A SECOND AMERICAN CATALOGUE from PHIL ROGERS

Dear Collector, Contained within these pages is the second collection of pots that have been returned to me from the United States. A number of people have asked me to create another catalogue building on the success of the first one. For 14 years I sent more than 1400 of my best pieces to Boston. The relationship with the gallery there has ended and some of these pots have now found their way back to Rhayader. The pots featured here form a snapshot or retrospective look at the last 14 years as I have been careful to select what I consider good and interesting pieces from the entire period. For instance…there are some salt glazed pieces from both my salt kiln and the wood kiln when the second chamber was fired as a salt kiln. There are some jugs from my ‘Jug Show’ in 2006…some Shino pieces from the wood kiln and Tenmoku from my oil kiln. If any of these pieces are of interest to you I am pleased to say I can offer a 10% discount on the marked prices. I will pack and ship within the UK for free. Shipping overseas will be at cost only. Please email me marstonpottery@yahoo.co.uk with the number of the relevant item to reserve it.

PR1.

A jar/vase. A soft satin matt glaze over hakeme with iron brush pattern. 2007. 12.5 inches tall. ÂŁ420.00

PR2. A salt glazed faceted vase with ash glaze over the shoulder. 2005 11.5 inches tall. ÂŁ395.00

PR3 A three sided bottle with an impressed decoration. When making and firing salt glaze I came to enjoy the effect of salting ash glazes. The extra fluxing action of the sodium from the salt added texture to the ash glazes and would often create surfaces rich in colour and vitality. 2005 10.25 inches tall. ÂŁ295.00

PR4 A salt glazed box. I often used a dark, iron rich clay in the salt kiln in conjunction with a thick white slip. The technique was a kind of salt glazed Bunchong. This box has a hakeme pattern. 2003 3 inches tall. ÂŁ85.00

PR5 Three Yunomi. These three Yunomi are all fairly recent and…from left to right…….. 5a L. Tenmoku glaze with finger wiped decoration. 4 inches tall 5b 5c

Tenmoku with Nuka £95.00 each

4 inches tall.

PR6 A salt glazed and wood fired bottle. I have faceted the squared sides and then used a corrugated wire to emphasise the corners. Ash glazed over the shoulder. 2007 9.25 inches tall. ÂŁ310.00

PR7 A jug. Ash glazed and salt fired. Ridges with pellet decoration. 9.5 inches tall. ÂŁ160.00

PR8 A set of 6 ( +1 spare) salt glazed plates. Hakeme. These plates were fired in a stack of 7 each one separated from the one underneath by five cockle shells. The shadows left by the shells form a decorative motif. 2005. 7.75 inches across. ÂŁ295.00 ( all seven)

PR9. A Jar/vase with a paddled pattern. Tenmoku with Nuka. 2011 10 inches tall. ÂŁ320.00

PR 10.

A Jug. Pine ash glaze with a combed, incised and stamped decoration. 10.2 inches tall. ÂŁ220.00

PR 11. A set of six salt glazed bowls. Hakeme with shell patterns. These bowls were fired in the same way as the plates earlier in this catalogue. The shells leave behind a shadow that I have polished. The colours inside the bowls are a rich red, orange and tan. The bowls, just like the plates, are perfectly serviceable. 2005. 6.25 inches across. ÂŁ275.00 ( set)

PR 12. Two boxes. 12a Left.

Wood fired‌this box has a wax resist decoration. 2.75 inches tall.

12b

Right. Salt glazed box with hakeme. 3.5 inches tall. ÂŁ75.00 each.

PR 13. A faceted bottle. Nuka glaze. I have facted this bottle and then…using a roller…I have raised the edge of the facet creating a ‘bead’. After glazing, while the glaze is still wet, I wiped the glaze of the raised edge. Wood fired. 2011 12 inches tall. £375.00

PR 14. Wood fired bottle. The effects of the wood flame can clearly be seen. Ash glaze over the lip. 2003 12 inches tall. ÂŁ325.00

PR 15. A salt glazed bottle with an ash glaze. The typical salt glazed ‘orange peel’ can be seen at the bottom edge of this bottle. The extra fluidity apparent in the glaze is the result of the fluxing power of the sodium derived from the salt vapour. Wood fired. 2009. 9.75 inches tall. £275.00

PR16. A faceted bottle. Nuka glaze. I have wiped away the glaze on the edges of each facet to reveal a local red clay slip. 2009. 12 inches tall. ÂŁ295.00

PR17 A salt glazed and ash glazed Chawan fired in the salt glaze 2nd chamber of my wood kiln. I love the way the glaze had flowed and gathered on the ridges contrasting beautifully with the salt glazed surface at the bottom. 2009 4.75 inches across. ÂŁ150.00

PR 18. Tenmoku glazed bottle with a finger wipe decoration. 2011 10.25 inches ÂŁ250.00
