What Have You Given Up Ron Panepinto For The 46 Days Of Lent? Jewelers

LOCALS JOHN FERLAINO and Quinton Bosman will make sacrifices for Lent, but not their Termini’s Bakery.

ANTHONY VOLPE hasn’t decided what to give up for Lent yet, but it won’t be his favorite Termini’s pastries.

by Rory McGlasson Most Christians give up something - usually the sweet stuff - for over 40 days during Lent. Just don’t ask regulars at Termini’s Bakery, such as Anthony Volpe, to give up their pastries. Volpe visits Termini’s Bakery religiously, each and every day, no matter how much snow falls from the heavens. “I am not giving up the sweets, no way,” Volpe said. “I like my Termini’s too much. I don’t know what I’m going to give up this year, but it won’t be my Termini. I walked here three blocks for these

on the ice and in the snow.” Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, is the last day of feasting before Lent began on Wednesday. “I’ll work hard on giving up the drinking, but not the sweets. I like the cookies too much,” said Quinton Bosman. Phyllis Spina has been working at Termini’s Bakery for 30 years. She knows the customers better than anyone. And, few, she says, give up her stores’ pastries. “We get a few people doubling their orders on Fat Tuesday, but we (Cont. Page 18)

Back On The Beat New Police Captain To ‘Weave’ A Little Magic In The 3rd

Pets Provide Positive Change For Seniors

by Rory G. McGlasson There’s a new police captain in town, and he’s planning to weave a little magic in the new 3rd Police District. Capt. Michael Weaver is the new captain at 11th and Wharton Streets. If Weaver’s name is familiar to many South Philadelphians, it’s because back in 1998, he was the 3rd Dist. Captain for a decade from 1998 to 2008. There were two captains leading the 3rd and 4th Districts then; now the district has been consolidated in to: one United district; one captain.

There’s no doubt pets bring smiles to the face of their owners. For seniors, a furry friend can provides a positive impact on their quality of life. That’s why a non profit group will host a forum tonight in an attempt to link the city’s homeless animals with seniors. Generation Appreciation Philadelphia (GenPhilly), with support from Philadelphia Senior Center (PSC), will present “Golden (Cont. Page 2)

And, with some fire in his belly, Weaver is raring to get started. Capt. Weaver said he wants to reignite the “old-school beat” mentality; one where the local beat-cop knows their beat, and the people of the beat know their cop.

CAPTAIN MICHAEL WEAVER will lead the newly merged 3rd police district at 11th and Wharton Street.

“I’m thrilled to be back,” Weaver said in his 11th and Wharton Street office. “And I’m excited about some of the new exciting programs we have in the works in the new District.” Early next month, the two Districts will officially become one, and the Third District will be a major part of Police Commissioner Chuck Ramsey’s Police Service Areas (PSA). “The PSA program will make the force stronger, and ultimately put more police on the street at the cause,” Weaver said. When the district officially merges, there will only be one administrative staff handling both districts. “It’s what needs to be done to put our officers on the streets where they need to be,” Weaver said. “Instead of chasing our tails from one part of the District to the other, we can assign our officers to an area to work to get to know the people, and their police officer.” (Cont. Dintino, who has resigned from his post as a member of the Bureau of Revision of Taxes to accept the challenge, indicated he would also not seek the renewal of a contract he now has with the Philadelphia Parking Authority, which is expected to end in June. Attorney Vito Canuso, chairman of the Republican City Committee, welcomed Dintino’s acceptance of the position, saying, “We believe we have the right man for the job now (Cont. Page 2)
