February: A Month To Love And Reflect On Departed by Maria Merlino February is a month that is filled with hearts and flowers. Sadly, the month of February in Philadelphia is also the cheerless anniversary of the death of Police Officer Daniel Boyle, and birthday of the late Marine Sgt. James “Daddy Wags” Wagner. Twenty years ago, Officer Boyle, as a 21-year-old rookie, was gunned down by career criminal Edward Bracey, who is now on death row. Boyle’s father, Patrick, a retired detective and 38-year veteran of the Police Dept., channeled his grief by establishing The Officer Daniel Boyle Scholarship Fund. (Cont On Page 3)

The Beauty Of A Loveble "Beast" Hundreds To Remember Chris Gedraitis At Fourth Annual Youth Sports Fundraiser by Rory G. McGlasson The spirit of a young man, known affectionately as “the beast” when he once graced the sports fields of South Philadelphia, well and truly lives on. For the fourth straight year, over 500 people are expected to pay homage to one Christopher “The Beast” Gedraitis on Sunday. Friends and family from the river wards in Fishtown and second street to the South Philadelphia accents residing in Wildwood will party hard for a cause in northern Liberties on Sunday as they remember Gedraitis, who passed away, aged 30, in 2006. Chris was a born and bred “Second-Streeter” known as “the Beast” on the football field for his uncanny strength that defied his size and stature. Chris was All-Catholic tight end and guard when he played football at St. John Neumann HS, and he played baseball and other sports for years at local recreation centers. A coach once quipped, “Look at that tight end; the boy is a beast.” And in true South Philadelphia fashion, the nickname was overheard and it stuck. (Cont. Page 2)
