Group 4 Diploma Choices February 2016
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Experimental Sciences Group 5 Group 6 Options (possible other science)
Biology Chemistry Computer Science Design Technology Physics Sport, Exercise & Health Science (SEHS)
Higher Level Choices
Biology Chemistry Computer Science Design Technology Environmental Systems & Societies (ESS) NIST Applied Science Physics Sports, Exercise & Health Science (SEHS)
Standard Level Choices
Biology and Chemistry are also in group 6. But you wouldn’t be able to choose a second humanities subject And you couldn’t take Music, Art or Drama There might be an option for DT in group 6 if there is enough demand
You can take 2 Sciences
Higher level has more content and covers some topics to a greater depth than standard level.
Higher and Standard Level Comparison
Diploma exams test your knowledge and understanding. This will be a large part of your grade. There are still investigations but these are a smaller part of your grade. Organisation and study skills are necessary for success!
MYP and DP Comparison
There are subject requirements for careers depending on some universities. Talk to your counsellor if you are thinking of careers in: Architecture Marine Biology Engineering Science majors Medicine Psychology Dentistry Subject Requirements
Career Choices
It is recommended that if you take a Science at higher level then you should get an MYP grade 5/7 or higher. Same for Design. Computer Science and Physics require strong math skills. Higher level subjects

Brief overview of options
Biology Higher and Standard Level Why should you take this subject? Biology is the study of life - what could be more interesting than that? Taking a primarily human perspective, it explores the molecular biochemistry of organisms, the interacting systems within an organism and interactions between organisms and their environment. A good understanding of Biology provides an important foundation for understanding the world in which we live.
Biology Higher and Standard Level What skills does a student need to have to be successful in Biology? ● Gather and record information and organize it into effective study notes, ● Ask questions and participate in class discussions, ● Collaborate with peers, ● Conduct research and investigations, ● Develop and deliver presentations, and ● Be CRITICAL of the knowledge explored.
You have the option of Biology in Group 4 or Group 6
Chemistry Higher and Standard Level Why should you take this subject? Chemistry is an experimental science that combines academic study with the acquisition of practical and investigational skills.
Chemistry Higher and Standard Level What skills does a student need to have to be successful in Chemistry? ● ● ● ●
Analytical reasoning Mathematical reasoning Spatial reasoning Write formulas and balance chemical equations ● Communicate clearly and precisely in appropriate academic English ● Ability to comprehend, recall and express abstract concepts You have the option ● of Chemistry in Group 4 or Group 6
