A group of 7th- & 8th-grade girls Catholic Youth Organization basketball players can walk around school calling themselves champions this week. The St. Richard’s Girls Varsity Basketball team won the championship at the 17th annual John Redmond Memorial Tournament over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The highly competitive tournament features the best CYO basketball teams in the City. Councilman at Large Jim Kenney and John Redmond, a Philadelphia firefighter, co-founded the tourney 17 years ago and continue to run the event. The victory by the St. Richard’s girls marks the first time int he history of the tournament any team from South Philadelphia has taken the 1st-place prize. In addition to providing the opportunity to compete to become champions, the Tournament provides youth the opportunity to compete for highschool scholarship awards through an essay-writing contest.

Sky Is The Limit For Job Corps ’10 Graduates The South Philadelphia-based Job Corps education center will roll out brand-new graduates next week. Administrator and teachers have told the graduates the “sky is the limit,” now they have learned some critical job-related skills. McGlasson In true Rockyesque fashion, the old Spectrum was a stubborn fighter as she put up a solid fight against a 4ton wrecking ball that dished out five blows before her bricks began to break last week. One onlooker said, that when the ball bounced off the first few times without doing damage, “I said to myself, ‘She’s not going down without a fight.’“ Jason Orange was one of the 1,500 fans watching the start of demolition of the Spectrum last week. “Anyone my age will have some fond memories of this place, it was a special place; a real South Philadelphia landmark,” mused Orange. Orange, 40, of Packer Avenue said he collected one of his treasured possessions inside the soon-to-be fully demolished Spectrum. Orange said he didn’t need to (Cont. page 2)
