Patricia Wells said she will walk from her home on the 2200 block of Tasker Street to City Hall, the grocery store and the local YMCA to do “whatever it takes” so that next year she wins gold. Fundraisers were held last weekend in South Philadelphia and the suburbs in a last-gasp effort to raise the $80,000 needed to pay the City expenses for this Sunday’s Irish Parade. - Chavanne City War Vets Founder Dies
George Chavanne, loved by many, especially those who worked beside him in Clerk of Quarters Sessions and Family Court, died this week. With an honorable discharge as a Sergeant in the US Air Force in Europe during World War II, Chavanne’s name became synonymous with caring for veterans. He spent almost four decades in City Government.During that time he assumed the mantle of leadership, serving as Commander for the Municipal War Veterans, made up of City employees who were veterans. He was a major promoter of the Multi Service Veterans Center. He held the title of commander for various posts and organizations, including USS Olympia. Chavanne was everywhere helping veterans and his community. George served as chairman of the Board of the Veteran Boxers Association and was a Mummer in good standing for 59 years, serving for 25 of those years as a member of the Purul Comic Club. He held a host of other titles, many of them honorary because of his pro-bono (Cont. Page 2)
