Restayrateur Falls In Love With South Philly, Opens Seafood Bar (Cont. From Page 1) No longer will we have to trek down I-95 South to get to a good Chesapeake Bay crab house, the kind of restaurant that serves Maryland-style hard-shell crabs with papercovered tables heaped with trays of bright orange crabs and pitchers of ice-cold beer.

Thanks to Jolly Weldon’s love affair with a gal from South Philly and South Philly itself, his new restaurant will be ‘crab-ified’ in December when the former Mio Sogno at 15th & Oregon Avenue is transformed into Jolly’s Crab House.

It was his attraction for Judy Taraborrelli, a stylist from Gio-

vanni and Pelleggi, who married Weldon eight years ago, that relocated him to South Philly from Maryland.

“We were some of his first customers and also the last ones to leave!” said Taraborrelli.

“Everyone just loves Jolly. I lived here my whole life but when we walk down the street, it’s ‘Hey Jolly’!”

Weldon, who has the popular Center City Jolly’s Dueling Piano Bar, is mixing his Maryland heritage with the culture of this area to open Jolly’s Crab House.

“There are so many great little restaurants here,” said Weldon. “But there is no real Maryland type of crab house.

“We will be changing the décor and lightening up the place, putting in booths and bigger tables. The place is in good shape and there are architectural elements that we’ll keep.”

The new chef’s name is top secret for now, but he is from South Philly and has been an executive chef at a few restaurants.

“He will add lots of local flavor to the menu, including the very Italian macaroni with crab gravy and shrimp parmesan. Maryland crabs will be the focus point of the menu and we will have a two-hour all-youcan-eat crab special. The clock starts ticking when you get

here, so if you arrive at 5:30, you can eat until 7:30 and it will include soup, salad, crabs and corn.”

Weldon also promises the crabs will be priced daily but the entrees will be less than $20 and the bar menu less than $10.

The drink sizes will be generous because, he said, “I like big drinks!” You can order from the eight beers on tap, pints or pitchers and a full range of bottled beer. A wine list has three categories: cheap, medium and good. “We’re telling everyone

You will be able to choose between appetizers, sandwiches, sliders, crab cakes, crab dips and wraps. There will also be steamer pots with an assortment of seafood, shellfish and corn.

Weldon emphasizes his main focus is crabs, but there will be enough on the menu to keep anyone interested, including meat eaters. For those allergic to wheat, not to worry: Glutenfree items are available including pastas, beer and vodka.

Republican Pat Toomey still stands just short of 50% against Democrat Joe Sestak in Pennsylvania’s US Senate race according to the latest Rasmussen Report. Its telephone survey shows Toomey with 49% support to Sestak’s 40% when leaners are included. Four percent favor another candidate in the race, and 7% are undecided.

With the numbers little changed from two weeks ago when Toomey holds a 49% to 41% lead, the race remains Leans GOP in the Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 Senate Balance of Power rankings.

In surveys since early February, Toomey’s support has ranged from 42% to 49%. Except for a brief surge following his mid-May primary victory over incumbent Senator Arlen Specter,

“We define likely voters as registered voters who report they have an excellent or good chance of voting in November and express a high to moderate degree of interest in the elections,” said Lee M. Board Does Its Job After reading a recent Daily News article demanding the PHA board be changed because of the reported acts of Carl Greene, I find it amazing they would take this kind of approach, especially since not one person, not even the Daily News, was complaining when Carl Greene was receiving awards

for the housing policies.

The current PHA board appears to be taking swift and appropriate action with the current issues, by firing Carl Greene, looking for an interim director with housing knowledge, and investigate the contracts and different deals that have the smell of illegality.

After thinking of boards that need to be disbanded, the first should be the Daily News editorial board.

This is just a clear example of the crabs-in-a-barrel mentality.

I would like to publicly thank Rick Hellberg, Matt Wolfe, Mike Cibik, Rhashea Harmon, Adam Lang, Joe DeFelice and Jerry Brown for joining me in Chinatown this past Sunday to celebrate an important community event, but also to take the time to meet with and listen to concerns of both the Chinese and Vietnamese community.

Those Asians attending yesterday’s event included business leaders, community leaders and ordinary citizens from both Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania suburbs.

Our Republican leaders listened to concerns about difficult business environments and policies that stifle business development for small business owners. They listened to stories about crime being directed against Asian students, businesses and individuals both in the city and suburbs. They listened to concerns about Philadelphia’s woeful infrastructure and of paying many taxes and getting very few services in return.

On a day when most Philadel-

phians were rightfully interested in how Kevin Kolb was going to do at quarterback, these leaders were interested in helping a community long overlooked by past and present leaders of both Philadelphia political parties. As one Asian community leader mentioned to me yesterday, he is used to seeing politicians come to Chinatown to ask for money not to listen to community concerns. I too echo the sentiment of this leader. I should also note that these leaders have been in the Chinatown community for two years, helping community members, and have promised to return often in the future.

To us, here at the Public Record, Columbus Day means tasty Italian sandwiches, dishes and desserts which draw us to Marconi Plaza at the end of the more than half-century-old Columbus Day Parade.

To us, it means meeting with venerable Italians, many who came over in the early ’20s, and still speak English with an Italian accent, and getting a chance to relive with them their first days in America.

To us, it means we get a chance to hobnob with the city’s Italian political, civic, and social leadership as well as mingle with those office-holders who jostle to make sure they are in the front lines of the parade.

To us, it is a celebration of the melting pot and an excellent example of how this country has managed to meld the ethnic groups in this country into a seamless match, all coming out as patriotic Americans in the end.

We take this time to also salute all the Polish Americans who came out to march in the annual Pulaski Day Parade and who watched it on television. Their fellow Americans with Italian roots will have their turn on the street and on the screen this Columbus Day.

Co-Founder Severino Verna To Be Honored At Columbus Day Parade Philadelphia City Council President Anna C. Verna and Pete Ciarrocchi, president of the 1492 Society, Inc. are proud to announce the 2010 Philadelphia Columbus Day Parade will be held this Sunday, Oct. 10.

The Columbus Day Parade tradition will honor Cavalier Severino Verna who co- founded the Parade in Philadelphia in 1957. Verna was the late husband of President Verna. Also honored will be the contributions and the culture of Philadelphia’s Italian American Community.

In announcing this year’s parade, President Verna stated, “I am delighted to continue with this wonderful tradition and I am pleased that the community has come together to make this year’s

parade a reality.”

Philadelphia business leader Pete Ciarrocchi, who previously led the Columbus Day Committee of Philadelphia and was instrumental in forming and incorporating the 1492 Society, Inc. earlier this year, said, “Last year it was an embarrassment when the parade was cancelled. I was determined that the Columbus Day Parade would happen this year and in future years.”

was founded last March by a group of concerned community, civic and fraternal leaders to ensure the celebration of Christopher Columbus in Philadelphia for generations to come.

The Grand Marshal of this year’s parade is South Philadelphia native and legendary personality Jerry Blavat. Entering his fifth decade in the entertainment industry, Jerry Blavat long ago transcended the medium of radio. Describing Jerry

as a “radio DJ” is like describing Abraham Lincoln as a politician from Illinois. He’s a true cultural icon in Philadelphia.

In addition to the active participation of the Italian and Italian American organizations, the Columbus Day parade highlights Mummers string bands and brigades, outstanding high school and elementary school marching bands, and many other

organizations representing the various ethnic traditions of our great city.

This year, the 1492 Society, Inc. is proud to host the Marine Forces Reserve Band from New Orleans, La. The parade will kick off at Broad & Morris Streets in South Philadelphia at 12:30 p.m. and will be televised live by WPVI-Channel 6 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Pardon my absence. I just got back from three weeks in Thailand visiting my cousin there, the Royal Elephant. Fortunately, aside from our chairman being booted out and then immediately reinstated, there was relative harmony among my fellow pachyderms while I was sucking up Mai Tais with Cuz at Phuket. Last week, City Council At-Large candidate ELMER MONEY hosted a fundraiser at SmokeEaters Pub in Northeast Philadelphia. Present was former Lieutenant Governor candidate STEVE JOHNSON from York, Pa. as well as former Congressional candidate DAMIEN DACHOWSKI. Also in attendance were ward leaders MATT WOLFE, MIKE CIBIK and JERRY BROWN. Former WARD LEADER PHIL INNAMORATO stopped by along with former Congressional candidate ADAM LANG. State GOP staffer JOE DeFELICE also made a brief appearance.

Trunk Man keeps hearing buzz about who else besides Money will make an at-Large go of it. One name once prominently rumored has apparently dropped into the “not running” column. Former STATE REP. GEORGE KENNEY says he won’t try it, due to pressure at work. This leaves STATE REP. DENNY O’BRIEN as the only prominent Republican running from the Northeast. Minor Northeast candidates are Money, former Congressional standard-bearer JOE McCOLGAN and loyal long-distance runner AL TAUBENBERGER. This, of course, is assuming DROP member Jack Kelly does not run for reelection.

The candidate who is likely to be the most serious contender to whoever emerges from the Northeast, DAVID OH, was also the topic of much conversation. He recently hosted a fundraiser with Democrats Councilwoman MARIA (Cont. Page 30)

Yo! Here we go again with this memory of Iron Eyes Cody.

He was most famous for his “crying Indian” role in the “Keep America Beautiful” Public Service Announcement in the early 1970s. It was a one-minute ecology production in which an Indian (Cody) sheds a tear after some trash is thrown from a speeding car and lands at his feet. In this commercial, the announcer, William Conrad, of Bullwinkle and Cannon fame, memorably declares: “People start pollution; people can stop it.”

Iron Eyes Cody (Apr. 3, 1904 – Jan. 4, 1999) was an American actor. Cody was born as Espera Oscar de Corti in Kaplan, La. He was recognized for portraying Native Americans in Hollywood films. Cody began his acting career at 12 and worked until the time of his death. He appeared in more than 200 films, including The Big Trail (1930), with John Wayne; Sitting Bull (1954), as Crazy Horse; Nevada Smith (1966), with Steve McQueen; A Man Called Horse (1970), with Richard Harris; and Ernest Goes to Camp (1987), with Jim Varney. In 1953, he appeared twice as Chief Big Cloud in Duncan Renaldo’s television series “The Cisco Kid”. In 1995, he was honored by the Native American community for his portrayals.

In some of his earliest acting credits, Cody was listed as Tony de Corti. He later changed his name to Tony Cody. Cody married Bertha “Birdie” Parker, a woman of aboriginal descent.

The Joni Mitchell song “Lakota,” from the 1988 album Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm, features Cody’s chanting. He made a cameo appearance in the 1990 film Spirit of ’76.

He lived all his adult life claiming he was Native American and supported related causes. Cody and his wife Bertha, who was, in fact, a Native American, adopted several chil(Cont. Page 30)

There’s been a whole lot made about a so-called “enthusiasm gap” between Democrats and Republicans as this year’s Midterm Elections approach.

The Punditocracy has been working overtime putting together poll after poll, filled with information they say bears this phenomenon out. According to the polls, the generic Republican is going to spank the generic Democrat no matter what.

In fact, anyone not named Rachel Maddow is saying Democrats are going to lose both the House and the Senate and that the Obama Administration is about to get hit by the same “Contract on America” wave that hit the Clinton Administration.

But what I’ve found most interesting about the polls I’ve seen from my Punditocrat pals is the information they provide on African American voters. According to the pollsters, Black folks are going to sit this one out.

That’s because, at least according to the polls, Black folks are a little annoyed with the nation’s First Black President.

They say that Barack Obama hasn’t done enough to deal with the issues that adversely impact Black America most, such as jobs, health care and the Corrections Industrial Complex.

They’re not seeing enough change to go to the polls and have it continue, according to the polls.

(Granted, the Economic Stimulus program, Health Care Reform legislation, and a recently signed law that equalizes the sentences between crack cocaine distribution and its powdered parent may not mean much to those seeking something more pie in the sky, but it’s more of a start than we’ve had in the past.)

Political pundits and pollsters alike are suddenly backpedaling regarding the November General Election results ... you heard it here first, folks! Just remember that! Take a look at all of the races that were expected to be taken by the GOP; you suddenly see the numbers tightening up and the expected feast by Republicans turning into a tapas small plate instead. The numbers are getting quite close in most cases, and so the questionable shift in seats has everyone in Philadelphia wondering the only concern that matters to many: will there be a Democratic majority to help usher in CONGRESSMAN CHAKA FATTAH to the chairman’s seat of the Appropriations Committee? Fattah has been more visible as of late, and everyone has noticed. Even former detractors seem to have buried the hatchet. It’s the old saying in politics; there are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests!

The ugly fight between former MAYOR JOHN STREET and MICHAEL NUTTER has the life of an Energizer bunny; it goes on and on, much to our dismay. Street is obviously unloading years of anger and frustration, and Nutter’s comments about Street in a recent article in the Philadelphia Tribune make you wonder aloud about his political smarts. The Trib speaks to Street’s base; complaining (and even somewhat implying) Street purposely looks the other way when corruption occurs could end up being litigious, and even more damaging to Nutter among African American voters. Think, Mr. Mayor! You’re not winning friends by your actions, and you have much more to lose than John Street.

If you are waiting for the gubernatorial campaign to heat up, apparently now is the hottest it’s going to get. TOM CORBETT’S TV commercials are following the tried-andtrue method of running against someone other than your opponent. In this case, his opponent is DAN ONORATO but he his campaigning against ED RENDELL. RICHARD THORNBURGH used this strategy very effectively against his opponent PETE FLAHERTY by campaigning instead against then-GOV. MILTON SHAPP. The irony in the Shapp case is the test of time has indicated he had a very productive two terms as Governor. In an enterprise as big as Pennsylvania’s State government over the course of eight years, there are bound to be failures of human nature, mistakes in judgment, incompetence and criminal behavior as would take place in any multi-billion dollar enterprise, like the State budget. Of course, Onorato has the million-Democrat voter-registration edge, which may be enough to see him through to victory. The truth will be known on the first Tuesday, following the first Monday of November of this year.

It’s official! Philadelphia’s renowned Columbus Day Parade and Italian Festival will take place Oct. 10 with an estimated 5,000 marchers including eight string bands, two service bands and several high-school bands.

This time, however, the

parade route is shorter.

Marchers will gather at Broad & Morris, beginning from Broad & Morris in South Philadelphia to Marconi Plaza, at Broad & Oregon. The parade will conclude at Bigler Street just after passing by the reviewing stand. The parade will be telecast on Channel 6 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

The festivities will continue with the Columbus Day Festival on the west grounds of Marconi Plaza during the parade and will

continue to 6 p.m.

Grand Marshall of this year’s parade will be Jerry Blavat, well known radio disc jockey.

Coordinating this year’s parade is the 1492 Society, a newly formed nonprofit which has replaced the nowdefunct Columbus Day Committee, founded over 50-plus years ago by the late Commendatore Severino Verna, the husband of Council President Anna Verna.

Hon. Amato Berardi, who represents Italian Americans as their member in the Italian Parliament, escorted Order Sons of Italy delegation to Italy where the group donated $235,000 to rebuild the “Il Cireneo Foundation” center. Benefiting will be the children of L'Aquila.

The delegation included Joseph Di Trapani, President of the Sons of Italy Foundation; Vincent Sarno, national director, and Phil R. Piccigallo and Mike Rienzi, president of Rienzi Food USA. The contribution was collected from the Italian American members of the foundation who live in the United States.

Present at this event were the President of the Regional Council Hon. Nazario Pagano, Councillor of the Municipality of L'Aquila Stefania Pezopane, and other prominent institutions representatives, including Dr. Alma Laias, head of international affairs, and Carmine Berardi representing Hon. Amato Berardi, who greeted those present and thanked the OSIA for their generosity and participation on his behalf.

“We are all happy,” says Berardi, “that finally L’Aquila will have a new center for autism, thanks to 'commitment to various realities such as the Sons of Italy Foundation, the Chamber of Deputies Runner Club, the foundation Ronald McDonald Italy, the Governments of Canada and Quebec, and many generous people who wanted to ensure a peaceful future for these children.”

When the devastating earthquake struck the Abruzzo region, destroying much of the town of L’Aquila and the smaller towns around it, Italians, particularly from the United States, raised the money.

Other donors to date include Pete Ciarrocchi, restaurant owner, $5,000; Jay Agnes, of P. Agnes Builders, $5.000; Defense Realty, $5,000; State Sen. Larry Farnese, $5,000 through a State grant; Grand Lodge of Sons of Italy, $5,000; Philadelphia Federal Credit Union, $2500; UNICO, $500 with Verna adding another $4,000 from Council.

This will be her last parade, she said, as she heads into a religious vocation.

He asked Gerry Lenfest for help. The humanitarian put enough money into a fund from which the parade committees can draw to pay for the City expense generated by the use of police, fire, and sanitation services. This lowered the cost for this parade and all the others.”

Leading the list of donors who have contributed to the $50,000 needed for this year’s Columbus Day parade is Verna, who donated $10,000 in honor of her husband, Sevy Verna. He had been the parade’s marshal from its first celebration until his death two years ago.

Many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, specifically the Bahamas, which occurred on Oct. 12, 1492, in the Julian calendar and Oct. 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar, as an of-

The day is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza in many countries in the Amer-

icas, as Día de las Culturas (Day of the Cultures) in Costa Rica, as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta

Nacional in Spain and as Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Uruguay.

These holidays have been celebrated unofficially since the late 18th century, and officially in various countries since the early 20th century.

Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and became a Federal holiday in 1934. However, people have celebrated Columbus' voyage since the colonial period.

In 1792, New York City and other US cities celebrated the

In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison called upon the people of the United States to celebrate Columbus Day on the 400th anniversary of the event.

During the 400th anniversary, in 1892, teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These patriotic rituals were framed around themes such as support for war, citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress.

Catholic immigration in the mid-19th century induced discrimination from anti-immigrant activists such as the Ku Klux Klan. Like many other struggling immigrant communities, Catholics developed organizations to

fight discrimination and provide insurance for the struggling immigrants. One such organization, the Knights of Columbus, chose that name in part because it saw Christopher Columbus as a fitting symbol of Catholic immigrants' right to citizenship: one of their own, a fellow Catholic, had discovered America.

Some Italian-Americans observe Columbus Day as a celebration of their heritage, the first occasion being in New York City on Oct. 12, 1866. Columbus Day was first popularized as a holiday in the United States through the lobbying of Angelo Noce, a first-generation Italian, in Denver. The first official, regular Columbus Day holiday was proclaimed by Colorado governor Jesse F. McDonald in 1905 and made a statutory holiday in 1907.

The First Step books detail specific nutritional supplements and amounts used, teach someone how to help a person who is withdrawing to stay extroverted, and how to alleviate mental and physical discomforts of withdrawal.

Tools for increasing communication skills are included.

COUNCIL President Anna Verna not happy over City Solicitor’s response. staffing shortfalls, leading to more-efficient ways to provide necessary services. It, at the same time, provides incentive for current employees to retire leaving positions open for consolidation. When their positions are filled, they are filled with less-expensive individuals who start with lower salaries and lesser pension packages.

Verna had queried the Solicitor to answer several questions. Do current City Employees have a constitutionally protected right to the continuation of the DROP Program? If so, which category of City employee has such a right?

She wanted specific answers concerning the status of City employees currently enrolled in DROP, those who have met all DROP eligibility requirements, but who are not yet enrolled in DROP; those who are “vested” in the City’s pension system, but are not yet eligible for DROP; and those who are not yet vested.

Verna also wanted to know if the City could unilaterally repeal DROP with respect to employees represented by a union or was this an issue that must be bargained with the unions? If bargaining was involved, what process must the City undertake with each of the unions before it may replace

the DROP with respect to represented employees?

Her letter was sent Aug. 3 and it wasn’t until Oct. 1 the answer was sent by the City Solicitor, who claimed her staff spent that time providing what she considered were detailed answers.

The question the Solicitor did make clear was some jobs could not be DROPped, others might be, depending on interpretation and court challenges.

Here, the Solicitor added, there was no language in union-City contracts discussing DROP. There are some court cases which said DROP was part of the bargaining process.

The solicitor did say, “Any employee who has reached his or her plan’s normal retirement age and has at least 10 years of service is eligible to participate and can enter the program. Upon entry, which is irrevocable, the employee ceases to pay pension contributions or accrue benefits.”

“The employee may continue to work for the City for a maximum of four years.

During that time, his monthly pension benefit is credited to a tax-deferred, interest-bearing account. The Board of Pensions & Retirement determines the interest rate, subject to a minimum of 4.5%, the rate payable since the inception of the program. On eventual retirement, the balance in the account is paid to the employee as a lump sum.”

Unfortunately, nowhere in the Solicitor’s response was a clear path drawn for City Council to follow. Left in that quandary, City Council needs to search out which of its actions would best avoid court challenges.

The Boston survey calling for the DROP’s demise has been acknowledged as flawed by media reports, and in statements by Council Members and the Board of the City’s Pension Fund.

Even the City Solicitor seems to be confused by the highly controversial DROP Program which now has the City Unions drawing a line in the sand. It is one provision they don’t plan to give up.

City Council, in an attempt to decide if the Administration order to do away with DROP was doable and legal, has asked City Solicitor Shelley Smith to make the determination, since it is this office which decides whether City Council legislation is constitutional or not.

It took two months for Smith to answer, a delay which has justifiably ticked off Council President Anna C. Verna, for not only its lateness, but for labeling the letter as one “that doesn’t have an answer.”

Absent a clear ruling from the Solicitor, City Council remains in a quandary as to what facets of the DROP program it can legislate out of existence, since the DROP program can affect City employees in different ways depending on their status.

Verna stated in response to the City Solicitor’s detailed response, “It provides far less guidance than any opinion I can recall. Merely saying that removing DROP participation for most employees ‘could’ be constitutional is of no help at all.

How likely is that to be the case? Is it probable? Is it possible? Is it unlikely, but possible? We have no idea.”

Though she said she was disappointed with the City Solicitor’s opinion, Verna added, “My colleagues and I will continue to aggressively pursue our independent review and public hearing” concerning the validity of the DROP Program and whether or not the City can end it for all employees.

The DROP Program, despite its critics, can have a positive effect on the City’s financial future. The program allows City Dept. heads ample time to prepare for

Tartaglione Lauds Workplace Bill Walking The Walk A bill that will protect workers, employers and all taxpayers from phony business arrangements easily passed the Senate Labor & Industry Committee was praised by State Sen. Christine M. Tartaglione.

“Both workers and employers who do their jobs honestly and pay their share of insurance, taxes and other benefits will see more protection from unscrupulous contractors and companies,” Tartaglione said. “It’s a fulltime job keeping up with those who try to skirt the law to save money and gain a competitive advantage.”

The Workplace Fraud Act (HB 400) sets standards and provides penalties for misclassification of a company’s employees as “inde-

pendent contractors” in order to save money on fair wages, workers compensation costs and other State work rules.

The measure passed the Labor & Industry Committee by an 8-2 vote. An intentional violation could bring criminal penalties.

“In these tough times, it’s time to get tough with anyone who tries to exploit workers and flout the law to get an advantage,” Tartaglione said. “Honest and reputable companies should not have to suffer for the dubious activities of others.”

Under the legislation, independent contractors must at least be free from control and direction for such services; customarily perform

such services in an independently established business or profession; maintain a separate business office (at least in the home); operate under written contracts that include the work, payment, and prohibit the independent contractor from retain anyone other than employees or other independent contractors that meet these criteria to complete work; and file Federal income taxes as an independent contractor.

Garces opening 7th restaurant next week

by Len Lear Next week Chef Jose Garces will open his seventh Philadelphia venture, JG Domestic, at 2929 Arch Street (215-222-2363), a restaurant and bar serving food and drink, all sourced from the US. JG Domestic is located in the Cira Centre, adjacent to the 30th Street Train Station, which previously housed chef Daniel Stern’s glitzy restaurant, Rae. (A spokesman for Garces told me the restaurant will open to the public next week, but she was not sure which day.)

The restaurant will feature a “living wall” of herbs, plants and greenery that reflects the chef’s mission: serving domestic products in an eye-catching setting. For

Americanborn chef Garces, often perceived as a purely Latin chef, JG Domestic is his effort to prove that he is more than just an “ethnic chef.”

“My cooking has always been focused on top notch ingredients, and this is my personal homage to those ingredients that are produced right here in the US,” said Garces, one of Food Network’s Iron Chefs and owner of six other Philadelphia restaurants — Amada, Tinto, Distrito, Chifa, Village Whiskey and Garces Trading Company.

“I want JG Domestic to be a must for anyone who lives in the Philadelphia area and for out-of-town visitors, too.

It may be a little too lofty, but my plan is to have it become the kind of place that people go out of their way to visit and enjoy.”

Chef Garces is working alongside chef de cuisine Dave Conn to present a menu that will change daily. In addition, Garces recently purchased a 40-acre Bucks Co. farm that will provide much of the produce for JG Domestic, following an extensive renovation of the on-site farmhouse and re-planting of the grounds.

The 175-seat restaurant’s menu will include snacks, cold and warm plates, vegetables and meat and fish dishes such as Heirloom Crimson Popcorn with Cheddar and Horseradish — red popcorn kernels from California’s Rancho Gordo, seasoned with sea salt, Jasper Hill Vermont cheddar cheese and fresh horseradish; Farm 51 Autumn Shirred Eggs — eggs from an urban farm in West Philadelphia with truffle-celery root cream, Benton’s bacon, Washington State lobster mushrooms and Oregon black truffle; and Atlantic Big Eye

Tuna, caught off the coast of Massachusetts, with California baby artichokes, Lola Rosa lettuce, marinated kumquats and creamy mustard vinaigrette.

Information on sourcing will be documented on the menu, whose items will range in price from $5 to $28.

Guests may also choose a five-course Chef’s Tasting Menu ($65).

A total of 20 beers (14 bottles and six drafts), 17 wines by the glass and 60 wines by the bottle will be offered, all from the US. Beers will range in price from $5 to $12 and wines from $9 to $13 per glass. All eight specialty cocktails are named for historic Amtrak routes as a tribute to the adjacent 30th Street Station, and will range in price from $12 to $15.

JG Domestic was designed by chef Garces’ longtime collaborator, Jun Aizaki, of New York-based Crème Design Collective, who has added

Custom cabinets will display salvaged Americana, while a large blackboard adorned with a “driving tour” map from Michigan to Philadelphia and New York will mark the origins of various menu items currently being used in the kitchen. The “Chef’s Nook” dining room, with seating for up to 12

guests, will include views of chefs Garces, Conn and their team at work in the open kitchen.

Since opening his first restaurant, Amada, in 2005, chef Garces has opened seven additional restaurants in both Philadelphia and Chicago; authored a cookbook, Latin Evolution (Lake Isle Press, September 2008); won the James Beard Foundation’s “Best Chef Mid-Atlantic” award in 2009; and won the most recent season of The Next Iron Chef, making him one of six chefs in the country to hold the title of Iron Chef America.

which, in essence, keep our unions out of work. Then, of course, unions fighting among themselves to keep their men/women working. Finally, as a kicker, union workers, desperate after months of unemployment, doing anything, even accepting non-union work to survive. How can we call this progress? To my “yuppie” friends, which my very own children are part of, be careful what you wish for!

Unions are our future, not our demise! We will see the demise of progress if they suddenly disappear. My young lovelies, read and study the history of pre-union times, or should I say, “Google it”?

Another interesting attendee was SANDY STEWART of Tacony. Stewart is set to run as a Republican for the 6th Dist. City Council seat currently held by JOAN KRAJEWSKI. If the rumors are true Krajewski is retiring for real this time, Steward is expected to face STATE REP. MIKE McGEEHAN in the General Election. Also

mentioned as Democrats in that District are former atLarge nominee MIKE DRISCOLL and IBEW 98 political guru BOBBY HENON. Also looking ahead to next year, my big ears have picked up the distant thump of an old friend, GEORGE BOCHETTO, coming through the jungle. Sounds like he might be on his way to a citywide race of some sort.

In terms of this year’s races, it appears certain that the Republicans will retake the 8th Congressional seat

with former CONGRESSMAN MIKE FITZPATRICK. In the 13th, DEE ADCOCK was moved up in the hierarchy of the NRCC’s Young Guns program and our state-wide candidates appear to be locks for their respective races.

Kudos to both the GOP City Committee and the State Committee operation in Philadelphia for working their tails off to fill election boards throughout the city. This competition may actually be a good thing for the GOP after all.

Near the end of his life, his Italian ancestry was made public. He was survived by his adopted son, Native American flautist Robert “Tree” Cody.
