New Book Delves into SPHS History
BY ELDON GRAHAM OUTH PHILADELPHIA High School is diving deep into its past, in literary form. The book, by Dr. Tony Evangelisto, is simply known as “South Philadelphia High School.” It chronicles the humble beginnings of the school and all the teachers, principals and students that came through and shaped the school’s legacy into what it is today. The famous high school located at Broad & Snyder is a staple that has seen a lot and had a lot of recognized individuals come through its hallowed halls. The insti-
S
tution holds over 100 years of history and it has finally been put to the page for the entire world to recognize. The inspiration for the book comes from a moment Evangelisto had with his wife, Carol, and one of the school’s illustrious alumni, Louis Lonzo, when Lonzo was honored by the school as a violinist for the Philadelphia Orchestra and putting him into the school’s cultural hall of fame in 2014. That’s when Carol asked a question that sent him on a two-year journey into the history of “Southern,” as it is commonly called.

“She looked at me and said, ‘Tony, how can one school produce so many incredibly talented people?’ I gave her a glib answer but then I said, wait there’s more to it than that,” Evangelisto related. And that’s when he started working on the book. Not long after, Evangelisto contacted Marc Adelman, one of the contributors to SPHS, who attended the school in 1954 and graduated in 1957. Adelman leads the school’s effort in saving its the archives and has taken that position for over 10 years. “When I walked away from the 100-year anniversary celebration, I knew I had to do something, because as I spoke to people, no one knew about the history,” said Adelman. His initiative led him to a dark, dusty, vermin-filled closet in the school, which housed the school’s history – from the architect’s blueprints of the original school from 1905. Much of this material from the archives assisted research for the book, including material from yearbooks, the public library and the Urban Archives at Temple University. The alumni association for South Philadelphia High School gave every bit of help that you could possibly imagine when informed about the work. Published by Arcadia Publishing, this book covers a lot of territory: the early days of the school, stars in entertainment and the arts, law and service, athletics, science, writing, and education – and “the secret of Southern’s success.” Details of the original South Philadelphia High School are included in the book and which both men fondly remember attending. Facts which could only come the people who actually attended and from
information that is scarcely available today. The first school existed for only 48 years and was torn down in 1955. The current school opened across the street from the previous school in 1955 and has stood on Snyder Avenue for the past 63 years. Some pieces of the original school can be found inside the alumni room in stained-glass windows that represent the army and the navy; they originally resided in the hallways of the old school. “What readers are going to find remarkable is the content of the people that went here and the incredible … incredible array of talent,” said Evangelisto People like singer Chubby Checker; Jack Klugman, actor; Patty Jackson, radio personality; Eddie Gottlieb, founder of the National Basketball Association; H. Patrick Swygert, president emeritus of Howard University; and many more received an education there. There wasn’t high expectations for a school in a low-income neighborhood. “The difference is here our immigrant neighbors, our poor kids had to prove that they wanted to go to high school,” said Adelman. The school was originally planned so that some of the students could enter trades instead of academic positions after high school. “South Philadelphia High School is the epitome of the success of a public high school that was built first to handle manual training, because they called it the High School of Manual Training. Those in power at the Philadelphia School District didn’t have the faith that these poor immigrant kids could be academic,” Evangelisto said. “It’s a combination of the neighborhoods, the poverty that we all experienced and the support and caring of
all the teachers that made the difference for us. How many kids come through poverty and achieve the kind of things that are graduates did? For us, the issue is that there is a sense of family here that you don’t find it in too many places.” Growing up in a troubled household caused Evangelisto to seek refuge in the neighborhood gang, which put him on a different path and facilitated his seeking guidance from one of his school teachers. Evangelisto never thought himself to be the best student but that changed through his experiences at Southern. “The mixture of people to me was so rich that I feel a debt to the school because it gave me the ability to do what I’ve done. I became a college professor and I’ve taught all around the world. A lot of it had to do with the fact that I had teachers here who cared enough for me to challenge me and to help me believe in myself.” He graduated from La Salle University, majoring in English. He then went to Boston College Law School but had a change of heart when he enlisted in the army with his brother in 1962. He spent nine years in the service. After the army, he found his passion in teaching. His first gig came at North East Catholic High School. He then taught a Temple University for two years. He eventually found his way to the College of New Jersey, where he spent 41 years. “I love teaching,” Dr. Evangelisto said. “Part of it is I realized that I have a need to give back to kids and do for them want the teachers here at Southern did for me.” Proceeds from the book will go to the school. It will be available for purchase on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

POLS on the STREET BY JOE SHAHEELI ENNSYLVANIA is a state where Democratic Party strategists have high hopes this year. In January, the DNC gave the Pennsylvania Democratic Party a $100,000 grant through the State Party Innovation Fund. rectors for five target regions, as well as to open five regional field offices. SPIF boosts early organizing through state parties and supports efforts to engage African American, Latino, Asian American and Pacific Islander, millennial and rural communities. In early July, the DNC announced a multimillion-dollar investment in base community organizing ahead of the 2018 midterm elections. Combining traditional bootson-the-ground organizing with innovative digital and technological tools, these investments will support the DNC’s IWillVote initiative that aims to reach 50 million voters by Election Day. Through this program, the DNC invested an additional $175,000 in the PDP to help fund organizing efforts in State Rep.

African American and Latino communities across the state, with a unique emphasis on engaging the Puerto Rican community. One priority is to engage with Puerto Ricans who have recently relocated to Pennsylvania and elsewhere following Hurricane Maria. Although many Puerto Ricans normally will support some Republicans, Democrats believe the poor handling of the hurricane crisis by the Trump administration has created an opening for them in the fall. In addition, the DNC acquired the cell phone number of every registered voter across the country for whom a cell phone was commercially available. In Pennsylvania alone, this yielded more than 3 million new cell phone numbers.

We Are Not Fake News

OPINION Editor’s note: The Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association is sharing the below call to action initiated by The Boston Globe and circulated by the state press associations to encourage newspapers to fight back against attacks on journalists as the “enemy of the American people.” N MAY 30, 1783, the Pennsylvania Evening Post & Daily Advertiser published its first daily edition, becoming the first daily newspaper not only in Pennsylvania, but in our young nation. Today, more than 200 daily and weekly newspapers across the commonwealth carry on the ideals of not only that newspaper, but the Constitution and the free press it ensures. Today, we stand with many other newspapers across the country to defend our profession and the communities we serve. We are not “Fake News.” Journalists pledge to report real, honest and credible news. We go to school to learn how to tell people’s stories, record history, sift through the hazes of propaganda and uncover the truth. We cover the stories and uncover the information everyone in the community needs to make informed decisions on who to vote for, where to eat, and what to buy. Mistakes are not “Fake
O
News.” Journalists do their best to report truthful information. In today’s world of the 24-hour news cycle, sometimes we make a mistake in the rush to sort through conflicting information and tell a story. We then do our best to correct the error and learn from it. This misinformation happens for a variety of reasons, but the mistake is not deliberate nor is it malicious. News you don’t like is not “Fake News.” Not all news is happy news. We cover the tragedies, the crime, the tax hikes, the shady backroom deals. Just because it makes us uncomfortable, or angry, doesn’t mean it’s any less true. Journalists would not be doing their jobs if they didn’t cover the things that unsettle us. Many times, those are the things that impact our lives the most. Opinions are not “Fake News.” The editorials and op-eds we write and publish are just that – opinion. We endorse candidates based on the information we have and who we think will best serve our community. You may agree with us, or you may not. That’s OK. Our job is to provide you with the facts so you can form your own opinion and make your own informed decisions. Journalists are not the enemy of the people. We are the people. We live in the communities we cover and, just like everyone else, want those communities to succeed. For communities to be at their best, the people who live in them need to know what is happening. Journalists are the eyes, ears, and voice of the people we serve. We sit at the school-
board meetings so you know who the next principal will be. We attend the town-council meetings so you know which company is building in your backyard. We ask tough questions of government officials so you know where and how your tax dollars are being spent. For every candidate we investigate, there’s a small-business owner we profile. For every tax hike we report, there’s a highschool football/basketball/ soccer win we celebrate. For every congressman we question, there’s a charitable event we share. There is nothing fake about the communities, the people, the businesses we cover. There is nothing fake about our loyalty to those same communities, people and businesses. We are not perfect. We know that. We also know that the news we provide can play a vital role in keeping our communities safe and economically sound. We cannot allow our leaders to erode the public’s trust in the media. Doing so would also erode the quality of information you receive, affecting the decisions you make. The 1st Amendment is just 45 words in length, but they are mighty. They guarantee our freedom of speech and of the press. Journalists are your safety valves, whistleblowers and reporters-in-chief who cover everything from what is going on in your town, to the cat stuck in the tree. We are passionate about our duties to document the history of our communities and serve as watchdogs to protect the public’s interests … your interests.

Harry Foy, C, past president of Local 98, was founder of the Down Under Party 27 years ago. Contrary to rumor, the event is not associated with Australia. The first “Down Under” began with just 30 attendees at Harry’s seashore home but grew too large for his lawn. Congratulating Harry are Mike Mischulli, L, recording secretary of #98, and Steve Conway, business agent for Local#107 Teamsters.

N A NEW CAMPAIGN ad, Democratic U.S. SEN. BOB CASEY attacks his opponent, CONGRESSMAN LOU BARLETTA (R-Luzerne) for voting seven years ago to restructure the Medicare program. While the voice overlay in the ad says Barletta’s vote was to restructure Medicare, the ad in large bright letters says Barletta voted to “end” Medicare. The basis of the Casey campaign’s ad is the 2011 plan by then-House Budget Committee CHAIRMAN PAUL RYAN. The plan
EVERYDAY PEOPLE BY DENISE CLAY OU WANT TO know the one thing I hate the most as a reporter? I hate seeing really feel good stories about people doing really good things for their families and communities take a really nasty turn that involves something that leads us to the court system. This week’s really feel-good story that appears to be taking a really nasty turn toward is the story of Saudia Shuler, owner of Country Cookin’ in North Philadelphia.

would have altered Medicare, giving future retirees government allotments to buy their own insurance in private insurance markets. Politifact in 2011 said the ad went too far to say Ryan’s plan would “end Medicare.” Politifact said that stating it would end “Medicare as we know it” is not inaccurate, and labeled the assertion that it would as the 2011 “Lie of the Year.” However, the real lie would be by any Democrat – that Medicare as we know it is sustainable. The Medicare Trust is projected by the Medicare Trustees to be depleted by 2026 (eight years from now). The Casey campaign contends the Ryan plan would force seniors to pay $6,400 per annum to supplement the decreased coverage. They contend this decrease would cause seniors to make hard and bad choices. Are they not already doing so? Many seniors on Medicare are already paying for supple-
mental Medicare plans. Medicare, under the Democrats’ Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), has limited disbursements for approved procedures. While the services covered have not changed, the payments to doctors and hospitals per service have been curtailed. I know of a medical-supply business specializing in diabetes treatment products that will not take Medicare insurance, but will accept private insurance. Prior to Obamacare, similar companies accepted Medicare. I have also heard anecdotally that elderly patients are finding it increasingly difficult to find new doctors willing to take them with only Medicare without a supplemental policy. Medicare as we know it ended with Obamacare and things are only going to get worse for seniors until the system is overhauled. Oddly, it appears the Democrats who told their constituents (Cont. Shuler was hit with a federal indictment on Tuesday on eight counts of fraud and one count of theft of government funds for taking $37,000 in Social Security disability benefits while working and opening her own restaurant. If she’s convicted, she faces 140 years in prison. In case you don’t remember, Shuler is the mom who put the “send” in “Prom Send Off” a few years back by turning the area near her home and restaurant into an oasis in Dubai, complete with camels, fancy sports cars, and not one, but three dates for her son, J.J. Eden, who is now attending Delaware State University. She also threw a Christmas party —-complete with live reindeer of course —- that included gifts for the community in the form of toys, clothes and a gourmet Christmas dinner. While I never got the chance to eat in her restaurant, I was told that the food was tasty.
She went all out for him because she had suffered a stroke, cancer and seizures, and didn’t think she’d be alive to celebrate this milestone with him. Which is where the Social Security comes in. When you have the combination that I referenced above, you usually file for disability so that you can maintain your home and your family while you’re trying to recover. What the feds are alleging that Shuler did was take that money and continued to work. That she actually wasn’t so sick after all. And they’re probably using things like the prom sendoffs (she’s started doing them for other people now), the Christmas party (she’s also doing a Back to School backpack giveaway) and her business as evidence. She’s retained a lawyer and plans to fight this in court. But the feds, as former Congressman Chaka Fattah, (Cont. Page 13)
WALKING the BEAT BY JOE SHAY STIVALA S OF EARLY THIS week, Mayor Jim KENNEY had not signed the CONSTRUCTION-TAX bill. Will he POCKET-VETO it? Many American cities are cutting back on zoning restrictions to spur development. Seattle has answered with the 2015 “Grand Bargain”: In return for fewer restrictions and more land for building, developers would agree to rent some units below the market rate – or pay into an affordable-housing account. LECTION LAWYER GREG HARVEY has passed away at 81. Harvey was the first lawyer in Philadelphia to make election law a true area of practice and indispensable tool for politicians. He worked for Democrats and knew every trick in the book. He also knew how to counter every trick in the book. His skill was utilized by many politicians, including STATE SEN. LARRY FARNESE, who was able to overcome an intense pe-
zoning” could be seen as anti-millennial (?) New York Mayor Bill de Blasio wants one-fifth of new units to be at below-market rate. San Francisco would go as high as 30%. AMAZON got into politics when Seattle passed a $275-per-employee tax on companies with over $20m annual income. Amazon stopped new construction, and hinted at more moves. The tax was rescinded. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Mayor Kenney and to former State Rep. Harold JAMES…. Happy Born Day as well to Douglas NESMITH, a caring man when it comes to community needs. Adrian “GOOD MORNING VIETNAM” Kronauer passed away. I met him in Philly at a vets’ event while he attended law school here. The movie stretched it a bit…. And lawyer Greg HARVEY passed at 81. As a lad, I was assigned to him on the election-day Democratic Lawyer Committee, and watched as he argued with City Council President
Paul D’ORTONA outside a polling place. I watched when he and State Sen. “Bantam” Ben DONOLOW shoved each other in a City Hall courtroom over nominating petitions. Greg discovered an 1895 law where you could NOT use red or green ink on petitions. And I listened when he told me not to run for legislator. Greg hailed from Kearney, N.J., where his dad was mayor. With local media touting a mail ballot, which would eliminate committee persons, The Economist reports that China is STARTING GRID Committees. Each grid person has an area to visit families and report needs for human service, or potholes. NO BIG DEAL, the delay on moving the RIZZO statue. tition challenge to become the nominee and eventually get elected senator from the 1st Senatorial District in 2008. But Harvey was the go-to guy for anyone who was being challenged and he was the go-to guy to challenge. Extremely well-liked Republican NORBERT McGETTIGAN also passed away. He lived a very full life, living well into his 90s. McGettigan founded a very successful travel agency in Philadelphia. Although he remained down to earth, he was a rock-solid conservative Republican and often held court at the Union League to cry how the Democrats were destroying America and Philadelphia. But he always supported his friends, even if they were Democrats. Now that the progressives have taken over the 1st Ward in South Philly and are making other inroads, it will be interesting to see if other
political leaders are held to a litmus test. Socialists in Pittsburgh who endorsed JOHN FETTERMAN for lieutenant governor have said that he will hold GOV. TOM WOLF to a litmus test on such issues as legalized marijuana. It should be interesting to watch. Nationwide, many of the party types still emerged victorious. But the biggest win was in N.Y.C., where Democratic Socialist ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ at the ripe age of 26 beat 10 term incumbent in House Democratic Leadership. Democratic socialists use this victory to continue to push 80-year-old BERNIE SANDERS as a potential presidential. The Sanders supporters are absolutely out to lunch. The “progressive surge” will likely be short-lived. In fact, it has the potential to destroy true Democratic chances of beating Trump by fostering (Cont. Page 13)

(Cont. From Page 12) splinters between bickering factions. Democrats should pray that the Republicans remain disjointed. DONALD TRUMP helps that. Or maybe he doesn’t. There was the same kind of confusion and disunity in 2016; and what happened was a Trump presidency. A hot tip from an unlikely source: Word on the street has Republican polling showing that a key constituency will be suburban women
– but not the usual suburban soccer moms. The new model is to capture the vote of women 47 years old who have previously not voted. Watch to see how candidates try to adjust their message to capture these key votes.

Real South Philadelphia girls wear T-shirts instead of bathing-suit cover-ups; love Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin; call the Italian Market “Ninth Street”; do the “South Philly Slide” through stop signs; eat macaroni on Sunday. No matter what kind of pasta you had, it was still “macaroni.” Real South Philadelphians call FDR Park “The Lakes”; will play softball rather than eat dinner; go to New Jersey movie theaters; call Second Street “2 Street”; add the letters “y” or “ie” to all names – hence Joey, Paulie, Mikey, Sammy and Bobby. And if any of them had a last name that started with “D” they were Bobby “D”, Jerry “D”, Johnny “D,” etc.
Real South Philadelphians know the difference between pizza and tomato pie; have a friend in the business ... any business; aren’t afraid to spend money; remember the ballpark across from Pat’s & Geno’s was also a cemetery. Real South Philadelphian girls get serenaded at their wedding or the night before at their Mom’s house! – sometimes by an entire string band; call calamari “Golamad!” and cotechino “Goodageen” and ricotta “Reegut” and cappicola as “Gobaghoul”; say “yous” instead of you guys or y’all, “jeweat?” instead of “did you eat”; and the response would be “jew?” instead of “did you?” One snack: Tastykakes. Real South Philadelphians know about it if you say any of the following: Bo-Bet, submarine races, lemonade (cherry or lemon), Prrreettttzells, Broad Street Beach, The Lakes, Goin’ uptown, “Is it Frank’s? thanks!” played games like Chink, Dead Box, football or Atlantic City baseball on the “flat” at Southern, Jailbreak; or played hockey, minature, half-ball, pimple-ball, Pitch pennies to the crack, Ins & outs, can still draw a Dead Box. Real South Philadelphians call South Philadelphia High “Southern”; could always count on a good fight at the Neumann-Southern game on Thanksgiving Day; remember when “Pop” would sell water ice out of two green barrels with pot lids while he sat on a beach chair with an umbrella at 13th & Oregon! Taxes can be paid with a credit card. State and federal governments accept and even encourage such payment. However, a credit-card debt incurred to pay tax is probably not dischargeable.

A Petition has been filed asking the court to put an end to all rights you have to your child Baby Girl Haines who was born on 1/26/18 at Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, PA, as well as any rights E.H. has to Baby Girl Haines. The court has set a hearing to consider ending your rights to your child. That hearing will be held on September 10, 2018 at 1:00 p.m., One Montgomery Plaza, Swede Street, Courtroom #14, Orphan’s Court Division, Norristown, PA 19404 before Judge Murphy. You are warned that even if you fail to appear at the scheduled hearing, the hearing will go on without you and your rights to your child as well as the rights of E.H. to that child may be ended by the court without your being present. You have a right to be represented at the hearing by a lawyer. You should take this paper to your lawyer at once. If you do not have a lawyer or cannot afford one, go to or telephone the office set forth below to find out where you can get legal help. An important option may be available to you under Act 101 of PA Law that allows for an enforceable voluntary agreement for continuing contact following an adoption between an adoptive parent, a child, a birth parent and/or a birth relative of the child, if all parties agree and the voluntary agreement is approved by the court. The agreement must be signed and approved by the court to be legally binding. You are also warned that if you fail to file either an acknowledgment of paternity pursuant to 23 Pa.C.S.A. Section 2503 (d) relating to acknowledgement and claim of paternity, and fail to either appear at a hearing to object to the termination of your rights or file a written objection to such termination with the court prior to the hearing, your rights may be terminated under Pa.C.S.A. 2503(d) or 2504(c) of the adoption act.
LAWYER REFERRAL AND INFORMATION SERVICE 100 West Airy Street, P.O. Box 268 Norristown, PA 19404 (800) 560-LAW1
There are at least two important reasons why credit-card convenience may result in non-dischargeable debt. In the first place, it could be and often is considered fraud to incur a credit-card debt with the intent to bankrupt the debt. Many courts have ruled that 11 USC §523(a)(2), an exception to the discharge for money obtained by false pretenses or fraud, applies to credit-card purchases made without the intent to repay them. Important information can be found in an article by my colleague, Atlanta bankruptcy attorney Jonathan Ginsberg, called “Recent Credit Card Use and Filing for Bankruptcy - What are some Guidelines?”
Even with the intent to repay a credit-card debt when the charge was made, the debt may be exempt from discharge when it was incurred to pay a tax. Two new laws were added by Congress in 2005 to protect credit-card companies in just this situation. When used to pay a tax that is otherwise non-dischargeable, 11 USC §523(a)(14) and 11 USC 523(a)(14A) protect the creditor from discharge of the debt in bankruptcy. Under the new laws, use of a credit card to pay tax may turn a tax that is dischargeable with the passage of time, into a debt that never becomes dischargeable. While the bankruptcy code allows discharge of person-
al income tax after a waiting period, there is no such provision in the new law. This is yet another reason that payment of tax with a credit card may be a bad idea. Personal income tax that is due for recent years is considered a priority and is not dischargeable under the bankruptcy code. While the tax would become dischargeable in two or three years if not paid, the credit-card debt used to pay it would not. Next Week’s Question: Is bankruptcy the best way to save your home? 2013 to 2017 from unions, according to the Commonwealth Foundation. Additional union funds have been donated to Wolf this year. It is reported that roughly 35% of this year’s campaign fund comes from unions. What does Melena have to say about the $3.1 mil-
lion that insurance billionaire TOM STEYER has announced he will use for Democratic get-out-the-vote efforts in three competitive congressional seats in Pennsylvania that could potentially benefit Wolf indirectly? The Koch brothers are buying pro-energy votes,
but the union donations to Wolf have nothing to do with Wolf’s continued blockage of privatizing the liquor stores in the commonwealth to protect unionized employees. Yes, Wolf caved on exceptions to our current liquor laws by allowing limited sale of wine in some grocery
stores. However, if you shop there, you will note that the same products are in the state-run stores for the same prices. Wolf seems more than willing to ignore the citizens in the commonwealth who overwhelmingly want privatized liquor sales, to save some public-sector union jobs.

The daily press reported on real-estate property description errors which have an effect on real-estate tax. Years ago, a door-to-door SHOE-LEATHER look at each of the 557,000 parcels was planned. It needs to happen. EACH home is unique. The answer is that assessors (now called Evaluators) need A LOT OF TIME for scholarly look at properties. Some homes may have added a pool, deck, or addition which needs to be described! Some are vacant and vandalized or have been demolished. You should not hand an Assessor a printout with thousands of properties on it and ask for it to be returned in two weeks.

BIKE RIDERS are vocal in Center City and get their way with new young reporters in support. A daily press story stated that bike deaths are more common in poorer neighborhoods where it is not easy to organize folks to push for improvement. You downtown vocal bikers could HELP these neighborhoods by going from “me” to “WE” mode. A neat article about the Billy Penn statue atop City Hall, and the many artworks in the building, was unaware of the hundreds of COPPER heads that jutted up from the cornice of City Hall on all four sides a few decades ago. They slowly began to disappear (?). An explanation was NEVER forthcoming.

(Cont. From Page 12) from the rolls between 2014 and 2016.This is more than POPULATION GROWTH, or NEW VOTERS! It reports that much of striking voters from lists is based on poor research. This is FOUR MILLION more than a previous period Does this monster grow via parthenogenesis? The GOP says it is important to protect against vote fraud. BS. Next: Philly is billed as the poorest city by some media. (Actually, the census Bureau says it is 5TH POOREST of large cities.) The Economist says that methods of determining
poverty levels are flawed. AOL NEWS says that many want Trump to take over the media. Is it that Trump is popular? No, many do not trust the media. Former Chief Justice Ron CASTILLE testified in an ETHICS hearing. Should Ron take a break and enjoy retirement? I have been asked if I am happy at the recent good news for Chaka FATTAH? Yes, because of the FEDS’ need to prosecute elected officials while the DRUG CRISIS festers. I read where the GOP picked gun lobbyists over victims. Do voters elect lawmakers so that they can reject voter hopes for better gun control?
