Welcome
TO THE L ATEST EDITION OF THE MICHAEL SPIERS BOOK
We've had a very exciting year at Michael Spiers. Our teams have been busy designing new jewellery collections including a fabulous range featuring natural pink diamonds (see page 48) and some superb vintage inspired emerald, ruby, sapphire and diamond pieces which you can see on page 64. Undoubtedly our proudest moment this year has been the opening of our new showrooms in Exeter, overlooking the iconic Exeter Cathedral. The store is simply stunning and features bespoke Rolex, Tag Heuer and Gucci areas. We also have a new designer Italian jewellery brand, Chimento, who we introduce on page 24. Inside this edition you can join Judi Spiers on a fascinating tour of Truro, Plymouth, Exeter and Taunton and hear stories from some of the stars of our company. We hope you enjoy this book as much as we did putting it together, and we look forward to welcoming you into our stores very soon.
Up to 36 months interest free credit on all jewellery and watches. Terms and conditions apply. Published by Peter Marshall, designed by Philip Donnelly, project managed by James Walker and photographed by Andrew Neilson.

xeter is the county town of Devon, as well as the home of Devon County Council, and suffered terribly at the hands of the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Much of the city centre was flattened, many of the historic buildings in the heart of the city were destroyed and others, including the Cathedral, were damaged. But plenty of it’s historic past remains: The Guildhall, which has medieval foundations, claims to be the oldest municipal building in England still in use; the medieval passages under Exeter High Street are a unique ancient monument and, as no similar system of passages can be explored by the public elsewhere in Britain, they attract thousands of visitors each year; the ‘House That Moved’, a 14th-century Tudor building, earned its name in 1961 when it was moved from its original location – weighing more than twenty one tonnes, it was strapped together and slowly moved a few inches at a time to its present-day position. Despite much opposition, the Princesshay shopping precinct was developed and opened in 2007, winning international awards. Approached by walkways and ancient alleyways from the High Street, it leads in turn to the heart of Exeter and a site that draws visitors like a >>

magnet from all over the world – Cathedral Green. Encompassing Cathedral Close and Yard, this dates back to the first and second centuries when the Romans first built their bathhouse. Here you will find the magnificent Cathedral, completed in 1400, with the longest uninterrupted, vaulted w w w. m i c h a e l s p i e r s . c o . u k
ceiling in England – but glance up at the northern side of the cathedral and you will spot Butch, the hound smoking a pipe! An unusual grotesque, Butch is based on a dog that frequented a pub in Exmouth in the 70’s and 80’s, and enjoyed a pipe of tobacco, along with its owner! You’ll also see Dido 30
the Seagull, Exeter City’s feathered mascot, immortalized in stone by a Cathedral mason – was said that the team always won when Dido landed on the Grecians’ pitch. There’s Mol’s Coffee House, opened in the 16th century, where it is reputed that Elizabethan seafarers such as Drake, Raleigh and Hawkins met to discuss their victory over the Armada. You will also find Abode, formerly the Royal Clarence built by William Mackworth Praed in 1769 as the Assembly Rooms, and credited as the first hotel in England. It is on this historic site of Cathedral Green that you will find the prestigious new showrooms of Michael Spiers Jewellers, previously the home of Lugets Gentleman’s Outfitters and Tailors who traded in the city for over 200 years. One of the stalwarts of the team in Exeter is a man who would not have been out of place in Lugets, as you will appreciate when you meet the dapper Tom Taylor! Tom joined the company 25 years ago, having been in the business for almost 20 years before that. For the first seven years he was at the Taunton branch. Over the years he has had some ‘odd’ experiences as he goes on to explain: “On one occasion, a young man came in to view a particular Rolex watch which I

duly showed him. Upon trying the watch on, he leapt up from the chair and ran to the door. I threw the chair at him and pursued him out of the door, running across the road in hot pursuit, flying across car bonnets like a scene from an action movie. Who would have thought selling jewellery could be so exciting? “After seven years, I joined Michael Spiers in Exeter – that iconic bay fronted building in Castle Street. I clearly remember the opening in 1999, a great fun day with lots of Champagne and various members of the Spiers family sneaking off over the cobbles to visit the wine bar, which was opposite the shop at the time. Whilst there, we were asked if we would mind being featured in a Rosamund Pilcher film… and I was asked to appear! The day came, I went to the shop suited and booted, hair perfect, a little blusher on the cheeks, then came the killer blow – they only wanted to film my hands! Good job my nails were looking good. “When we moved from the premises in Castle Street, after 16 years, it was a sad day and remembering to be at the shop for 7am on the Sunday, to move the safes each weighing three tonnes, also bought a tear to my eye. An all-day event but, eventually, we did it – they were in situ at 22 Cathedral Yard, a stunning setting right opposite the Cathedral.
Henry Slade, Exeter Chiefs
“Working for Michael Spiers over the years, I have experienced and enjoyed many of the parties and sporting events – such as sponsoring The Exeter Chiefs and presenting the player of the month with a watch. I am proud to be part of a 31
family business which succeeds in its quest for excellence. If they made a film of the Michael Spiers Story, I would pick Tom Cruise to play me – after all, we’re about the same height.”

here are 52 other Plymouths in the world but only one original. Attacked by the French in 1403, struck by the plague in 1627 and flattened by the Blitz in 1941, it is today a burgeoning city, which has seen many incarnations. Indeed, Plymouth’s city centre was heralded ‘beautiful’ and ‘heroic’ by TV’s Kevin McCloud – the writer and television presenter best known for his work on the Channel 4 series ‘Grand Designs’. When I was young, Plymouth’s schoolchildren were brought up on a diet of Sir Frances Drake, Scott of the Antarctic and Nancy Lady Astor …but as the comedian Jimmy Cricket says, ‘There’s more.’ How much more excited I would have been to know that: Sherlock Holmes was rumoured to have been based on Dr Budd – a colleague of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle at a medical practice at Durnford Street in Plymouth; or that Houdini challenged carpenters from nearby Devonport Naval Base to make a box from which he would not be able to escape – in his show at the Palace Theatre, he was nailed inside the box, but managed to escape within 12 minutes. So much has happened in recent years that will guarantee Plymouth a place in the history books of the future: >>

Plymouth University is a top 50 research institute in the UK, with 80 per cent of its work classed as either world leading or internationally significant; The Life Centre is one of the country’s leading centres of sporting excellence, and was an official pre-Olympic Games training camp for the Canadian diving and Lithuanian swimming teams; Plymouth born diver Tom Daley is one of Britain’s youngest ever Olympians. It’s not just Plymouth’s city centre that has seen massive redevelopment over the
years – The Royal William Yard, home to the largest collection of Grade 1 Listed Naval buildings in Europe, is now a cultural hotspot for bars, restaurants and art galleries. We can also be proud of the fact that we have the five Gold Anchor Award marinas – Sutton Harbour Marina, Mayflower Marina, Queen Anne’s Battery and Plymouth Yacht Haven – the second highest number in the UK. A board bearing one word was found in the burnt out and roofless shell of St Andrew’s church during the Blitz and, to 59
this day, can still be seen hanging over the north door – that word was ‘RESURGAM’ (I will rise again). Plymouth certainly did! 54 Cornwall Street, Plymouth is where you will find Michael Cox, director and the longest serving member of the company. Success wasn’t always on the cards however, due to what Michael describes as a ‘hiccup’ whilst studying design and jewellery making at Hornsey Art College! Michael then spent time running the Cox family hotel in Looe, before realising he was not suited to the hotelier's life. Enter a young Michael Spiers. The Cox tale continues in Michael’s own words: “Michael [Spiers] very kindly offered me a summer season job and I took up my place as salesman in the shop in Looe. At the time, the staff consisted of Michael, Joan Taylor and myself. We opened from 9am until 10pm, to catch the holidaymakers milling around Looe in the evenings. Our sales consisted mainly of silver charms – mostly lobster pots, sharks and of course Cornish piskies. Occasionally, we would sell a 9-carat gold cubic zirconia ring at a grand price of £5 which, in those days, we considered to be a very good sale! “After the first season, Michael opened a further shop in Polperro. though there was only me! Our business consisted of the daily visit of coaches to Polperro, mainly occupied by pensioners. Again, our main sales were silver charms, rolled gold bracelets and 9 carat gold cubic zirconia rings, with the occasional Garnet ring thrown in. “The following year, Keith White, Michael's brother in law, joined the company. Keith and I would open the shop in the morning, clean the windows, hoover the floors, clean the counters, wash the arcade, take stock out of the safe, dress the windows, serve the customers, stock the items, clean the items, sell the items, remove them from the window at the end of the day and finish at any time between 6pm and 7pm! “We ran the Polperro shop for a good number of years and then, realising that it was summer trade only – which left us with nothing to occupy our time in the winter – it was decided to open a city shop. We took over what was the Target Fashion shop in Cornwall Street, Plymouth. The windows and shop were fitted out with great style and panache. “Eventually, things really began to take off – at Christmas time we would be so busy that we had to call on the whole family to come and work in the shop serving
customers: Doc and Faye (Michael Spiers’ parents) Rita, Keith and myself, together with Michael and a couple of sales staff. Cornwall Street became a great success and I became a Director of Michael Spiers Limited. “When Michael was sadly taken ill and his health took a turn for the worse, his son Adam, a Chartered Accountant working abroad, decided to return home to spend some time with his father and help with the running of the business. Adam learnt the ropes in the 61
Looe shop. He later went on to join us here in Plymouth, which has been great for the business. Both Keith and I relish his input and we have continued to see the business grow and go from strength to strength. “We are all very proud that Michael Spiers has expanded in the way that it has. The Company went on to purchase Bowdens on Royal Parade and took over Wigfalls, and Nelsons the jewellers – companies which, when we first opened in Plymouth, >>

we looked up to, as these were the established County jewellers who had been trading for ever and a day. Now they were under the banner of Michael Spiers Jewellers. “After a good number of years on the hop floor in retail, I decided that I wanted to make a change in direction, and discussed with Michael the possibility of opening our own manufacturing business. I felt, at the time, some of the jewellery that we were offered, lacked the finish, style and quality that we wanted to offer our clients. Michael gave me great encouragement in this direction and arranged for me to go to London and spend time in the London Diamond Bourse. Here I was fortunate enough to be introduced to one of this country’s leading diamond experts and merchants, who is now world famous within our industry – Moshe Frei. Moshe Frei survived the holocaust in Germany as one of the children rescued by Oskar Schindler. He was truly a remarkable man. “The manufacturing of the Michael Spiers collection of jewellery was an instant success, and was then followed up by a range of coloured gem pieces. Michael and I travelled to Thailand, on a buying trip, and spent weeks going to all of the stone dealers in Bangkok – occasionally I still travel to the Far East to buy gemstones.

I have also had the honour of acting as a judge at IJL (International Jewellery London – the UK’s most established jewellery trade show) for the International Platinum Guild, for new and up and coming designers. This year, 2015, is important to both Keith and myself, as we celebrate 50 years of working together. Neither of us can believe where the years have gone. Sometimes, we stand back and 63
laugh when we interview new people coming into the business who look at the shops today and say, ‘Wow, what a glamorous business to be in!’ We only wish they had seen us in the early days, when we would be out with a bucket, sponge, mop and vacuum cleaner, doing all the mundane jobs. “However, as co-directors, I am sure Keith would agree that we are still very hands on and still involve ourselves in every aspect of the business. Well perhaps not the mop and bucket bit!”

TOWN ON THE RIVER TONE
Taunton, the county town of Somerset, nestles in the Vale of Taunton – an area of outstanding natural beauty between the Quantock, Blackdown and Brendon Hills. Home to Somerset County Cricket Club’s County Ground and 40 Commando Royal Marines, its military and religious history stretches back over 1000 years and includes a monastery built in the 10th century, and Taunton Castle which has origins in the Anglo Saxon period. w w w. m i c h a e l s p i e r s . c o . u k

he city planners have been mindful of Taunton’s history, handling retail development sensitively to retain much of the city’s architectural heritage. The High Street, shopping centres and historic riverside areas all offer ample choice, with plenty of parking and open spaces, so it’s not surprising that this is where Somerset people come to shop, eat and be entertained. But it’s not Taunton’s past that has thrust it into the world spotlight in recent years – despite the number of historical, military and cricketing figures associated with the town – it’s ‘celebs’! In 2012 Sir Elton John hosted an open air concert at the Somerset County Cricket Ground to a sell-out crowd of 23,000 – dedicating one of his songs to Ian Botham, who was watching from his namesake pavilion. In the same year Taunton welcomed the arrival of the Olympic Torch, borne aloft by a ‘Black Eyed Pea’ one will.i.am! Bill Bailey makes mention of the town in his stand-up DVD, Part Troll, claiming to have taken part in a teleportation experiment sponsored by Taunton cider, and in literature, Thomas Hardy gave it the fictitious name of Toneborough, John Le Carre refers to it in the excellent ‘Tinker Tailor Spy’ – as does Kazuo Ishiguro in ‘The Remains of the Day’ – and >>

So Taunton, the first town in the country to be lit permanently by electric street lighting, (in 1881) is still shining brightly! It was desperately old fashioned – especially to a 19 year old who thought himself quite the man about town in his brown pinstripe suit, complete with fashionably wide lapels and flared trousers. “Miss Smith and Mr Charlton ran the shop in those days and they did teach me a lot about >>

the trade but I could be a bit irreverent – one day Miss Smith sat down in one of the office’s canvas chairs and it split. She ended up wedged, with her bottom on the carpet and her legs stuck in the air! “The shop was later sold to Mr & Mrs Leath, and this ushered in a new world. Already the owners of two other jewellers, they created a much more boutique type of store, with more exciting stock than previously. We were then living in the boom time of the 1980’s. Mr Leath was a bit of a 92
character and also was a brilliant salesman. I was happy, having at last been made a manager, and Mr Leath tried to insist that I was a yuppie – I wasn’t quite convinced, although I did dress in the obligatory baggy suits. “It was at this time that I was introduced to valuing and, although it took me away

from the customers to the bowels of the back office, it was something I enjoyed and continued to do for many years afterwards. “1989 ushered in a new era. One day two unfamiliar gentlemen appeared in the shop and it soon transpired that they were to be my new bosses. This was the first time I would meet Mr Michael Spiers and Mr Keith White. The two of them had started the Michael Spiers business and had, by this stage, built up quite a reputation in the West Country as a brand to be trusted. It was obvious from the start that these people did things differently: I would soon get used to having access to all of the company’s facilities, including our own workshop, which I didn’t have before. “Mr White visited us on a regular basis. Sometimes he made Alan Sugar look like a pussycat but I soon realised why the business was so successful – and why the Spiers brand has such a reputation. “Michael Spiers himself would always visit Taunton at Christmas, travelling up on the train each day. He said he looked forward to it and loved the atmosphere in our shop. “Customers come to us for the wonderful selection of jewellery on offer, but

also for the service they receive – this has always been at the core of what we offer and, luckily, this has always come as second nature to me. Spending time with people who visit the shop is still the most rewarding part of the job and I hope, in this way, I have inspired the people I have worked with over the years. “There have been many highlights during my career, one of which must be the acquisition of the Rolex watch brand, soon 93
after ‘Michael Spiers’ took over the shop. This was a great success, as anticipated, and took the shop to a new level. “We completed an extensive re-fit a couple of years ago. This brought the shop up to date and provided for a dedicated Rolex area. At the same time we were, at last, re-branded as ‘Michael Spiers’ and are, therefore, no longer the ‘odd one out’ in the company.

Truro I Judi Spiers
Truro is Cornwall’s only city.
It became a city in 1877 – long after Exeter, but more than 50 years before Plymouth was given the same honour. It wasn’t actually the first choice for a capital, or the second. It

apparently became the cultural home of Cornwall when Lostwithiel and Launceston handed over the reigns.

nitially, Truro grew as an important centre of trade through it’s port, and then developed further as a ‘stannery’ town for the mining industry. In the 18th and 19th centuries Truro became known as the ‘London of Cornwall’ – a centre for fashionable, wealthy and influential people. Nowadays, it still retains much of it’s Georgian architecture and narrow alley ways (Squeeze Guts Alley in particular never ceases to amuse visitors) and, together with the Lemon Quay Piazza development, draws people from all over the county for the shopping and entertainment. It’s not just in architecture that old and new sit happily together in Truro. When it comes to food and drink there is a wide and wild choice. The Hubbox, for instance, was recently named in a book featuring some of the most unusual and spectacular restaurant interiors around the world! Originally sited in a shipping container, it now sits happily in a 19th century Wesleyan chapel. For the more genteel, there is the Victorian splendour of Charlotte’s Teahouse – where tea is served in bone china with plates of scones and other dainties! >>

Truro Cathedral
Wherever you are in Truro, you can’t fail to see the Cathedral as it is rarely out of sight. A good tip apparently, if you want a photograph, is to stop off on the A390 (entering the town from the A30), as it’s three spires dominate the skyline at that point. It is well worth entering those hallowed portals as well – take a moment to glance up to the ceiling of St Mary’s Aisle, where you will see the Joseph Emidy architectural boss. Joseph Emidy was an African violinist, born in 1775, who spent his early life in slavery – press ganged into a life at sea, he eventually arrived in Truro, where he rose to become a celebrated musician, composer and teacher – and led the Truro Philharmonic Orchestra in performances. Other notables from Truro include, of course, Roger Taylor – the drummer of Queen, and James Marsh – the British film and documentary director, best known for his multi-award winning biopic of physicist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, whilst the novelist Robert Goddard; Barbara Joyce West – second to last survivor of the Titanic – and Henry Louis Gibson – an expert in the medical uses of infrared and pioneer of its use in detecting breast cancer, all have Truro on their birth certificates. >>

Bandstand, Victoria Gardens
To 82 Lemon Street – where you will find Michael Spiers Truro – opened by my good self (Judi Spiers) and my Westward television on-screen partner, David Rodgers, back in the summer of ‘79. As I remember, we stopped the traffic that day arriving in an open top vintage car! Originally a gown shop, the interior still had a ‘booth’ where the accounts were settled and what was known as a
‘cash-railway’ – a pulley system that ferried the money across the ceiling of the shop. The elegance and style has been retained but now the store also reflects the more contemporary feel of the company. For many years Stephen Spiers – younger brother to Michael and I, who sadly died in February 2015 – ran Lemon Street. His ‘protégé’ and friend, James Walker, now not only looks after Lemon Street but is 105
also the company’s Group Manager. No longer the young lad employed through the governments Youth Training Scheme, James is now 46 and has been married to Lisa for 10 years, with two beautiful girls – Scarlet and Tula. Here, James shares his memories of life on Lemon Street: “The first time I heard the name Michael Spiers was in 1986. I had been working my summer job, on a car park at St Ives, earning a heady £1.25 an hour. I returned home one evening, after a day of slaving over a hot car park, to be told that I was going to be applying for a job. Apparently, my parents had been looking on my behalf! “The job was as a sales assistant at Michael Spiers...a jewellers! A jewellers? I’d never even looked in a jewellery window in my life. I’d passed Michael Spiers, but only on my way to buy the latest record from Adam And The Ants. “My father took me on a shopping trip to Truro, where I was ‘treated’ to an interview outfit. I remember it like it was yesterday – my 18 year old self would be attending the interview dressed like a 70-year-old excolonel, in Prince of Wales check trousers, burgundy striped shirt, Paisley tie and navy blue blazer with gold buttons. >>

“Well, it did the trick. Stephen Spiers interviewed me and he gave me the job on the spot! It was the first time I had met him and I was, frankly, terrified! I was truly a fish out of water, but was welcomed warmly by the team in Truro. Stephen would appear at around 10 every morning, and position himself on the Chesterfield over looking the store. Members of staff sprang into action, one disappearing downstairs to make him coffee, another flying out the door to get him a paper.
“I think it fair to say Stephen favoured the ‘Basil Fawlty School of Management’ and would quite happily order difficult or rude customers out of the shop if he saw fit! He hated my long hair and tried to get me to cut it off – I refused. He insisted I tie it back, which I did, adding ‘if you don’t cut it, you have to wear a ribbon in it’ – I wore a ribbon for several hours before he shouted ‘take that bl**dy ribbon out of your hair!’ I did eventually have it all cut off, but for a girl… not Stephen! 107
“The first time I met Michael Spiers was almost a disaster. Just before he arrived, I came upstairs onto the shop floor and, as I closed the door, I inadvertently locked it – beyond the door were the safes, customers repairs and sales, pretty much everything we needed for a successful day of trading. Stephen knew what to do, with a smile he pulled the carpet up from the floor, revealing a hidden trap door, and ‘helpfully’ lowered me down into the basement (known fondly by staff as ‘the dungeon’) and no sooner had my feet touched the ground I was plunged into darkness, as the trap door was closed and the carpet rolled back. “At this point, I realised that a further door between the dungeon and the inner basement was locked from the other side – I was trapped, I am claustrophobic, I did panic! After what seemed like half an hour, light flooded into the basement as the door opened...Michael Spiers looked around the door, to be greeted by a red faced, shirtless, sweating new employee, ‘Ahh, you must be James?’ he said, with that same Spiers smile! It turned out that Michael had successfully ‘picked’ the lock upstairs and come down and opened the basement door. “Over the years, I have taken on many different roles, including dressing the >>
windows with Rita – sister of Michael, Stephen and Judi. A professional window dresser for years, she is hugely creative and has an amazing eye for display – and that great Spiers sense of humour. I always remember her telling me that, when she worked in the West End of London, she would occasionally get the odd man approaching the window late at night, exposing a little more than he should… she would always point and laugh, ‘that got rid of them’ she said! I am happy to report we have never had to contend with anything similar in Truro! “Stephen became my mentor, teaching me everything about the jewellery trade. His honesty and straight down the line approach was invaluable to my learning. My life, and the job, is very different now – travelling around the company as Group Manager, I am a different person to the young man who sat opposite Stephen all those years ago. The constant through my life has been working for the Spiers family, and it’s been full of fun and hard work. "Stephen died in 2015, and I lost my friend, colleague, mentor and sounding board. I miss him, and not a day goes by when I don’t wish I could ask him a question, or his opinion on something. 27 years have just zoomed by! w w w. m i c h a e l s p i e r s . c o . u k
