PREVENTING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE was mission of State Sen. Shirley Kitchen’s annual “Mothers & Daughters Day,” a free informational event to raise awareness. Held in conjunction with Gwendolyn WestSutton of Nguza Saba Project and Lady-G Enterprises., Senator, center, treated women and teenage daughters to event Saturday at Honickman Learning Center in N. Phila., Participants learned about options and resources for women and benefited from speakers, discussion groups, giveaways, prizes, breakfast and lunch. Kitchen said event aimed to help “women and young ladies live in a peaceful and loving environment.”

The second was less obvious, but just as important: Any deficit reduction proposal must encourage the job creation our economy desperately needs. With the country’s unemployment still too high, the last thing we needed was a proposal that would weaken our already struggling economy.

by US Sen. Pat Toomey “By now, most folks in Pennsylvania know that the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (commonly known as the super committee) did not meet its goal of finding $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction. To say I am disappointed is a huge understatement.

“As one of the 12 members of the super committee, I approached our assigned task with cautious optimism. I knew finding a bipartisan agreement would be a challenge.

Nevertheless, I felt that the committee presented an invaluable opportunity to put our federal government on a sustainable fiscal path, and we could not afford to waste it.

“From the outset, I laid out two fundamental and fairly noncontroversial principles to guide our dis-

If Republicans and Democrats huddled in their respective corners and refused to budge, the biggest losers in this process wouldn’t be the so-called super committee - it would be the American people.

That is why I drafted a proposal that put a genuine compromise on the table on both the spending and the revenue sides of the equation.

“On the spending side, Republicans identified several trillions of dollars in sensible, responsible reductions that would have actually solved our fiscal crisis. In the face of fierce Democratic opposition, we agreed to scale back our proposal to just $750 billion in cuts over the next decade – less than 2% of what our government is projected to spend over the next 10 years.

“On the revenue side, we offered a plan that would reform our broken tax code and create millions of jobs in the process. The proposal replaced our current monstrosity of a tax code with a simpler and fairer version that would have lowered tax rates for all Americans while eliminating special-interest deductions, write-offs and loopholes. This proposal would have spurred our small businesses to expand and hire new workers and encouraged creative, hardworking Americans to open new businesses.

“Furthermore, this reform would have been permanent so that job creators across America would know they would not be subject to the biggest tax hike in American history, which is currently looming a mere 14 months away.

“Finally, we offered to meet our Democratic colleagues part way, proposing to use this tax reform as a way to generate tax revenue for deficit reduction. Even the secondhighest ranking Democrat in the Senate described my compromise offer as a “breakthrough.”

“Unfortunately, my Democratic colleagues on the Joint Select Committee weren’t interested, insisting on a minimum of a $1 trillion tax increase. My Republican colleagues and I felt imposing a $1 trillion tax increase on our struggling economy would be devastat-

“Even though the super committee is over, I don’t intend to give up.

Over the course of many conversations, we developed many commonsense ideas that I will bring to my Democratic and Republican colleagues who did not serve on the super committee. I hope to work with members on both sides of the aisle to find ways to reduce our deficit without crushing our fragile economy.”

Penna. Leads Nation By Adopting Driver’s-License Holograms The Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation today deployed a new security hologram that makes it easier to spot fake drivers’ licenses and identification cards. Pennsylvania is the first state in the nation to use this enhanced security feature.

“A driver’s license or identification card has always been a trusted source for establishing a person’s true identity,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch. “We are steadfast in our resolve to combat counterfeit forms of identification, which ultimately jeopardize lives and hold great potential for harm to our national security.”

The new hologram suppresses the “rainbow” colors normally associated with

holographic images. The result is a hologram that appears to switch between white and black as the image is moved.

Also, because the new image is of a much-higher resolution, it is clearly visible in bright, moderate and even low-light environments.

This state-of-the-art technology is added to an array of security features including a holographic overlay of county names and keystone outlines already embedded in current license and ID cards.

Fattah Addresses College Financing Conference At Drexel Congressman Chaka Fattah (DPhila.) addressed college-access and college-finance professionals this morning at Drexel University.

He discussed how to prepare young people from low-income and underserved backgrounds for the challenges and rigors of higher

education. He also addressed issues facing current and future students, federal legislation impacting on student aid for higher education, changes in Pell Grant funding and loan repayment rules, and opportunities for advocacy.

Fattah shared the panel with Pauline Abernathy, VP of the Institute for College Access & Success, with an audience of 100 professionals in an all-day conference.

Josephs Names Key Campaign Treasurer State Rep. Babette Josephs (D-S. Phila.) has tapped Philadelphia attorney Andrew Chirls as her campaign treasurer.

A partner at Philadelphia’s Haines & Associates, Chirls was chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 2005. He was the first lawyer to represent a plaintiff in an AIDS or HIV discrimination case presented to a jury in Pennsylvania, and has been involved in several consumer protection and class action lawsuits. Josephs is running for her 13th term representing Pennsylvania’s 182nd Dist., which includes most of Center City and parts of South Philadelphia.

“Andy has a record of accomplishment and an impeccable reputation,” Josephs said. “I couldn’t ask for a more upright and trustworthy person to work with. As a lawyer, he’s done what I’ve worked to do every day in Harrisburg, protect citizens. Andy fights for the good guys, and I’m de8|

Chirls has represented individual workers as well as groups in cases of wrongful discharge and discrimination in the wake of terminations and layoffs. He was the representative of the AHP Settlement Trust, which administered a $4.3 billion class settlement arising from marketing of the dietdrug combination known as Fen Phen. Chirls has been a member of the Philadelphia Human Relations Commission, the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund’s national board, and Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program’s board of directors. He currently serves as president of BalletX, the resident dance company at The Wilma Theater. In 2005, Chirls was elected chancellor of the 13,000member Philadelphia Bar Association, the first openly gay leader in the organization’s 203-year history.

advocate and a fearless fighter for equality and civil rights,” Chirls said. “Entrenched Republican legislators are trying to use their majority to roll back all the gains we’ve made over the years, but Babette is there to stop them.”

Serving the 182nd Dist. for the past 26 years, Babette Josephs is the seniormost woman legislator in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. As the Democratic chairperson of the State Government Committee, she has successfully blocked much of right-wing Republican Daryl Metcalfe’s radical agenda. Josephs has repeatedly turned back anti-Latino and antiimmigration legislation and consistently stood up for the rights of women and the LGBT community.

Josephs is the only member of the General Assembly who does not own, lease, or even drive a car.

She depends on public transportation to get everywhere.

Natural Sciences Calls Exec, 2 Drexel Honchos To Its Board The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University today announced the election of a new chair of its governing board and three new trustees from Drexel.

Cynthia Heckscher, managing director of Diversified Search, a leading provider of executivesearch services, was named to lead the board of the nation’s oldest natural-history museum as it prepares to celebrate its 200th anniversary.

Heckscher, of Philadelphia, joined the board in 2009. She replaces Board Chairman James Macaleer, who remains a trustee.

With the recent affiliation with Drexel University, the Academy welcomed to its board Drexel President John A. Fry, Drexel Provost and Senior VP for academic affairs Dr. Mark L. Greenberg, and Drexel CFO Helen Bowman.

“We are so pleased to work with our new, distinguished trustees from Drexel University, as we continue to define our affiliation and prepare to celebrate our bicentennial starting in March,” said Academy President George W. Gephart, Jr. “And we all are looking for-

ward to working with Cindy, who is only the second female chair in our long, distinguished history.”

Heckscher has served on several Academy board committees, including the one that helped make the idea for a partnership with Drexel a reality. “The two institutions have tremendously compatible missions and more-than-compatible leaders,” she said.
