LOCATED at 750 S. Broad Street, Tindley Temple United Methodist Church is still an active congregation. The church’s soup kitchen, started by C. A. Tindley during the Great Depression, is still in operation. Tindley Temple maintains a reputation for its musical emphasis, notably over 50 years of performing a Messiah concert every December. For Black History Month, we honor this historic church, widely considered the birthplace of gospel music. In 1901, United Methodist preacher Charles Albert Tindley made history by writing the lyrics to hymn-turned-anthem, “We Shall Overcome.” The church was added to National Register of Historic Places on April 15, 2011.
