by Saddie Agnes There’s no doubt we live in one of the most ethnic areas of the City, and at Fleischer Art Memorial they continue show off the talents of our culturally diverse city. Fleischer Art Memorial hosted a fun family day last week promoting the arts as an avenue of inspiration for our youth. The event brought families from all over the city to South Philadelphia together to share in creative ways to make impressions in art a release for the hundreds in attendance.

“Reporting South Philadelphia the way it deserves”

On offer were events as outlandish as art with food (and not just macaroni but fresh vegetables as well) to something as simple like sidewalk chalk art. Dance groups performed for the crowd with the message “the arts are for everyone and every form is appreciated." The hip-hop breakdancing group called the Southeastern Coalition promotes “arts not gangs”. Another dance group that performed "Yaretzi", thrilled the audience with their Mexican heritage. Dancing To The Same Beat 2 Police Officers Saluted For Uniting Community It’s Boot Camp Time At Bartram Gardens It’s summer boot camp again at Bartram Gardens. Conducted by Paul “Earthquake” Moore, the boot camps are held every Saturday and Sunday at the 54th Street & Lindbergh Boulevard site. “It’s important to let children know getting an education is the priority, not carrying weapons,” said Moore. “Boot camp gives them these ideas on how to be a better person and a better student. By R. George Linton Two South Philadelphia Police Officers have found a unique way to cover their beat … through dance. Sharon Bailey and Frank Holmes developed the 17th Dist. Imperial Dance Squad dance team in an effort to unite Police Officers and young adults in a positive manner to build relationships. On Monday afternoon, State Rep. Thanks to Music Mogul and Chairman of Universal Companies, Kenneth Gamble and philanthropist David Pincus, the new state of the art community playground and the Wellness of You Organic Community Garden opened last week. The new state of the art playground located on 1500 block of Catharine Street is the vision of Mr. & Mrs. Gamble. “For the past 10 years, my wife, Faatimah and I observed the children in the neighborhood, including the children from the Universal Institute Charter School playing in the streets which were very unsafe and we realized the need to develop a playground and safe haven for our children to play,” said Gamble.
