Marzano Inspires Epiphany Half-Ball by Maria Merlino South Philadelphia’s favorite son John Marzano may no longer be with us in person, but his spirit still lives in each of our neighborhoods. Before Marzano left us, the former Phillies catcher brought the old HalfBall game back to life at the Italian Market Festival. Epiphany Festival organizers took inspiration from this and decided they would try it out as a charity tournament. And last weekend, Epiphany succeeded! Fourteen teams brought their sticks and balls to battle for bragging rights and in their struggle the HalfBall tourney raised over $1,400 for the parish and school. “We saw the positive note the John Marzano Half-Ball Tournament brought to the 9th Street Italian Festival and we thought it would be a good idea to incorporate for Epiphany’s celebration,” said Hugh Quigley, who organized the Epiphany Half-Ball charity game with his brother, Joe. He said, “Many of these guys played as kids and so we have a nostalgia factor. It’s also good camaraderie. We see it as our heritage and a great way to support the parish and school.” Half-Ball has come a long way since the days of playing with a discarded wooden broom handle, a bisected pimple ball and a three-story wall. “We had 14 teams sign up,” said coordinator Joe Quigley. “There are four members on each team; any age (Cont.
