SEPTA Major Mover In Cleanup
SEPTA continues to grow as one of the city’s most-active community partners. Its employees and administration played a major part in the Mayor’s cleanup. They partnered with City Year and other volunteers and cleaned through areas normally not under the radar of cleanup squads. SEPTA General Mgr. Joseph Casey and SEPTA employees did their best to move mounds of trash at the Festival Pier and around 52nd & Market. Mayor Michael Nutter said, “SEPTA’s doing its part upgrading its fleet, bringing in new hybrid vehicles … they’ve been doing a great job. I like the slogan ‘SEPTA Here To (Cont. Page 2)
PHA, Penn Students Build A Playground
Philadelphia Housing Authority volunteers, students from the University of Pennsylvania and a Washington, D.C.-based charitable organization have banded together to give one of PHA’s oldest sites a much-needed, brand-new playground. Oxford Village, a historic site located in Northeast Philadelphia at 6150 Algon Avenue, was lacking equipment on which residents’ children could safely play. City Council OKs PPA University City Towing Illegal parking throughout University City has created a host of problems in that area, bringing a response by City Council to authorize the towing there of illegally parked cars. Responding to complaints about increased traffic congestion in the University City area because of the closing of the South Street bridge, City Council joined with the Philadelphia Parking Authority to authorize the towing of illegally parked vehicles in the area between Schuylkill Avenue to 40th Street and Arch and Filbert Streets to Woodland and University Avenue – which includes the business and campus areas around Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania. Alan Butkovitz Flunk$ $chool$ City Controller Alan Butkovitz has released the Philadelphia School District 2008 Student Activity Funds audit that found all 15 high schools that were reviewed, had failed to comply with the School District's rules and procedures for student activity funds.
