America might ‘run on Dunkin’, as the Dunkin’ Donuts franchise claims in their advertisements, but a local bagel store owner is running around the City in an attempt to keep a long time South Philadelphia business alive. Christian Cerreto, owner of the Philadelphia Bagels store on Delaware and Washington Avenues, admits the Dunkin’ Donuts around the corner has hurt his 22 year-old family business; however Cerreto is adapting the way he does his bagel business. “With the economy the way it is, I

changed the focus of the business a little bit,” Cerretto says. “The majority of my business is wholesale; we deliver all over, all day, seven days a week now.” On the corner of Delaware and Washington lies a family owned, family tradition. The Philly Bagel shop has been there when it was just them and the railroads. Started in 1987, Frank Cerretto, Christian’s father, was in the food distribution business on the waterfront, and not a bread maker by trade, (Cont. Page 2)

WAVE Program Saves $$ VOTE FOR VICTORINO South Philadelphia has one day left to get its favorite “flying Hawaiian,” Shane Victorino, in the All Star Game. Shane needs your vote to get a spot on National League team for this year’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game to be played in St. Louis, Jul. 14. Mayor Nutter campaigned with Victorino in South Philadelphia Tuesday, encouraging residents to get online and vote for Victorino. “Monday’s incredible performance demonstrated just what a talent Shane Victorino is, certainly worthy of the All-Star Game,” said Mayor Nutter. “Unlike regular elections, you can vote early and often for Shane, and he needs all of our support. I urge everyone to get online and vote for Victorino!” Chase Utley, Raul Ibanez, and Ryan Howard have already made the National League All-Star squad. Jumping In Feet First to Fight For Homeless by Maria Merlino State Sen. Larry Farnese is enthusiastic about fulfilling a promise he made to the constituents of the First District. “The number one issue that ran through every meeting was the problem of homelessness, he updates me. “ They want to know the causes of it, and the quality of life issues it signifies. “ When I ask the Senator what is the root of this societal iniquity, his immediate answer was, “poverty and a lack of affordable housing.” Being homeless has its complexities. The Wilson Park resident had her apartment upgraded; she had a successful knee replacement, and enjoyed a birthday dinner with her family, Yesterday! It was as if Sawyer’s birthdays came all at once. “This is crazy! Sawyer said as a crew worked in her home, Tuesday. “It’s like I have a new home, and just in time for my birthday!” The Philadelphia Housing Authority crews made sure she had her Apartment upgraded, thanks to its groundbreaking Maintenance WAVE program that benefits the environment, residents and the local economy.
