Which leads us to once again remind all our readers that the way Philly goes, so goes Pennsylvania. Pollsters have lately moved the state from a Democratic win to a tossup. The Philly vote is crucial and will need to replicate its past performances for recent presidential elections.

Congressman Brady knows this. His “welcome to Philly” party Sunday night saw at least 1,500 people gather at his invitation to welcome Nancy Pelosi and other Congress Members from around the nation. This reception put the city’s best foot forward.

Bob has been carrying the load and has ignited a great deal of enthusiasm among the ward leaders, committee peo-

ple and the city’s top unions and their rank and file. They know the mission: Get out the vote.

Cops Are Unhappy With DNC and Hillary Philadelphia Lodge 5 Fraternal Order of Police President John McNesby, with a sizable vote of loyal retirees and active-duty policemen and women, mostly living in the Northeast, believes police were insulted by the exclusion of police widows and family members in the DNC and Hillary Clinton’s choice of speakers.

by Joe Shaheeli We all had to be impressed by what we have seen of the Democratic National Convention this week, with the best to come tonight. But we need to remind those of us in the trenches – knocking at doors, making telephone calls and leafleting everywhere – not to make the mistakes made by the agenda-setters at the DNC. That mistake? To explain, we must go back to the days of yesteryear when the only Congressman ever was reelected after he died and was buried.

There were many reasons for that … and the fact the powers in the Democratic Party in Philadelphia needed more time to come up with a successor for a special election.

That Congressman was Bill

Barrett, a Philly legend.

Though not the party chairman, he ruled the roost. His sagest advice was, “Don’t mention your enemy in print or by word or in any campaign literature. Otherwise you are reinforcing his name as an alternative choice and keeping it alive in the mind of the voters.”

This DNC convention notably succeeded in making Trump the devil, the enemy of humble working people, and anything else you could imagine that was not good. Only problem: counting the words Hillary and Trump, and the signs on the floor, Trump, Trump, etc., you could not forget the Trump name.

But one thing the DNC was sure of is its Philly support.

Our Opinion DNC, City Did Their Best!

God bless the patience of the City’s Police Bicycle Corps.

Their quiet presence sent a calming message to some of the thousands of protestors looking to create a ruckus and earn some television time.

It was obvious Commissioner Richard Ross’ blue line knew what to do, how to do it, and were prepared for anything … even bringing huge buses up the rear, just in case protestors needed to be carried off.

While political tensions sent an electric air through some of the convention proceedings, both in the Wells Fargo Center and on the streets of the city, the convention was overall a lot of fun for all Philadelphians – even for protestors, even for Republicans. The actual exercise of democratic rights, including freedom of speech, can be stimulating and enjoyable for a community that accepts it as normal and healthy.

The DNC provided innumerable events to entertain delegates, non-delegates, protestors, and natives every day and evening, some late into the night.

Tonight, the DNC comes to a close and with it the excitement and attention it brought to the City of Philadelphia. We know our tourist industry will reap a boon from all this for quite a while.

Another Opinion End Life Without Parole This House Bill needs to be supported; otherwise, it will not see the light of day. It will not make it out of committee, let alone go into the books as law. Dawkins needs to be supported 100% on this. Anyone who wants a change of this magnitude to occur truly needs to be on board by reaching out to your elected officials immediately and expressing your support for HB 2135.

Do not let this bill go to waste!

HB 2135 would be a major step toward ushering the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania out of its dysfunctional stasis into a fairer and more-reasonable condition. It is possible to give transformed lifers who have matured and are now part of the solution, rather than the problem, a second chance at life in the free world.

Most states across the country have either allowed parole to be an option for lifers or are changing their laws in order to make it a possibility. Pennsylvania is way overdue for this change, so let’s change it together.

In his memorandum to the Members of the House of Representatives for the State of Pennsylvania, Dawkins pointed out several facts, including but not limited to: As of 2008, Pennsylvania has had the second-highest LWOP population in the entire nation; keeping those sentenced to LWOP incarcerated creates an avoidable expense for the Pennsylvania Dept. of Corrections — and the taxpayers whose money fund it; a sentence of LWOP is unfair to the individuals whom have reformed themselves and are considered model inmates. A sentence of LWOP is an injustice — period.

The mainstream media last week announced the Republican convention was in chaos. If the two-to-three-minute dustup on the floor about the affirmation of the current rules (regarding how states allocate delegate votes) and the 30-second booing of SEN. TED CRUZ is chaos, what do they call what happened in Philadelphia Monday night? No one heard SEN. AL FRANKEN’S (D-Minn.) speech nor much of Sarah Silverman’s comments for the booing by SEN. BERNIE SANDERS’ supporters.

Much ado was made of MELANIA TRUMP’S use of less than 20 words from a speech by MICHELLE OBAMA. Let me guess the mainstream media thinks this is more disastrous for the Republicans than those offensive, racist and divisive emails among Democratic National Committee members anonymously released this week. REINCE PREIBUS was not a fan of Donald Trump, but unlike his DNC counterpart DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ, he was not booed off the stage by Trumps supporters. Wasserman Schultz was forced to resign at the outset of the convention over emails released showing her overt attempts to undermine Sanders.

I will give the Democrats credit in the selection of a wellrespected and honorable interim DNC Chairwoman in DONNA BRAZILE. Last week, Elephant Corner went to press before the end of the GOP convention. DONALD, JR., in addition to giving one of the best speeches at the convention, had the privilege of announcing the delegate vote from the State of New York (Cont. Page 17)

by Denise Clay Well, the 2016 Presidential Circus has moved to our fair city in the form of the Democratic National Convention.

Delegates from around the country and those territories we’re not trying to give either full citizenship or freedom to (I see you, Puerto Rico), are gathered here to vote former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and newly minted running mate Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia in as the Democratic Party’s nominees for President and Vice President.

Or at least that’s the plan.

Another group of folks from all over the country and those places we neither want to give full freedom or full citizenship to (again, I see you Puerto Rico) has come with the purpose of getting party delegates, especially superdelegates, to change their allegiances from Clinton to Bernie Sanders, thus making him the party’s nominee.

Some of this stems from news that a bunch of hacked DNC emails published on the Wikileaks site include correspondence between members that would indicate a preference for Clinton over Sanders in the primaries. The leak led to Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigning from her post as DNC chair on Sunday.

But much of this resistance from the Bernie or Bust contingent stems from a desire to bend the DNC to its will despite the more than 3-million vote lead Clinton had over Sanders.

Yo! Here we go again with this question from the Waffleman -- have you ever had a flashback? What is a flashback? It is a small hint of things gone by that usually triggers many pleasant memories. Once started, though, these memories seem to grow like an avalanche: easy to start but hard to stop. It is like dropping a snowball on a hill. As it rolls down the hill, it gathers more snow, getting bigger. I will try to get one started with these offerings: EDDIE’S ICE-CREAM SHOP. The local ice-cream parlor at 12th & Mifflin Streets where you could get a generous ice-cream cone, float, soda, sundae or banana split at a reasonable price. All the ice-cream was hand-dipped by Eddie. The guys and girls made this their popular meeting place. The neighbors and police considered this place a hangout.

GRAVY. That’s what spaghetti sauce is called in South Philadelphia. The secret brews of tomatoes, various spices and herbs were cooked by many mothers and grandmothers throughout South Philadelphia. It was prepared every Sunday, early in the morning. Gravy had to simmer for at least four hours, for if it cooked for less than that, it was not done. Some neighborhoods smelled delightful due to the aroma generated by the simmering gravy. Anticipation of a great spaghetti dinner grew as time passed and the aromas stimulated one’s appetite. It was mandatory in our home that Sunday dinner was as close to noon as possible. The difference between gravy and sauce is that you cannot buy gravy at the Ack-a-me.

HARDWARE STORES. These had nothing to do with computers. Places like Albert’s, Katzen, Kaiser Brothers and Silver’s were where you went with a hardware problem. A broken faucet, lock, key or gah-zinta that had to be repaired or to have a component replaced, was brought to these stores. The experts like Albert, Chubby, Tom or Babe, were there to give advice and sell the necessary parts. A single washer, screw, nut or bolt, could be bought to fix your gah-zinta and was considered a sale. Time would be taken to satisfy the friend.

They were friends ... for as friends, they always came back and as friends, they were always welcome. By the way, do you know what a gah-zinta is? It is the thingy that gah-zinta the other piece.

CONGRESSMAN BOB BRADY hosted a jam-packed party at SugarHouse Casino at the opening night of the DNC. Brady’s party was a big success, with entertainment from JERRY BLAVAT and the DUPREES. Several big shots from Washington attended. They are also close friends of Bob. Among them were DEMOCRATIC HOUSE LEADER NANCY PELOSI and MINORITY WHIP STENY HOYER. Also in the house for the Congressman Brady’s event were US SEN. BOB CASEY as well as New Jersey gubernatorial hopeful and STATE SENATE PRESIDENT STEVE SWEENEY. Also on hand where STATE SENS. SHIRLEY KITCHEN and LARRY FARNESE, and State Senate candidate SHARIF STREET. Former multiple boxing-title holder BERNARD HOPKINS hung out with boxing promoter JOE HAND. Earlier that day, LT. GOV. MIKE STACK hosted a kickoff party to watch the Phillies vs. the Pirates game at McGillin’s Old Ale House on Drury Street. Many big shots from Pittsburgh attended the event, including COUNTY EXECUTIVE RICH FITZGERALD, CONGRESSMAN MIKE DOYLE and ALLEGHENY COUNTY DEMOCRATIC CHAIR NANCY MILLS. Also in attendance were STATE REPS. MIKE DRISCOLL of Northeast Philly and RYAN BIZARRO of Erie.

Obtaining The Democratic National Convention is a great accomplishment. It is a PLUS FOR OUR CITY. Then, out of the blue, comes an UGLY editorial attacking local Democratic hosts and office-holders. It noted that the city was cleaned up for the event, so if only they could clean up themselves! This ASSUMES the writer is PURE AS THE DRIVEN SNOW(?). It goes on with a litany of wrong-doing and naming of Philly POL names. It includes Rob McCORD and Kathleen KANE – who are not Philadelphians. It mentions Hillary’s declining numbers since the FBI Director was critical of her email handling. Do they miss the axiom that presidential races TIGHTEN UP? I do not see any LOVE FOR PHILADELPHIA in that editorial which appeared on the convention’s eve… I have often labeled Editorial Boards as ANACHRONISMS. Folks today have many media forms to consult and are well-informed. We do not need a ZEUS on high telling us how to live, andwhat to believe. A MONARCHY they are not. And they no longer possess the power to effect many changes, and maybe it frustrates them (?). Maybe we ought to ELECT an editorial board, and they could open their closet when they run. The posts were busy after that editorial, and most of the 900-some posters HAMMERED the editorial. Good.

Could a President TRUMP have a job for Rudy GIULIANI? At the very end of Rudy’s address to the GOP Convention, he told ISIS, “We are coming after you.” Did President Obama authorize him to say that, or does he seek that job in a Trump White House?... I am sorry our GOP State Chair has a “Bad feeling for Hillary” in our state. A feeling is not REALITY, however.

When Gov. CHRISTIE uttered, “LOCK HER UP,” I kept visualizing the GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE.... The DEM Convention seems to have met the F.O.P. LODGE 5 request with two law-enforcement speakers.

Resolution of the KANEFINA case was an end to a long night. So was the pay resolution for Kathleen KANE’S sister. As for prosecutors who say charges against KANE were not brought on by her exposing of PORN-GATE – I say, “Hmm.....” AND NOW the press will play up the Barbara HAFER matter.

Obama could have managed to avoid the boo birds for a number of reasons. It was a good speech that she wrote herself. She’s a popular person.

But if my Facebook and Twitter timelines were any indication, the reason Michelle Obama was able to praise Hillary Clinton without incurring the wrath others did is because no one had an umbrella big enough to withstand the wrath of the Black community raining down on their head.

You see, while President Barack Obama is popular, Michelle is even more so.

The conventional wisdom in the Black community is that one of the biggest reasons he got two terms in office was because he was smart enough to make her his wife.

And the fact that she’s unapologetically Black just seals the deal.

So if the boo birds had come for her, Black Twitter alone would have made a lot of people run for the Excedrin Migraine.

And while Bernie or Busters are passionate, they are not about that life.
