Memorial Day:
FOP Honors Rep. Keller
More Than Simply A ‘Halladay’ Weekend by Maria Merlino Hundreds of South Philadelphians were packing for the shore last weekend excited about the unofficial start of the summer, Our Philadelphia Flyers, and Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay’s perfect game last week. Hundreds of well-respected media outlets used the “Great start to the ‘Halladay’ weekend” headline … very cute. However, is Memorial Day a day when the Shore kicks into high gear, when the beach is covered in people white as a hospital sheet, basting themselves in coconut oil? Is it a time for baseball alone? Or is it when a grateful nation pauses to quietly thank the more than one million men and women who (Cont. Page 7)

PHILADELPHIA Lodge 5 Fraternal Order Of Police recognizes State Rep. Bill Keller for his efforts to ensure collective-bargaining rights of Philadelphia municipal workers and workers across the state in HB 1828, now Act 44 of 2009. This law authorized Philadelphia to increase its sales tax by one penny for five years and direct those proceeds to municipal pension funds, thereby freeing up money now being spent out of City’s General Fund. Keller fought to ensure collective-bargaining rights of police and others would not be undermined.

The dream of many Philadelphians who drive by the Delaware River has been to walk its shoreline. That has been possible along a few stretches of the river at Penn Treaty Park, Tinicum Launching Ramp and Park, and Riverview Park in front of the Philadelphia Prisons. Last week, more of the river has opened up to those wishing to walk along the river’s edge. Mayor Michael Nutter has dedicated the Delaware River Trail, a mixed-use recreational path that will help Philadelphians reconnect with their Delaware River waterfront. Winding from the Pier 70 shopping center to Washington Avenue, the trail’s completion is the first phase in a plan that will extend it north and ultimately to connect to the trail being built along north Delaware. The trail creates a safe alternative (Cont. Page 2)
Keller Works Hard To Save Tech School The current financial crisis in the State has caused Gov. Ed Rendell to propose to significantly reduce funding for the Thaddeus Stevens School of Technology. Officials from the school testified before State Rep. Bill Keller and the Appropriations Committee during budget hearings. Keller believes the school provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn a trade and encourages students in the 184th Dist. to call his office at (215) 2719190 if they are interested in learning more about it.
