Penna. Senators Split On Trade Bills The Keystone State’s two US Senators belong to different parties and often disagree on policy. Yesterday, they went different ways on major legislation – although not in ways that reflected their party loyalties. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) praised the Senate’s passage of three pending trade agreements with South Korea, Columbia and Panama. The House of Representatives passed the agreements Tuesday. “Today is a fine example of how the president and Congress can advance policies in a bipartisan manner that will help turn our economy around. Rather than wasting more time on another stimulus bill that won’t create jobs, I am pleased that both parties worked together today to pass these three job-creating free trade agreements with South Korea, Columbia and Panama,” Toomey said. “As President Obama has noted, these free trade agreements will open up international markets to US products, make American companies more competitive and help our businesses create new jobs. Many Pennsylvania employers and workers will benefit from the passage of job-creating agreements, especially in the state’s vital manufacturing and agriculture industries. Expanding the markets for Pennsylvania’s products will boost our economy and put people back to work.” Toomey cited numerous Pennsyl12 OCTOBER, 2011

Increasing our market share and exports would mean securing or even adding jobs at our Macungie Mack Truck assembly facility.”
substantial number of new jobs? I am concerned they will not. If previous agreements are any indication, the South Korea, Columbia and Panama agreements will not create jobs and will in fact lead to job losses, especially in the critical manufacturing sector. Pennsylvania has seen a dramatic decline in manufacturing employment since the early 1990s, losing 308,000 manufacturing jobs.
