Author Famà Finds Poetry Everywhere by Maria Merlino
South Philadelphia poet Maria Famà was born with a silver pen in her hand. “I wrote since I was a little kid,” Famà said from her home on Tuesday. “Before I could even write, I would scribble and pretend I was writing. Then, when I did learn to read and write, I had a passion for it. And my parents always read to me.” Growing up at 11th & McKean, Famà, 64, attended Epiphany School where she got a classical education from the Sisters of St. Joseph. Father Vincent Farhat has been coming to the Italian Market for the last three years to deliver ashes. Inside a sheet of aluminum foil, Farhat carries a small bowl of ashes that he had blessed the Sunday before. In his pocket is a Ziploc bag of Q-tips – and extra napkins for those who ask him if they could take ashes with them
for their family. “If they cannot come to me, then I will bring ashes to them,” Farhat said, as he walks from his home at St. Maron’s Maronite Catholic Church, 1013 Ellsworth Street. Farhat walks the market giving ashes to anyone who asked for them. He visits workers along the ninth street corridor – and makes home visits to people who can(Cont. Page 2)
