Save Our Mummers! The “Save the Mummers” appeal went into online overdrive this week as thousands hit their website to donate money. In an attempt to raise prize money for this year’s strut and for future parades, the Mummers Museum set a fund for the public to raise money. Just hours after the 2009 parade was saved from Mayor Michael Nutter’s budget cuts, the Mummers Association created a link on its website for people to donate to save future struts. Their website was so overloaded with online donations that it froze on the donation links. Even though the City announced there would be a parade this year, it has withdrawn support for all prize money and is now demanding payment from the Mummers for Police and Sanitation employees. ‘Mama Jane’ Brings Festive Cheer All Year
‘MISS JANE’ Arizoro with her pushcart full of goodies brings some Christmas cheer to kids at Riverview Senior Tower, 4th Street & Washington Avenue. She gives kids toys she collects year round. She also makes dinner for seniors at apartment complex every Sunday.
by Lois Bartella Jane Arizoro will celebrate her birthday today the way she does every Christmas Eve: collecting her gifts, putting them in a pushcart and then giving them away to the needy. Affectionately called “Mama Jane”, although she prefers to be called “Miss Jane”, Arizoro has brought cooked food and other goodies to homeless and underprivileged persons in her South Philadelphia neighborhood for the past 10 years. Arizoro is a senior citizen who takes care of her handicapped mother, both living in the Riverview Senior Tower Apartments at 4th Street & Washington Avenue. With a pushcart, she brings cooked food throughout the immediate neighborhood and often has toys and other surprises for the area children. Kimberly Washington, one of her ardent admirers, is heatedly enthusiastic in her praise for the kind-hearted woman. She cites the fact Jane, who is barely able to support herself, uses (Cont. Page 2)
