Online grassroots effort to raise funds to transform Ralph Brooks Tot Lot at 20th & Tasker into state-of-the-art playground raises $241,000. by Jessie Fox On Jul. 12, 1988, seven-yearold Ralph Brooks, Jr. was running toward his grandmother’s house on 20th Street near Dickinson Street when a bullet hit him from behind, severing his spinal cord. Brooks has been paralyzed ever since. The basketball court, and tot lot at 20th & Tasker Streets that carries his name, though, could soon be transformed into a state-of-the-art basketball court and playground.

“Revitalizing the Ralph Brooks Tot Lot is not only a great project for the youth and community, but also a statement of peace,” said Councilman Kenyatta Johnson. Johnson has helped raise awareness of an online fundraising drive for the basketball court. Thus far, $241,000 has been raised, thanks to Urban Roots, a nonprofit led by local real-estate developers Jeff Tubbs and Bob Shaw. If fundraising reaches $275,000, ground can be broken at the park.
