On Oregon Avenue, hundreds joined in to celebrate the Marine Corps Birthday bash at Cookie’s Tavern. Pointed In The Right Direction by R. George Linton Opening this weekend is a brand-new after-school program that is ready to point our children in the right direction. The Point Breeze Youth Development Center will celebrate opening its new education center on Saturday. The center is set up to provide South Philadelphia kids aged 10-19 with after-school programs and social services. “Our focus is to empower, invoke and strengthen the lives of our youth, their parents and our community permanently,” said Kenyatta Bey, president of the Center. ‘The Point’ will provide preventative measures as well as management for conditions that ail the community. These ailments include, but are not limited to, violence and crime prevention, truancy, youth ex-offender reengagement, drug and alcohol awareness and teen pregnancy.” The center will officially open its doors on Saturday, Nov.14 between 2 and 7 p.m. The opening will feature free food, health screenings and many giveaways. Vento Gives $25,000; Community Rallies Behind Giardello Statue Project by Rory G. McGlasson

A life-size statue to honor South Philadelphia’s real life “Rocky” is one round closer to completion, thanks to some very generous pockets. The man with the golden glove, Joey Vento, pledged another $5,000 toward the Joey Giardello Statue project at a fundraiser at the Waterfall Room. Vento had already donated $20,000. Thanks to hundreds of other supporters who bought tickets and entered an auction, another $4,000 was raised at the benefit. The project got a $5,000 State grant from State Sen. Larry Farnese.
