Will Statue Of Mary Come To Broad 200 Rally At Shipyard Street In Time For Pope Francis’ Visit?
by Lou Baldwin Religious shrines or art in the public square are relatively rare in the United States but quite common in Europe, South America and other areas that have a predominantly Catholic culture. If all goes as planned, in the nottoo-distant future that will change in South Philadelphia when a shrine will be prominently displayed by a wall of the Carto Funeral Home, clearly visible at 220 S. Broad Street. It will be in the form of a shrine with a large bronze image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patroness of the Americas, as she appeared on the tilma (cloak) of St. Juan Diego in 16th-century Mexico. When it happens, it will fulfill a dream of Sister Paula Beierschmitt, IHM. Sister Paula will not be physically present when her efforts come to fruition, but rest assured she will be looking down from above. Sister Paula, a gifted artist in her own right and the founder of the American Academy of Sacred Arts in South Philadelphia in 1993, died in September 2013. It all goes back to 2008 when Sister OUR LADY of Guadalupe is depicted in this mosaic in Cathedral Basilica Paula, who was visiting Mount St. of SS. Peter & Paul and will be subject of a bronze statue at 2200 S. Broad (Cont. Page 2) Street. Photo by Sarah Webb
