QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR STUDENTS

We have listed below some common questions students ask and the answers they need to know about the Year 11/12 Pathway to University program at Phoenix Academy. Year 11/12 Pathway to University Assessment Handbook (1) How can I enter the Year 11/12 Pathway to University program at Phoenix and how long is it? Answer: Anyone who has completed 10, 11 or 12 years of formal education is eligible to enter our Year 11/12, Diploma Pathway to University program. Students who have completed 10 years will generally need to complete the 60‐week program. Students who have completed 11 years will generally need to complete the 48‐week program. Academically strong Year 11 students may be eligible for the accelerated 36‐week course. Those who have completed 12 years of education and have weak grades can do the –24‐week Fast Track course. Those who have completed 12 years of education with good grades can directly enter the Diploma‐University Ready, 24‐week course. Recognised prior learning (RPL) will determine how much advanced standing is awarded. The Admissions Office determines this once your most recent academic transcripts have been received and reviewed. (2) If my mother tongue is not English what English language requirements are there? Answer: You must have a language score of IELTS 5.0 or equivalent to enter the Year 11/12 program. If you don’t have an IELTS score you will need to do the Phoenix Academy E test (Language Proficiency test) on line. You can complete this test in your own country and there is no charge to do it. Once we test your language level we will recommend how many weeks of Academic English (EAP) you may require before you commence your Year 11/12 Program. (3) What is the cost for tuition for the Year 11/12 course for 2012? Answer: It depends on the length of the course you require. The cost for the 24 week program is AUD$10,000 for International students (non Australian citizens) and for Australian citizens and PR the cost is AUD$5,000. The cost for 36 weeks is AUD$15,000. For International students (non Australian citizens) and for Australian citizens and PR the cost is AUD$7,500


(4) What are the commencement dates for Year 11/12 Studies? Answer: There are four commencements every year. They are January, April, July and October. (5) Will my Year 11/12 result be recognised by Australian universities? Answer: Your Year 11/12 Pathway to University course is in fact an accredited Certificate IV under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) The Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation. The AQF is an Australian National standard qualification that is recognised as being the level required to enter university studies in Australia. You will not however be eligible to enter degree programs that are Science or Mathematics based such as Engineering or Science based courses. The universities where Phoenix has direct articulation are Curtin University, Murdoch University, Edith Cowan University, Monash University, La Trobe University and Bond University. TAFE also recognises our Year 11/12 program for direct entry into their Certificate IV and Diploma programs (6) Do I have to sit for a final examination at the end of the Year 11/12 Pathways to University Course? Answer: The Year 11/12 Pathways to University course is assessed through continuous assessment however every 12 weeks there are a set of assessments conducted in class that assess the outcomes of that period of learning. Also every week during the course you will have to complete tasks set by your lecturers and tutors. There will be small tests during the course. You will be advised very early in the course if you are not likely to pass. External moderators from Western Australian training providers are appointed to moderate our students’ work. (7) What subjects will I study in the Year 11/12 Pathway to University Course? Answer: The Phoenix Year 11/12 Pathway to University Course is designed for students wishing to enter the disciplines of Business, Management, Finance, Commerce, E Commerce, Economics, Communication, Arts, Health, Education, Law and Environmental Studies. The subjects studied are Communications, Computing for Academic Purposes, Mathematics, Economics and Accounting. There are 22‐23 hours of contact time each week so the course is very intensive. (8) What learning support will be available to me during my Year 11/12 course? Answer: Phoenix has a student learning management system (portal) that supports learning. Students are encouraged to visit the portal on a daily basis to chat with their lecturers and to seek assistance to assist understanding. All lecture notes are downloaded onto the portal after each class so students can revisit the lecture or catch up if a class is missed due to illness. All assessments and learning tasks are loaded onto the portal each week.
