American Voters Like Obama Better This Week President Barack Obama’s job approval rating is up, from a negative 41-55% Oct. 5 to a split with 47% approving and 49% disapproving in a Quinnipiac University poll released today. The president has leads of 5 to 16 percentage points over likely Republican challengers. Voters also are divided 47-49% on whether Obama deserves reelection, compared to last month, when voters said 54-42% he did not deserve reelection. Former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain leads the Republican presidential primary field with 30%, followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney with 23%, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with 10% and Texas Gov. Rick Perry with 8%, the independent Quinnipiac

University poll finds. No other candidate tops 7%. Cain leads a head-to-head GOP race with Romney 47-39%, coming close to the critical 50% mark, even though more Republicans think Romney has the knowledge and experience to be president. “President Barack Obama seems to be improving in voters’ eyes almost across-the-board,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “He scores big gains among the groups with whom he has had the most problems – whites and men. Women also shift from a fivepoint negative to a four-point positive. “Whether this is a blip, perhaps because of the death of Moammar

Gadhafi and the slight improvement in some of the economic numbers, or the beginning of a sustained upward move in his popularity isn’t clear and won’t be for some time. Nevertheless, the movement allows the White House a sigh of relief, for the president’s approval had been stuck in the low 40s for some time and even a temporary upward move is good news for the folks at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.” Over the past month the president’s approval among men improved from 60-36% disapproval to 53-43% disapproval today; white voters shift from 6234% disapproval to 56- 40% disapproval. Women shift from a 51-46% disapproval last month to a 50-46% approval today.

Presidential Rebuff Of Catholic Patriarch Riles Middle East Christians An influential Muslim adviser to the White House, who has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, has succeeded in canceling a meeting between President Obama and the leader of the persecuted Maronite church in Lebanon, according to the Beirut news agency el Nashra. The Arabic-language report cited an unnamed US source who said Dahlia Mogahed, “the highest adviser on Arab and Islamic Affairs in the State Dept.,” sought to block a White House meeting with Patriarch Beshara Rahi, according to a translation by blogger El Cid at BigPeace.com.

The report said the move heeded a 2 NOVEMBER, 2011

request by top leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt who want the US to back the Islamist Sunni movement opposing Iranian Shiite influence in the region. Maronites number about 1 million in Lebanon and more than 10 millions worldwide. About 1.5 million are in the US. Along with her role on the White House Advisory Council on FaithBased and Neighborhood Partnerships, Mogahed is a member of the advisory council of the Department of Homeland Security. She has testified before the Senate on engagement with the Muslim comTHE PHILADELPHIA DAILY RECORD

munity. She is senior analyst and executive director of the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies, where she led major surveys of Muslims worldwide that routinely concluded the vast majority of Muslims are moderate. Mogahed was a leading voice in the Leadership Group on US-Muslim Engagement that issued a 153page advisory report calling for dialogue with Hamas and engagement with opposition parties in Egypt, including the Muslim Brotherhood. tion in February when he characterized the Muslim Brotherhood as “largely secular.” The Brotherhood, however, which was banned under Egypt’s Mubarak regime, states in its charter that it is an “international Muslim Body, which seeks to establish Allah’s law in the land by achieving the spiritual goals of Islam and the true religion.” Furthermore, the prosecution of the Hamas-financing scheme in Texas two years ago presented evidence of the Brotherhood’s aim to

destroy Western civilization from within and establish an Islamic society under the rule of the Quran. The Maronites are members of the Roman Catholic Church. Bishop Gregory Mansor, head of the Eastern Diocese headquartered in Brooklyn, NY, issued a scatting letter to President Barak Obama which was published and disseminated throughout the Maronite churches in the US. In part his letter reads, “Muslim and Christian groups have all found in him a real father, a Patriarch. Because he has spoken out expressing his concern for the fu-

ture of Christians in the Middle East, he has been rebuffed by you and your administration. It is pure hypocrisy for the leader of the free world to refuse to meet with Patriarch Rai, especially since the Prime Minister of Israel can come and completely disregard essential parts of a peace plan and still be given a warm welcome, and the King of Saudi Arabia where Christians have no freedom whatsoever, can be received with highest honors. Mr. President, you are ignoring the plight of the Christians in the Middle East….

State Rep. Ronald G. Waters (DW. Phila.), chairman of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, has announced a Youth Town Hall Meeting from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at West Philadelphia High School, 4901 Chestnut Street. The theme of the town hall is “Education over Incarceration.” “We hope this meeting will result in a dialogue where youth feel comfortable to share their fears, hopes and dreams,” Waters said. “We want to show how valuable an education is to reach career goals.”

“A new day is dawning in the Middle East. The Arab Spring is happening with little vision for the summer that will ensue. Mr. President, you do not have to agree on everything with Patriarch Rai, but there is no need to avoid or rebuff him. By doing so, you are showing disrespect for him and for all Christians everywhere, especially those being persecuted throughout the Middle East.”

Two community groups, Youth United for Change and the Philadelphia Student Union, will be partnering with the PLBC for the event. Both groups are made up with city youth who are concerned about education, violence and the city curfew. “Education is a crucial step for youth to break the cycle of violence which too often leads to incarceration instead of graduation,” Waters said. For more information, contact Waters’ office at (215) 748-6712.

TWU Endorses Mayor Nutter

Transport Workers Union Local 234 endorsed Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s re-election bid Oct. 26, at a press conference in the union’s hall at 500 N. 2nd Street. TWU Local 234 is SEPTA’s largest union, representing about 5,000 drivers, mechanics, cashiers, porters and others. Union president John Johnson Jr. cited Mayor Nutter’s support for transit workers following a string of assaults on SEPTA drivers as one reason for the union’s support (PA Senate Bill No. 236 would make assault on a public transportation worker a felony offense.) He also praised Mayor Nutter for his dialogue with state and federal officials around transit funding issues and for his inclusion of public transit in economic development and sustainability efforts in the city.
