AROUND ONE The concept for the audioÂť
We opened a platform on the internet, so people could send sound samples (100% original) to be used in the project. These sounds were reengineered and composed to create a sound tissue. Two composers were invited to do this filtering of the sounds and each of them created one music. These musics/sound textures, were later produced and performed for vinyl record - Around One - a 300 limited edition. A visual artist was invited to work on the cover design of the record and these 300 copies are numbered and signed and they are to be an independent piece of work besides the performance /installation AROUND ONE. 500 units of the record were made (which is the minimum in the disc industry), so for the launching of the 300 limited edition I invited two visual artists to "destroy" the 200 "extra" records. So we created another layer Âť A performance where each artist destroyed 100 records = 200. This took place at the open air stage in Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and was witnessed by an audience. Catarina Campino created "Drum solo works" by destroying the records as they were part of the drums of a rock n'roll band. Paulo Seabra created "recycle for art" by printing the titles of songs in the record itseli In doing so, people couldn't listen to the record anymore. This way we underlined the fact that only 300 units were available from the limited edition. Paulo Seabra is also the cover designer for the vinyl record AROUND ONE.
In AROUND ONE performance /installation the audience can input sound by playing the records. There are two record players in the installation Âť one is to listen and another one is to input sound in the performance space.
