Auto Insurers Sting The Poor N.J. Company Wants New Regs

A Class By Herself by Joe Shaheeli Had scheduling allowed it, there is no doubt President-Elect Barack Obama would have been in attendance along with the hundreds of friends and colleagues who gathered Monday at St. Matthews A.M.E. Church, 57th & Vine Streets, for the funeral services of Councilwoman Carol Ann Campbell. She had been in Obama’s corner long before there was any indication he could be the serious contender for the Democratic nomination for President, especially in a state whose Democratic powerhouse had already committed to his opponent. Among those who did attend and take part in the funeral services were Mayor Michael Nutter, former Mayor John Street, Congressman Robert A. Brady and Chaka Fattah, Council President Anna Verna, State Sens. LeAnna Washington and Anthony Williams, former House Speaker John Perzel, State Rep. Louise Williams Bishop, Rep.-Elect Vanessa Brown, and the Members of City Council. But death comes on its own schedule as it did to Carol Ann, at the age of 71 and after an intense struggle of several months. While she fought to get better, medical staffs marveled at the calls she was constantly making to and receiving from on behalf of constituents. Carol Ann Campbell was a stickler for details, leaving little to chance, and used her telephone to reach and move the high and the lowly. The following information was drawn from the Funeral Services program written in part by her family: “Carol Ann Campbell was one of the most powerful political forces the city of Philadelphia has ever known. Her lifetime of tireless dedication to the citizens of the city she loved came to an end Wednesday, Nov. 19 at Methodist Hospital. (Cont. Page 5)

by Tony West If you’re well educated, hold a prosperous job and own your own home, you can get a sweet deal on automobile-insurance. Don’t worry too much about your driving record. If you took a pass on college, hold a blue-collar job and rent an apartment, on the other hand … look out! That same company may decide to clean your clock when you buy the same amount of coverage, no matter how safe a driver you are. Perhaps you thought your credit score would have no impact on your auto insurance rates, since you’re not borrowing anything from your insurer – quite the contrary, in fact. But it probably does. Most insurance companies use credit ratings as a measure (Cont. Page 2)

INSURANCE executive Eric Poe announces his company CURE Auto Insurance’s entry into Pennsylvania market in Love Park. Major insurers unfairly discriminate against good drivers from lower income and educational levels, he charged.

Is It Time To Nix School TransPass? Get the feeling subway travel is not as safe as it can be, especially during school rush hours? Controller Alan Butkovitz has just released an audit of SEPTA’s subway system which proves riders have justified concerns over their safety. As a result of the recent murder of Sean Conroy in the Subway Concourse, Butkovitz ordered his office to “conduct a comprehensive review of SEPTA’s subway security and the authority’s ability to protect commuters who ride the subway.” Butkovitz’ audit revealed, “Youth violence and homelessness are significant security challenges for both SEPTA and City Police. Fifty percent of all serious crime on the transit system is committed by youth. Disorderly-conduct crimes increased over 30% since the introduction of the student TransPass. It is estimated 15,000 Philadelphia school students are reported as truant by the School District.” (Cont. Page 2)
