Two South Philadelphia residents were laughing all the way to the bank last week as they split a $20,000 Bingo Prize, thanks to a few farm animals. The pair, who wanted to remain nameless, for security reasons, each bought $20 tickets at the First Annual Cow Chip Bingo fundraiser in Grays Ferry last weekend and walked away big winners. Grays Ferry Community Council teamed up with Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer charity and the

South Philly To Put On Its Own Italian Heritage Festival by R. George Linton Thousands are expected to head to Marconi Plaza this Sunday, as South Philadelphia puts on its very own Columbus Day festival. Despite the City cutting the official Columbus Day celebration, which has sailed down Broad Street for 53 years, festival-committee members have a special celebration planned. The Committee will put the $4,000 from the Commerce Dept.’s activities fund – as well as the special donations it received – to good use. Jody Della Barba, chairwoman of the Columbus Day Committee, said, “We are obviously disapointed not to have a full parade, but our Italian Heritage Festival will give South Philadelphia’s Italian community a chance to celebrate, just the same way as they do each year.”

Grad Student Makes History At La Salle A South Philadelphia graduate student will make history at La Salle University when she starts a new program this fall. Samantha Slade, 31, who lives on E. Passyunk Avenue, is among a select group of students set to take part in a new Public History Master’s program, geared towards archivists, librarians, and researchers. “I love the field because I get to aid people in discovering ‘hidden collections’ that have been sitting in boxes gathering dust,” said Slade, who lives on E. Passyunk Avenue. In her capacity at La Salle, Slade is designing the University’s first digital library and archive. In addition, she works with La Salle’s Digital Arts program to provide electronic access to students’ digital history projects. (Cont. page 2)
