The first factory, Wuxi Phoenix Artist Materials Co., Ltd. built in 2002 in Wuxi, in the south of Jiangsu province ,specializes in high quality stretched canvas. The second one, Shuyang Phoenix Artist Materials Co., Ltd, built in 2004 in Shuyang in the north of Jiangsu province, specializes in the manufacture of medium and economic quality stretched canvas.

Shuyang Phoenix Paint Co., Ltd. a factory established in 2004 is the third professional artist paint production base in China, employing both specialists and production facilities from Europe.

Introduction of Artist Canvas Phoenix artist canvas is made from high quality and special formulated primer, which is suitable for oil painting, acrylic painting and some other mediums. There are four series of canvases: Pure Linen Canvas, Mixed Linen Canvas, Pure Cotton Canvas and Cotton-polyester Mixed Canvas. There are three different types of primer: absorbent,semiabsorbent and oil applying with rough,sandy and smooth texture. Besides, Phoenix also provides artist canvas with special formulated primer which applies to professional acrylic and watercolor paintings. Phoenix canvas, approved by CE and EN71 Quality System Certification, conforms to all the international safety standards.

HOW PHOENIX PRODUCES HIGH QUALITY CANVAS Phoenix Artist Materials has been producing high quality canvas and stretched canvas for more than twenty years. Since 1995, we have gained more and more customers'trusts.

PRODUCTION PROCESS OF CANVAS: Phoenix artist canvases are made from the fine quality long-staple cotton and/or long stem flax from Sinkiang and Harbin China, India, Belgium, etc. Strict inspection has been done to the woven fabric to count the defects per square meter of the gray fabric, test the tension strength of the yarn, and measure the gram weight of the canvas and thread count as well. Gray fabric which complies with the standard will flow to the coating assembly line. There are 4 layers of primer on the canvas, and each layer of primer has different formulation and function. The first transparent glue can fill up the pinholes of the fabric to prevent the second, third and fourth layer of primer penetrating the canvas; after drying, second layer of primer (ground coating) can be applied to the canvas; after another drying, third layer of primer (face coating) will be applied to the canvas and drying too. The fourth layer of primer (face coating) can be done according to the characteristic of the canvas and the customers'requirements. After four times of coating and drying, canvasneeds to be polished to get rid of some nodes and grains to ensure the arenaceous surface of the canvas. Polished canvas will be rolled in different length depending on the requirements of customers: 10 meters/roll, 50meters/roll, 200 meters/roll or even longer.

PHOENIX ARTIST CANVAS PRODUCT SERIES Pure Linen Canvas PURE LINEN CANVAS is made from the fine quality long stem flax from Belgium, which is naturally dried after soaking without rinsed by any alkaline chemicals. It touches soft with flexibility and has even lustrous surface. High quality primer is applies to each layer keeping excellent pliability and tension either in the cold winter of northern Europe, or in the hot equator area. The primer does not crumble or crack and is nonyellowing for a long time under the sun. The special formulated grounding glue for linen canvas can prevent the oil paint penetrating the canvas or the corroding by humidity. The paintings therefore can last over 100 years. The half absorbency and fine texture of linen canvas give the paint color superior adsorbability while not easily falls off from the canvas.

How to Choose Canvas Texture The unique coating with patented technique resists the direct touch between fabrics and oil from paints, extending the life of the artwork. High quality primer keeps the surface excellent pliability and tension either in the cold winter or hot summer. The primer does not crumble or crack.

PRODUCT FEATURES 1. High quality acrylic primer, neutral non-toxic, half absorbency ground, suitable for oil and acrylic 2. Fine texture surface with full coverage primer 3. Even grains on surface perform eggshell texture with excellent brushstroke and paint absorbency. 4. The first flexible transparent glue can penetrate deeply into fabrics and compound with second layer. 5. The resin disperses evenly in the primer which increases the adhere of primer. Surface primer contains strong absorbant powder with stoma which strengthening the compound of paints and primer.

Coarse grain

The mixed linen canvas is made from the fine quality long stem flax and high grade long-staple cotton, which is naturally dried after soaking without rinsed by any alkaline chemicals. It keeps the linen tension strength as well as the pliability of long-staple cotton. The unique ground coating with patented technique assures fine texture of surface with better tension strength and pliability. Ideal for high qualiy oil painting.

Pure Cotton Canvas Pure cotton canvas is made from high grade long-staple cotton from west region in China. Not been rinsed by any alkaline chemicals, it keeps the natural tone and the fiber flexibility of the cotton yarns with high tension strength. The unique ground coating with patented technique resists the direct touch between fabrics and oil from paints, extending the life of the artwork. High quality primer keeps the surface excellent pliability and tension either in the cold winter or hot summer. The primer does not crumble or crack. Ideal for beginners and students.

Cotton-polyester Mixed Canvas cotton-polyester canvas is made from fine quality long fiber cotton yarn and polyester fiber Mixed woven. Advanced pretreatment technics create higher strength than pure cotton.

6. Special formulation ensures the firm structure of primer. The surface layer does not fall off in touch with water, linseed oil or solvent turpentine. 7. The 4-layer coating canvas is resistant to oil or water and does not crack. The proper oil and water absorbency can still be preserved to guarantee short dry time of paints. The resin in the primer guarantees the vivid color and stability. 8. Scientifical formulation ensures primer and paints with same ageing degree. The artwork can last long life.

Introduction of Phoenix Stretched Canvas Originated in 1988, with more than 20 years history, phoenix produces the best quality stretched canvas in China. The products have been approved by CE, MTL-ACTS and EN71 certificates. Phoenix is the most professional canvas manufacturer with a wide range of canvas, consisting of all types of canvas from different countries. Phoenix series of stretched canvas has three different grades: economic one, suitable for students and learners; medium one, suitable for amateurs; and professional one, suitable for artists.

STRETCHED CANVAS

HOW PHOENIX PRODUCES HIGH QUALITY STRETCHED CANVAS PRODUCTION PROCESS OF STRETCHED CANVAS: Phoenix artist stretched canvas is made with high quality pine wood, paulownia and the like from Northeast and Central China, America, Canada, New Zealand and some other countries. After thermophilic digestion, degreasing, kiln-drying, these raw materials are made into stretched bars in different sizes as required by Phoenix, and then enter into the company's warehouse. Each group of timber needs to be inspected strictly to check whether the moisture content complies with the standard, and whether there is any mouldiness, wormhole or dead knot. So as to ensure qualified timber be processed to next step. According to the order's specification, experienced woodworkers handle the timber with precision, tenonning and then polishing the timber to be smooth. QC personnel will check the cater-corners and the length of each side for all finished frames to ensure the preciseness of the size. Workers, who are responsible for cutting canvas, calculate and cut the canvas regarding to the size of frame and width of canvas roll. Canvas can be selected relying on the quality standard during cutting, making sure the fabric dots on every square meter does not exceed the specified standard. When stretching the canvas, besides simply driving in nails, we pay great attention to two points: first, tight degrees: stretched canvas with fine quality will sounds like drum-banging when it is beaten on the surface; second, four wrapped corners: normally our wrapped corners are made by hand, which looks more professional and more neat. After the stretching, QC personnel have to do three important things to test the stretched canvas. Firstly, evenness: put the stretched canvas on a horizontal tabletop and finger pressing each corner, if the bend degree of the across corner exceeds the limitation, it will be reworked; secondly, checking the length of diagonal line and each side: during the stretching, stretcher bars could be out of shape because of the outside force. Thus, after the stretching, recheck the length of diagonal line and each side is very important. If the measuring result failed, the stretched canvas will be reworked; thirdly, check the straightness of stretched canvas' four sides. During the stretching, stretcher bars tends to incurve under the action of outside force, especially the large size stretched canvas. We can say that this step is very important too. If the measuring result exceeds the limitation, the stretched canvas needs to be reworked as well.

After the above strict inspection, we will start the packaging of stretched canvas. First of all, cutting edge, which is neat cutting the redundant canvas at the back of the frame which was broken by canvas clamp; secondly, put in wooden wedges which match with the tongue-and-groove, and the label as well; thirdly, inspect and clean stains on the canvas, then shrinking. After the third step, QC personnel will inspect each stretched canvas before they are packed into cartons. They need to know whether there are any stains, whether the stretcher bars are bended, whether the canvas are tighten, and whether the appearance of package is good or not. The stretched canvas can't be packed into cartons unless all of the above steps are done. Canvas and stretched canvas are used in the creation of artist. Although it looks like they can be made easily, it is not easy to do well. Phoenix Artist Materials is acting in the spirit of "all for arts." If the stretched canvas becomes loose, we can use the wooden wedges to re-tighten the canvas: 1) Remove the staples at the 4 corners on the back of the stetched canvas by screwdriver. 2) Insert the wedges into the 4 corners as attached picture. 3) Hammer the wedges lightly, enabling the bars extending outward, until the canvas are re-tight enough.

PRODUCTION PROCESS OF CANVAS PANEL:

Phoenix Artist Materials produced canvas panels, whose core boards are made of high quality ribbed plates and double grey boards from Shandong and Canton China. Before the transportation to the material warehouse, these raw materials had been high-temperature pressed and dried then processed into paper boards with different thickness according to the needs of Phoenix. Strict inspections had been done to each group of these paper boards. The main purpose is to confirm whether the moisture content complies with the standard or not. Also, to ensure the inexistence of the signs of mould, warp and deformation, etc., making sure that only qualified paper boards can enter into next production process. Experienced board cutting workers handle the core boards with precision machining, cutting into various shapes required by the specifications. QC personnel will inspect the finished core boards to guarantee that the four corners are right angles, two diagonal lines are in the same length and the dimensions are accurate. Workers, who are responsible for tailoring canvas, calculate and cut the canvas regarding to the size of canvas panel. Canvas can be selected relying on the quality standard during tailoring, making sure that node number on every square meter does not exceed the specified standard. When paste up the board with canvas, we must pay special attention to the following points: firstly, to ensure the core board being seated in the middle of canvas with glue, and the four sides evenly folded up to cover the core board; secondly, four sides of the canvas should stick to the core board without any air bubbles, making sure that four corners are wrapped perfectly and professionally. Canvas paste up will follow by labeling. Now we need to notice that: first, label with glue at the back should evenly ground on the four sides of the board without any skew which could affect the appearance; second, when canvas panel going through veneer press with workers hands pressing on the label, crimples and air bubbles can not be left on the label affecting the appearance. After labeling, the next step is canvas panel cleaning. Because of the above two steps, canvas paste up and labeling, stains could be found on the panel and the label. So that canvas panel has to be cleaned up. After being dried, QC personnel should inspect the moisture content of the clean canvas panel to find out whether it complies with the standard. Last step is packaging. The qualified canvas panel will be placed into a poly bag and then sealed. According to the requirements of customers, canvas panels can be packed into single piece, two pieces and three pieces set and the like. After the vacuum forming, QC personnel will have a comprehensive inspection on the canvas panel, ensuring the inexistence of stains, warp and deformation, the good looking of the packaging and so on. After all these jobs being done, canvas panels can be packed into cartons for the transportation.
