Israeli Agent Believes US Ripe For Major Terrorist Attack Juval Aviv, the Israeli agent upon whom the movie Munich was based, predicted the London subway bombing on the Bill O’Reilly Show on Fox News a week before it happened.

At the time, O’Reilly laughed and mocked him, saying that in a week he

wanted him back on the show. Unfortunately, within a week the terrorist attack had occurred.

Aviv gave intelligence to the Bush Administration about 9/11, a month before it occurred. His report specifically said they would use planes as bombs and target high-

profile buildings and monuments. Congress has since hired him as a security consultant.

Now for the future. Aviv predicts the next terrorist attack on the US will occur within the next few months.

Forget hijacking airplanes! Aviv says terrorists will never try to hijack a plane

again, as they know the people on board will never go down quietly again. Aviv believes our airport security is a joke — we have been reactionary rather than proactive in developing strategies that are truly effective.

Contending “The Supreme Court’s ruling on campaign contributions dismantles 100 years of legal precedent and legislative action and sets up a system where our elections are for sale to the highest corporate bidder,” Congressman Bob Brady, chair of the House Administration Committee, has set in motion leadership and White House efforts to institute legislative action to negate that decision.

Brady said, “By removing restrictions on direct expenditures from corporate treasuries, the Court has laid waste to measures that prohibit these entities from exercising massive and unchecked influence over the American voting system.

“I will be working directly with my colleagues, the leadership and the White House to study the Court’s decision and to put together a timeline for legislative action that ensures the Court’s decision will not define the ways elections are conducted in 2010.”

Terrorist Attacks To Target Several Cities (Cont. From Page 1) For example, our airport technology is outdated. We look for metal, but the new explosives are made of plastic.

Because a terrorist tried to light his shoe on fire, now everyone has to take off their shoes. A group of terrorists tried to bring aboard liquid explosives. Now we can’t bring liquids on board.

Aviv says he’s waiting for some suicidal maniac to pour liquid explosive on his underwear; at which point, security will have us all traveling naked! Every strategy we have is reactionary.

Worst of all, he notes, we only focus on security when people are heading to the gates.

Aviv says if a terrorist attack targets airports in the future, he will target busy times on the front end of the airport where people are checking in. It would be easy for someone to take two suitcases of explosives, walk up to a busy check-in line, ask a person next to them to watch their bags for a minute while they run to the restroom or get a drink, and then detonate the bags before security even gets involved. In Israel, security checks bags before people can even enter the airport.

Aviv says the next terrorist attack here in America is imminent and will involve suicide bombers and non-suicide bombers in places where large groups of people congregate. (i.e., Disneyland, Las Vegas casinos, big

cities (New York, San Francisco, Chicago, etc.) and it will also include shopping malls, subways in rush hour, train stations, etc., as well as rural America this time. The hinterlands (Wyoming, Montana, etc.) will no longer be passed over.

The attack will be characterized by simultaneous detonations around the country (terrorists like a dramatic impact), involving at least five to eight cities and rural areas.

Aviv says terrorists won’t need to use suicide bombers in many of the larger cities, because at places like the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, they can simply valet park a car loaded with explosives and walk away.

Aviv says all of the above is well known in intelligence circles, but our US government does not want to “alarm American citizens” with the facts. On an encouraging note, he says Americans don’t have to be concerned about being nuked. Aviv says the terrorists who want to destroy America will not use sophisticated weapons. They like to use suicide as a front-line approach. It’s cheap, it’s easy, it’s effective; and they have an infinite abundance of young militants more than willing to meet their destiny.

He also says the next wave of terrorists, over which America should be most concerned, will not be coming from abroad. Instead, they will be homegrown, having attended and been educated in our own

in Chicago, someone tried to steal the briefcase!

In comparison, Aviv says citizens of Israel are so well trained that an unattended bag or package would be reported in seconds by citizens who know to publicly shout, “Unattended bag!” The area would be quickly and calmly cleared by the citizens themselves.

Aviv also was concerned about the high number of children here in America who were in preschool and kindergarten after 9/11, who were lost without parents to pick them up, and about our schools that had no plan in place to care for the students until parents could get there. (In New York City, this lasted days in some cases!)

He stresses the importance of having a plan, that’s agreed upon within your family, of how to respond in the event of a terrorist emergency. He urges parents to contact their children’s schools and demand the schools too develop plans of actions, just as they do in Israel.

Aviv says the US government has in force a plan that, in the event of another terrorist attack, everyone’s ability to use cell phones, blackberries, etc., will immediately be cut off, as this is the preferred communication source used by terrorists and is often the way their bombs are detonated.

He notes, “Without a plan, you won’t be able to communicate.”

Saidel will have the support of the formidable Philadelphia Democratic Party machine, led by the enthusiastic support of its leader, Congressman Bob Brady, and a host of leading Democrats throughout the five-county area, both at the Democratic State Committee meeting in February and at the polls on primary day, May 18.

Saidel told the crowd of heavy hitters who packed the City Hall Reception Room he was running for the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor “because I miss helping people. There is nothing like it.”

Saidel, who had been practicing law since serving as

schools and universities here in the US. He says to look for students who frequently travel back and forth to the Middle East. These young terrorists will be most dangerous because they will know our language and will fully understand the habits of Americans; but we Americans won’t know/understand a thing about them.

Aviv says, as a people, Americans are unaware and uneducated about the terrorist threats we will inevitably face. America still has only a handful of Arabic- and Farsispeaking people in our intelligence networks, and Aviv says it is critical we change that fact soon.

So, what can America do to protect itself?

From an intelligence perspective, Aviv says the US needs to stop relying on satellites and technology for intelligence. It needs to follow Israel’s, Ireland’s and England’s hands-on examples of human intelligence, both from an infiltration perspective as well as to pay attention to, and trust, aware citizens to help.

Our government, he says, thinks we can’t handle the truth and are concerned we’ll panic if we understand the realities of terrorism.

Aviv says this is a deadly mistake.

Philadelphian Tom Knox dropping out of the Democratic nomination for Governor has immediately boiled down the race for that slot to two men, regardless of who else decides to stay in the race.

Knox pulled out, throwing what support he has to Allegheny Co. Commissioner Dan Onorato, a fact not overlooked by the other top runner, Auditor General Jack Wagner.

Wagner has been pulling in votes from State Committee people and Party leaders around the Commonwealth.

Latest to join his bandwagon were William O’Gurek, chairman of the Carbon Co. Board of Commissioners, with four of his fellow officers, along with Justin Yainch and Jeremy Melbert, both Jim Thorpe Borough Councilmen. The leader of the Montour Co. Democratic Party, Henry “Butch” Coira, on Monday announced his committee’s endorsement of Auditor General Jack Wagner for Governor.

Wagner, a decorated Marine Combat veteran in the Vietnam War, twice elected with bipartisan support as the State’s independent fiscalwatchdog, received recordbreaking vote totals in his

re-election in 2008. He has been adding more supporters and endorsements every week to his campaign for Governor, including the chairs of Democratic Party committees in Bedford, Cameron, Clarion, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lebanon, Lycoming, Northumberland and Somerset Cos., as well as the affiliated political-action committee of the Pennsylvania Business Council and Henry Nicholas, president of the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees, AFSCME, AFL-CIO and president of District 1199c of the national union.

In the meantime, the Pennsylvania Progressive Summit, scheduled for Jan. 29-30 at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey, will be the next meeting place where those who remain in the gubernatorial race can sniff around for additional support.

The Summit, with a registration cost of $100, will feature 48 workshops, panel discussions and films, as well as great opportunities for networking with progressives from across Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

Indicating appearances are Sen. Arlen Specter and Congressman Joe Sestak, who try to prove each is more progressive than the other, with Friday night featuring a gubernatorial debate between Chris Doherty, Joe Hoeffel, Dan Onorato and Jack Wagner.

In the meantime, Hoeffel made the announcement before a packed house at the Constitution Center in Philadelphia of his entry into race, stating emphatically he is out “to win the Democratic nomination for Governor.”

Sen. Williams Chides Dem Gov. Candidates State Sen. Anthony Williams warned the current flock of Democrats seeking the Party’s endorsement for

Governor in the May 18 primary to start talking jobs for the African American community, hard hit by the recession. If they want the help of the City’s Black Caucus of elected officials and ward leaders, they’d better come up with plans to make more jobs available, especially to minorities. He had threatened to join the primary race himself, if he doesn’t get satisfactory replies.

Russ Diamond Launches Bid For Lt. Governor If all the Republican contenders running for Lieutenant Governor remain on the primary battle, County and City Commissioners may find they will need to use their skills to make sure all get on the voting-machine ballot.

Latest to announce is reform leader Russ Diamond, whose platform includes a plan for a citizens’ constitutional convention, the elimination of property taxes and defending Pennsylvania from Federal intrusion.

“Pennsylvania needs a strong advocate for reform in the executive branch,” Diamond said. “It’s easy to talk about reform but there’s really only one way to get it – a constitutional convention. But if we want to hold a convention, we need a specific plan to make it happen. I am the only Statewide candidate with a legitimate, workable plan in hand.”

Toomey’s Polls Look Formidable For Now Republican Pat Toomey now leads incumbent Sen. Arlen Specter 49% to 40% in Pennsylvania’s race for the US Senate. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Pennsylvania voters also finds Toomey with a 43% to 35% lead over Democratic challenger Joe Sestak.

A month ago, Toomey led Specter by four and Sestak by six. In the State’s Democratic Senate primary race, Specter now leads Sestak by 21 points.

Those who strongly oppose the health-care plan overwhelmingly prefer Toomey over either Democrat. Those who strongly favor the plan prefer the Democrats.

Pennsylvania attitudes towards the health-care plan are similar to the national average. The health-care issue played a key role in Tuesday’s stunning Massachusetts special Senate election.

Toomey Looks To Be Fearsome Favorite voters rate the economy as “good” or “excellent”, while 51% say “poor”. Only 31% say it’s “getting better”, while 42% say it’s “getting worse”.

Fitzpatrick, the father of six, feels the time is right for him to regain the seat. “The people are ready for a common-sense approach to government – one that does not include ramming a health-care bill down the throats of all Americans,” he said.

Leadership Battle Shaping In 2nd Ward Philadelphia resident and New Jersey attorney Peter Fiorentino announced this week on his Wednesday radio show on WNJC, 1360 AM, that Nick Schmanek, longtime aide to 1st Dist. Councilman Frank DiCicco, will be challenging newly-elected Ward Leader Ed Nesmith, a Philadelphia developer, for the 2nd Ward Democratic chieftainship.

Nesmith recently took over the Ward from Tony Palmiere, who had resigned and supported Nesmith, a major force in the 2nd Ward for over two decades. Nesmith’s father before him was one of the Ward’s top committeepersons.

trouble getting my mind wrapped around this concept of a religion being offensive to someone from another religion or non-religion.

George Amandola Global Warming’s Real The editorial cartoon in the Jan. 7, 2010 issue used our big, cold snap to ridicule the idea of global warming. The trouble is that even though some parts of the planet may get colder at times, and others warmer, overall temperatures on land and in oceans have risen due to what is better called “climate change,” which, of course, is a result of the”greenhouse effect”

from industrial pollutants preventing global heat from escaping into space. In any case, no human or other living organism, especially their respiratory systems, benefits from those air pollutants, overwhelmingly from fossil fuels.

This alteration brings drastic weather changes, which may even include balmy, comfortable days in ordinarily cold and raw seasons. This cold blast may well be a result of warming oceans that attract Arctic air-flows in our direction, just as those same changes have brought deadly Saharan weather conditions from across the Mediterranean to parts of Europe in the summer.

One really pathetic part of this is we have to buy more oil and gas for heat (or air conditioning) to protect ourselves from conditions caused largely by those same oil and gas and other climate-changing fossil-fuel industries. So to speak, we pay Al Capone for bullet-proof windows to protect us from the Capone gang’s bullets.

How can you not be for Jonathan Saidel if you are a Philadelphia voter? In fact, is there anywhere in the Commonwealth Saidel is not known? Who else could invigorate the Lieutenant Governor’s seat more than Saidel?

He’s truly one of the most beloved political figures dotting the landscape. His role as our long-time City Controller underlined his abilities as a concerned public servant, always viewing his stewardship with what was most beneficial for the common good. His ability to connect with audiences, often in a humorous fashion, has kept him in demand as a master of ceremonies.

His knowledge of government has few peers. His understanding of the inner workings of the political machinery of all parties has often been sought by others. Saidel has never said no to any request for the good uses of his office. His withdrawal from the political scene for the past several years had created a vacuum. Now that he is running for Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth, he’s reenergizing a corps of supporters who had been dismayed at his leaving the political arena.

He will be a welcome addition to the Senate chambers as Lieutenant Governor, sure to keep the Senators amused as they find themselves deadlocked or bored.

There are scores of other reasons why Jonathan Saidel is our favorite son for the position of Lieutenant Governor in the Democratic primary. Just talk to anyone who has met Saidel, and each will add an extra one to your list.

We wish Party Chairman Bob Brady well as he uses his skills when Democratic State Committee meets to garner the Party’s endorsement for Brady. With or without such support, he will come out of Philadelphia with an overwhelming advantage over anyone else who seeks that office in the Democratic primary.

by Joe Shaheeli The 192nd House Dist., which embraces Overbrook, Wynnefield and Carroll Park, is poised for a primary dustup on the Democratic side this spring. Will Mega, a 37-yearold community organizer, has launched a drive to unseat veteran legislator State Rep. Louise Williams Bishop, four decades older than Mega, who has served that District for 21 years.

The race will be a test between age and youth, between media savvy and networking.

Mega, who recently worked for Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. and State Rep. Kenyatta Johnson, has a gift for coalition-building, including some unlikely faces. At his campaign announcement Saturday, he packed Club Damani in Overbrook with 250 enthusiastic people.

So candidates beware, Cindy is beginning to move in that direction. Bass has scheduled a fundraiser for her political committee on Feb. 23 at Lou’s & Choos, 21th Street & Hunting Park Avenue. It’s a small-scale fundraiser, as her $20 ticket shows. The intent is not to raise big bucks, but to show a movement toward an elected seat by this community activist and political strategist.

She is currently an elected Democratic Committeewoman in the 22nd Ward , a member of the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee and three-time delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

She is the senior advisor on urban and domestic policy to seven-term Congressman Chaka Fattah. Prior to joining Fattah’s staff, Bass was special assistant to Congress-

So from a political view, it is easy to guess she is revving up for another go at the 8th City Council Dist. Last time out, she finished second in a crowded field to a tenuous, hard-fighting Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller.

She’ll probably get the endorsement of both of the city’s dailies, both of whom eloquently supported her editorially in that last race.

Bass is the founder and honorary board chair for The Northwest Fund, a non-profit organization with a mission to

build and maintain strong, safe communities in Northwest Philadelphia.

She holds membership in a host of nonprofits as well as political organizations.

A strong source for her on election day could be the Turnout Tuesday Coalition up of over 30 community based nonprofit groups participating in nonpartisan electoral activity in an effort to increase voter turnout. She just happens to be the chairperson.

Add to that her influence in East Mount Airy. Bass is a past president of East Mount Airy Neighbors (EMAN), one of the oldest organizations of its kind in the nation.

EMAN was created to fight racial blockbusting and promote Mt. Airy as a diverse community. Today, Mt. Airy serves as a model for integrated neighborhoods nationwide.

She knows how to campaign, having worked several national and local campaigns for other successful candidates.

However, Bishop is no slouch, either, when it comes to media.

The long-term incumbent hosted a self-titled gospel radio show, “The Louise Bishop Show,” on WDAS-AM for 49 years. Bishop has three related careers – radio, the ministry and politics. Her radio program was consistently one of the highest-rated programs at the station and was an institution in the Philadelphia media market.

She has used this forum to inform and unite people around social, civic and religious issues; to advocate for services for the poor, includ-

ing job search; and to bring the message of political leaders to the people. In 1978, she was called to the ministry and was ordained an evangelist by the Pennsylvania Baptist Association.

On Sundays, 6 a.m. to 12 noon, Bishop can be heard on WURD Radio 900, and weekdays from 5-6 a.m. As well as using her mastery of the radio microphone to engage audiences, and her work in Harrisburg, Bishop also serves as a minister. Her Sunday-morning show is popular among wouldbe political candidates who use her forum to promote their candidacy.

One Sunday morning in 1987, a blind man whose wife

had deserted him and their five young children (three still in diapers), called into Louise’s gospel program begging for help. She opened the microphone and asked the people of Philadelphia to respond.

Within five minutes the City’s managing director, as well as scores of people, answered the call. The power of that response led to the beginning of her third career as a legislator in Harrisburg.

In her legislative duties, Bishop is Majority Chair of the Children & Youth Committee. She also serves on a number of committees, including Aging & Older Adult Services; Health & Human Services; and Democratic Policy. She is the most-senior African American woman serving in the General Assembly, a former officer of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus and of the Philadelphia Delegation.

She will also have the backing of the Democratic City Committee and the ward leaders who make up her district.

Mega may not have the support he enjoyed earlier from IBEW Local 98 Business Mgr. John J. Dougherty, Jr., who had enlisted his support to get out the vote in last year’s General Election.

Penn Treaty Casino District Taking Funding Applications The Penn Treaty Special Services District - a nonprofit set up by two Fishtownbased groups to receive and distribute money from SugarHouse casino - is now accepting applications for grants.

The five-member board, which currently includes three Fishtown residents and two Northern Liberties residents, meets on the third Wednesday of each month, 6:30-9PM (starting tomorrow the 20th at Liberties Bar, 705 N. 2nd St.) and will hear from five applicants at each meeting.

The Genevieve Society, a bipartisan group of politically active women, held its first organizational meeting last week at the offices of one of the founders, Abbe Fletman, Esq., of Flaster Greenberg.

Launched in New York in December as part of Pennsylvania Society weekend at the Waldorf-Astoria the Genevieve Society founders and charter members agreed the mission of the Genevieve Society would include advocacy, education and mentoring women candidates.

Waters’ Community Service Awards Banquet A Major Success State Rep. Ronald G. Waters, pleased at the turnout for his 8th annual Community Service Awards Banquet at the Renaissance Philadelphia Airport Hotel, called the event a “Display of the true meaning of Community.”

by Len Lear Mike Jackson, owner of the well known Blue Sage Vegetarian Restaurant in Southampton, lower Bucks Co., will be opening a second restaurant for non-carnivores on Tuesday, Feb. 2, when he unveils Thoreau Vegetarian Grill at 1033 Spring Garden Street, just outside of the exploding Northern Liberties area.

The restaurant will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 4:30 to 10 p.m. and from 4:30 to 11 on Friday and Saturday evenings. Outside seating will be available, weather permitting, and chef Jackson will have his own vegetable and herb garden right outside his kitchen door. Lunch will follow soon, and a liquor license is pending. In the

meantime, customers may bring their own bottles and experience this intimate 35seat restaurant.

Jackson is a self-taught chef who estimates he has served “almost a half-million customers” during his more than 10 years at Blue Sage. He wants potential customers to know that “my produce purveyor has me on speed dial for the season’s first green zebra tomatoes, black mission figs and baby boo mini pumpkins. And my mysterious mushroom forager has carte blanche to drop off all the chanterelles and black trumpets at my back door he can find; and I become very sullen if my favorite brand of summer roll rice wrappers is nowhere to be found in Chinatown. PERZEL, TAYLOR, O’BRIEN and MURT. Those are the names of the three happiest Elephants in town. After the momentous Scott Brown victory in Massachusetts, it has been proven Republicans can win almost anywhere in this current antiObamacare atmosphere. These already-safe Elephants were made even safer by this win. If Republicans can win in liberal Massachusetts, then these incumbents are more than safe in moderate Northeast Philly.

Now the obvious has been stated, Trunk Man hopes to impart a message to one of those four men. Mr. Perzel: you have always put party before all else. It’s time you put party before pride. In light of your recent indictment and your extraordinary loss of power over the past several years, there is little doubt you are running for your last term. Please do us all a favor and step aside for the good of the Republican Party. This may be the only chance Elephants have to retain your seat in the event of your departure. Taylor, O’Brien and Murt will likely be in the legislature for the foreseeable future. The gentleman from the 172nd, however, is a different story. Your time is coming to an end. You have done so much good for the people of your District. You single-handedly allowed for the creation and survival of numerous nonprofits throughout the city.

Your office has helped countless seniors to afford prescription drugs and get heating in the winter. Your mark has been left on Mayfair in ways you cannot even imagine – so much that you will easily beat any opponent, even in light of your legal troubles. But on behalf of the future of this party, please go out on top. In your moderate District, a hardworking Republican would all but walk into your seat in 2010. We cannot foresee what will happen in another year or two, but if 1994 was any indication, we may only have a short period of time to win in these swing seats.

Deer season is over in Pennsylvania and grownups must wait until May to go after wild turkeys.

However, primary season has begun with a bang and for some folks, bagging elected offices is more fun.

From Will Mega’s announcement he’s going to take on State Rep. Louise Williams Bishop for the right to represent the 192nd Dist. at Club Damani Saturday to Joe Hoeffel’s announcement of his intent to run for Governor, an announcement that featuring the Lincoln University Band, the announcements are coming out fast and festive.

And that’s even without the official Lieutenant Governor announcements from former City Controller Jonathan Saidel, and former Common Pleas Court Judge Doris Smith-Ribner.

But while these announcements and announcements to come are going to make the 2010 races really interesting, two other bits of political election news made me sit up and take notice recently.

One was that Tom Knox, Millionaire (who probably does own a mansion and a yacht), decided to take his hat out of the gubernatorial ring.

Knox told reporters on Friday he was dropping out of the race and putting his support behind Allegheny Co.’s Dan Onorato for Governor. He gave the standard reasons for his decision, but we may never know why the only guy that could be his own Special Interest contributor decided to make his exit.

The second piece of news is State Sen. Anthony Williams, one of the folks listening in on that conference call, decided to kinda take the law into his own hands and announce he’d (Cont. Next Page)

Yo! Here we go again. While I was watching television one night, a Tweety Bird cartoon came on. You know the cute little yellow bird that says, “I tawt I taw a puddy-tat?” I wondered just how this character and classic phrase were created. So off to my trusty computer to look it up on the internet, and here is what I found.

Tweety Bird was created by Bob Clampett. His inspiration was newborn birds. He thought they were funny-looking, so his design was a chubby pink bird with an innocent stare at the camera that got the best of two cats named Babbit and Cat-stello – a spoof of the comedians Bud Abbot and Lou Costello.

The then-nameless bird’s opening line, “I tawt I taw a puddy-tat,” made the cartoon and the character a hit. Mel Blanc recorded the bird’s voice at normal speed and then it was played back faster. That was in the cartoon A Tale of Two Kitties in 1942.

Birdy and the Beast was Tweety’s next cartoon in 1944. It gave him a name and personality. In 1946 the movie censors decided the pink bird looked naked and insisted that he must wear pants. No way, said Clampett – he gave Tweety yellow feathers instead.

So where is the “puddy tat?” Fritz Freleng took over the cartoon and created the cat as a clown with a big red nose and a look like he was wearing baggy pants. He appeared in the 1945 cartoon Life with Feathers which was nominated for an Oscar. The cat appeared in two more cartoon – still nameless for two more cartoons.

It wasn’t until 1947 before Thomas the cat met Tweety Bird. In 1948, animator Ted Pierce changed Thomas the cat into Sylvester. He thought a slobbering cat needed a name that could be slobbered. He also made Tweety Bird a little friendlier. He made him look more like a charming little baby bird, with a bigger head and oversized blue eyes.

In their first cartoon, Tweety Pie, Thomas catches Tweety Bird, who is freezing in the winter cold. Thomas’s (Sylvester’s) owner saves Tweety and brings him home. Tweety Bird then proceeds to terrorize the cat and takes over the house – a great cartoon that earned the Warner Brothers an Academy Award. Tweety Bird and Sylvester made 55 more cartoons together.

And now we know how it came about. Did that bring back any good memories? It did for me.

TOM DARCY was the host of an intimate luncheon held at the Vesper Club. During the years when FRANK RIZZO was Mayor of Philadelphia, the Vesper Club was his favorite spot for dining and he usually enjoyed the company of friends. Hence, the table would go on reserve for this group. That’s how it acquired its name.

There are some excellent luncheon clubs in Center City. The Philadelphia Club is the most exclusive of the men’s clubs. The Union League of Philadelphia is probably the most popular. The Acorn Club is probably the most exclusive women’s club. The Racquet Club has many members from the Main Line and offers the most in the way of athletic facilities. The Down Town Club caters to many people employed by the banking and insurance industries.

The English are much more club-oriented than Americans. In fact, some of the James Bond scenes were shot in London men’s clubs. You could probably find among the Philadelphia clubs a sufficient number of members who could easily fit the James Bond role – MIKE McALLISTER of the Philadelphia Credit Union, or attorneys CHARLIE PERUTO and CHRISTINE BELOFF, who is rumored to have an interest in the life of a private eye.

Over the year, some really fine old clubs closed mainly because of many business people away from Center City for dining. Among these clubs there are the Rittenhouse Club; The Penn AC; The Midday Club; The Locust Club; and the Pen & Pencil Club.

The Vesper Club is primarily a luncheon club, although it does have an interesting dinner clientele. The food is always above standard and the staff prides itself by recognizing the members by names when they come into the club. One of the first clubs to close its doors was the Merchantile & Literary Association.

JERRY KANE, one of the great West Catholic HS football stars, departed this life after a long illness. There was a large turnout at his funeral. He is survived by his wife LOUISE. Citing the need to see Philadelphia and its issues addressed during the Race to the Governor’s Mansion, Williams told the Daily News of his intention to seek the Commonwealth’s highest office.

This is interesting for a few reasons.

One, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for an African American to get elected to statewide office. Remember: Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between.

Two, I don’t see the rest of the state allowing a Philadelphian to continue to run things in Harrisburg. They’re probably still amazed Ed Rendell didn’t get rid of the Farm Show during his two terms as Governor. Even Joe Hoeffel’s looking at a hard road because of that.

Thirdly, money is going

to be an issue. If everyone is thinking like Knox, getting folks to give money to anyone named Dan Onorato is going to be tough.

But with all that being said, this is going to be an interesting primary season.

Cancer Spread May Trouble Nuclear Biz (Cont. From Page 1) coming online in this region since the first wave of nuclear plants was built. The rate of this relatively rare disease is on the rise in the United States – but particularly so in Eastern Pennsylvania. A coalition of researchers and environmentalists says nuclear power may be the culprit.

That’s not clear. But it does create a new public-relations hurdle for the industry to leap.

Joseph Mangano, a South Jersey expert with the Radiation & Public Health Project, has published an article in the current International Journal of Health Studies showing Pennsylvania leads the nation in thyroid cancer, especially at its eastern end. Lehigh Co. (the Allentown area) has the highest rate in the USA: 21.4 per 100,000, or al-

most two and a half times the national rate. All other counties also show an elevated rate of this cancer. Philadelphia’s rate, 11.5, is 29% higher than the national average.

It wasn’t always so. For many years, Eastern Pennsylvania’s thyroid-cancer rate was well below the national average.

Starting around 1990, though, it began to climb. By 2000, our rate was 30% higher than the national rate and has stayed that way ever since.

Not much is known about the causes of this form of cancer. It is so rare that it hasn’t attracted much research. But radiation can definitely be one cause. Radioactive iodine, in particular, is a danger because that element makes a beeline for the thyroid gland, an almond-sized organ in the neck. Tiny traces of radioac-

tive iodine, among other chemicals, can occur in releases from a nuclear plant.

Nevertheless, it is impossible, at this point, to blame thyroid cancers on nuclear power.

For one thing, “tiny,” in this case, means “really tiny.” Joe Scopelliti, a spokesman for PPL’S Susquehanna nuclearpower plant, noted the overall background rate of radiation in his area is about 350 millirems (a millirem is a unit of radiation). “In the area immediately surrounding our facility, the amount of radiation that is traceable to its emissions is only .01 millirem,” he said. In other words, the plant increases total radiation in the environment by one-350,000th.

PPL maintains a research farm on its property. Ecologists regularly study its simple organisms which lie at the base of the food chain for signs of radioactive effluent.

“It seems unlikely that such a small effect could trigger a large increase in illness rates, Scopelliti said.

“People should not be quick

to jump to conclusions.”

Radon gas occurring naturally in the soil is a problem for many parts of Eastern Pennsylvania. It is a known radioactive health hazard. Scopelliti, who lives one mile from his power plant, has installed a passive radon vent in his basement. “If there is a regional pattern that might be caused by radioactivity, I would first look to radon,” he said.

In any event, it isn’t a power company’s job to research the causes of cancer. It is an intensely regulated industry, and complying with numerous government standards is the main mission of a plant operator. The US government does not currently recognize any health threat from any or all of the reactors in our region.

Cancer was one of the first dangers found to be caused by radioactivity. Many scientists have spent much time looking for correlations between nuclear-power plants and cancer, and failed. Most recently, the National Academy of Sciences concluded in 2005 that the health

risk from low levels of ionizing radiation is small.

However, it is unlikely the earth suddenly began to emit more radon shortly before 1990.

Most of the region’s power plants, by contrast, went into operation between 1973 and 1989.

But the use of medical radiation has also exploded since the 1970s. It has become ever more widely used as a treatment for cancer. CAT scanning, which was being developed as the first nuclear power plants were being built, also emits radiation; in 2007, 70 million CAT procedures were carried out in the USA. Some observers suggest the concentration of advanced medicine in Eastern Pennsylvania may have dramatically increased exposure of its population to radiation in recent years. It’s an alternative explanation for the increase in thyroid cancer.

Others contend an increase in the thyroid-cancer rate may be caused by better diagnosis. By this reasoning, physicians may simply have become better at finding it, thereby driving its

But Mangano said he is unaware of any focus on improved diagnosis of this form of cancer in particular. From 1980 to 2006, the incidence of thyroid cancer across the USA went up by 154%. During the same period, breast cancer, which was receiving enormous popular attention and a vast influx of research, increased by only 20%, he pointed out.

Nobody really knows. And even at current rates, this is still an uncommon cancer – onetenth as common as female invasive breast cancer, for instance. It tends to strike late in life. It is easily treated and highly survivable.

Still, that is no comfort to those who get it. Suzanne Litzenberger, who lives in the Lehigh Valley, was diagnosed with the disease in 2004, when she was only 24. Today, she is a member of a survivor-support group stimulated by the sobering discovery they are living in a disease hotspot.

“We often discuss the possible sources of our cancer,” she said. “Nuclear-power plants have often come up in our conversations as well as other environmental factors. It would put our minds at ease to know why this happened and discover possible ways to prevent it in the future.”
