the grant announcement.
