Welcome to Phoenix Auctions No.11, Saturday 4th February 2012 Welcome to both our 1st and 2nd auction for 2012.

How can we have our 1st & 2nd auctions at the same time? Well it’s easy when our first new BOX LOT auction is held the day before. You will have noticed that we have sent you an additional small catalogue. This is our first BOX LOT auction! In future these will only be sent to those clients who have requested these catalogues. If you don’t ask for them, they won’t be sent to you. Naturally it is always available to everyone on our website.

So what is a box lot? These are the mixed or jumbled lots, groups of partly-picked albums and stockbooks or accessories and stamp magazines. They often come in suitcases or cartons and they are almost always disorganized. Typically they will have an estimate of $100, with a simple description and frequently they will have a low or no reserve.

The other sort of lot you will find will be postage lots.

Why have we created a separate BOX LOT auction? Firstly this will reduce the size of our normal public auctions, so our auction day will not be quite as long as they have been. Secondly a small unillustrated separate catalogue helps to keep our production costs down. Thirdly these sorts of lots generally only appeal to local buyers and that will keep our postage costs down as well. And last of all, small frequent auctions ensure that these lots will move though the system quickly without taking up valuable storage space for months.

Who can bid? Well anyone can, as long as they are prepared to either collect the lots themselves or pay for the postage and packaging costs, which because of the size of most of these lots, is likely to be significant.

When will BOX LOT auctions be held? Whenever possible they will be scheduled at 4pm on the afternoon before our normal public auction. This ensures that viewing for both auctions can be done with one trip to our viewing rooms. However when we have sufficient lots we will also hold these auctions independently of our public auctions. And, of course, there will still be viewing available when that happens.

How many lots will be in a BOX LOT auction? We currently expect these auctions to be about 200 lots each and this means that they will only take an hour or so to auction.

How can I bid in these BOX LOT auctions? As these are held as a public auction you can bid in the room, by post, email, through the website. In fact you can bid exactly the same way you do with our normal public auctions.

Are we accepting vendor materials specifically for these auctions? Well of course we are and we will discount our vendor commission if you accept the risk of the lots being offered at no reserve.

BOX LOT auctions will not be an ever-growing list of “supplementary” or “late” lots. It will be a proper catalogue which will be mailed out about 2 weeks before the auction. You will be able to view a week before the auction and bid on auction day knowing that extra lots have not been added after you viewed.

To avoid confusion, when we have 2 consecutive auctions, the BOX LOT auction lot numbers will

Page 4 Phoenix Auctions - Saturday 4th February 2012 begin at 9001 and they will have a separate auction number. Our first BOX LOT auction is number 1201 (the first auction in 2012).

So remember that if you like to fossick or hunt for that gem that everyone else has missed or you could use a bit of cheap postage then these auctions are for YOU. Remember to receive these catalogues you must request them.

About Auction 11 With only 1908 lots this auction is marginally smaller than our last few auctions and it is still packed with our normal full range of items from small single lots to multi-thousand dollar gems suitable for even the most advanced collector.

Our Rest of World sections are always popular and the selection in this auction will be no exception. The high-end British items are particularly impressive, highlighted by our front cover item, a magnificent “Cambridge” blue Seahorse. An even scarcer stamp is the mint 10/- Cobalt shown on the back cover. Both of these lots have certificates.

The Australian Colonies inludes many fine stamps as well as the next selection of Ken Smithies’ Victorian Postmarks. This section was very strong in auction 10 achieving several outstanding results and the items in auction 11 will be equally popular.

The Australian Commonwealth has another superb selection with everything from monograms and imprints to a wide range of varieties including quite a few plated bi-colour Roos. The Kangaroo specimens are very popular at the moment and we pleased to offer another useful group.

As always there is a terrific range of covers with some very fine stamp usage lots, rare postal rates and desirable First Day Covers and Commemorative covers.

Lack of space prevents any real detail being provideed in the introduction this time but we are confident that you will be pleased and pleasantly surprised with the items we have on offer.

We take a lot of trouble to get our illustrations as close as possible to the lot descriptions so you don’t have to hunt for the illustration. This auction catalogue is the best we have done in that respect.

How to Get the Most from The Phoenix Website.

While quite a number of our clients make full use of the many benefits our website provides, it is obvious that most do not. So we are taking this opportunity to reintroduce these benefits to you.

The homepage provides an introduction to current auction, or highlights of the next auction as appropriate. There are menus on the top left to provide different ways of accessing the auction lots.

Within each auction menu there are six submenus: 1. in Lot Order - this provides you with a lot order index to the auction by section headings. Simply click on the section and it will take you straight to that part of the catalogue where see each lot in order withits full description and all its images. The estimate and starting price and a box for your bids are also displayed. Wherever the starting price is displayed it is always exactly uptodate.

2. By Country - this provides a cross reference listing by country. You don’t need to go backwards and forwards from the index to the catalogue listing anymore.

3. by Topic - the same as by Country but organised by topic or theme, and there are hundreds of themes.

4. Description Search - this is used for wild card searching through auction lots. This is very powerful and to get the most out of it please email us with search requirements so that we can set it up for you.

5. Image Gallery - this displays every image in lot order. It is a great way to browse an auction 6. Bulk Bid Entry - this enables you to enter your bids as a batch. So when you have worked out all your bids you can just enter them on this screen rather than finding each lot and entering them one at a time.

When you sign on with your Client Code and Password the full benefits are opened up to you.

Firstly there are 2 new entries at the top of the auction submenus. these are:

by Collecting Interest - this shows all the lots which match your collecting interests.

My Image Gallery - this provides you with just the images for the lots you are interested in.

We ask you for your collecting interest so that we can provide you with these quick and easy ways to view just those lots that are likely to be of interest to you Secondly there are new menus on the top right. These will vary from person to person and can include any of the following.

1. My Details - this is where you change your details and preferences 2. My Auction 11 Bidsheet - this is the most important screen we have. It appears the instant you enter a bid and it allows you to manage all you bids from the one screen. It always shows the exact status of all your bids.

3.My Auction 11 Vendor Lots - When you are a vendor this screen shows all your lots in this auction with their current status. You always know exactly the situation with your lots.

4. My Mail Register - this shows you the details of every mailing with dates of mailing, registration numbers, mailing addreses and which invoices are involved. It also tells you whther just an invoice was sent or whether your lots were sent as well. Now you don’t need to call us to see if you lots have been mailed. It is all here for you when you need it 5. My Invoice Register - this provides the details of every invoice and you can drill down to every lot on every invoice with their full descriptions and images. You always know exactly what is on every invoice.

6. My Receipt Register - this provides a list of every consignment we have received from you. It shows you every lot from each consignment with its full description and images, what auction it was sold in and if it has not been sold what auction it is in. When you have large consignments spread over multiple auctions it is just the screen to enable you to keep track of everything.

My Auction 11 Bidsheet.

As we said earlier My Auction 11 Bidsheet is the most important part of the website when you have placed bids in the auction, because it provides everything you need to mamage your bidding.

With this screen you can change your bids, add limits to ensure you don’t overspend, enter Credit Card details or other special instructions.

The lot is highlighted when you have the top bid so it is easy to see the current situation with your bids.

As well as being able to modify your bids there is a +5% button which increases your bid to 5% above the current starting price. At the bottom of this webpage there is also a field to gobally increase all your bids by any percentage amount. Very useful when your bids are all way below the starting price or you want to give yourself that extra level of safety.

The website is there to help you get the most when dealing with Phoenix Auctions. We hope you take a little time to use it to your advantage. Remember that we are always happy to help if you have a problem or questions.

Firstly, we have the lot number. If it has a P after the lot number then ithe lots is illustrated in the catalogue. All lots have at least 1 illustration on our website, and many will have multiple illustrations.

The second column contains a symbol, which represents the item(s) in the lot: ** Mint, unmounted o.g. * Mint, mounted o.g.

U Used,quality unspecified W Unused, no gum D Piece Cover, card or Postal Stationery S Stamp (“Postmarks” lots) * The third column gives an overall quality assessment for the lot, from ‘A’ to ‘D’. The same standard applies to mint and used stamps, to covers, postal stationery, literature etc. An item graded ‘A’ is very fine; it has no faults. ‘B’ items are fine and may have minor imperfections. A ‘C’ item will exhibit obvious faults. Items in poor condition are rated ‘D’. Occasionally, an item in truly superb condition will be rated ‘A+’. This grading is used sparingly and is not applied to modern material, which one would normally expect to be in very fine to superb condition.

An otherwise very fine item which has a subsidiary problem may be allocated an ‘A-’. This may be a stamp with writing or a hinge remainder on the reverse. A cover may have a receiver’s endorsement on the face. The halves of a letter card may be stuck together.

A book may have a previous owner’s notations. Whether this factor makes the item an ‘A-’ or ‘B’ is a matter of degree.

The fourth column is relevant to perforated stamps, and also to lots listed under the sub-heading ‘Postmarks’.

For perforated stamps, this column gives a grading for both centring and perforations. The letter ‘A’ to ‘D’ relates to centring. ‘A’ stamps are very well centred; ‘B’ stamps are slightly off-centre; ‘C’ stamps are significantly off-centre, and may have the perforations slightly into the design; ‘D’ stamps are badly off-centre, with the perforations well into the design. [NB: These gradings are the same for all perforated issues, whether Australian Decimals, De La Rue Colonial keyplates or 19th Century American issues. However, it should be understood that for many issues poor centring is the norm. Thus ‘C’, and even ‘D’, gradings should be expected and accepted. For such issues a ‘B’ stamp will be above-average and an ‘A’ stamp will be considered an exceptional copy.]

Following the letter ‘A’ to ‘D’ is a number ‘1’ to ‘4’. A stamp with all perforations intact is ‘1’. One or two short perfs, or normal rough perforations, will drop the grading to ‘2’. More notable perforation problems such as the perfs down one side being trimmed will result in a ‘3’ grading. A stamp with major perforation faults will be a ‘4’. [NB: A stamp graded ‘A1’ is well-centred with all perforations intact. In many cases, particularly with modern issues, this is the norm. However, for many issues, ‘B2’ or even ‘C3’ may be normal and quite acceptable.]

For lots listed under the sub-headings “Postmarks” and “Ship/Paquebot Markings”, this column gives a grading for quality of the strike, and completeness. Quality is graded from ‘A’ (very fine) to ‘D’ (poor). Completeness is graded from ‘1’ (complete) to ‘5’ (identifiable only). ‘+’ is used for superb strikes; ‘-’ is used for postmarks which are lightly struck, a little doubled, or otherwise a bit short of the mark.

The 5th column contains the general description of the of the lot and should be self-evident with one exception. When a catalogue value is extrapolated the value is followed by a ↕, e.g. $2000↕. Typical extrapolations are 40% of the catalogue value for hinged mint when the catalogue only provides values for MUH, 200% for MUH when the catalogue value is for mint hinged.

The following notes apply specifically to postmark description.

Whenever possible postmarks will be described in full, except that the top portion of a postmark is only spelt out when it differs from the post office name or requires some clarification. Bracketed shaded text within a description indicates that these characters cannot be read, while greyed characters are hard to read or are only partly present, as is the case when part of the postmark is on the edge of a stamp. Very large or small letters are represented by large and small fonts respectively; small fonts are particularly used to indicate the presence of small nylon wheels in the datestamp. The following example illustrates these points: '[POST] OFFICE/21DE86/GARAH'.

For postmark lots the condition of the postmark is the most important aspect of our descriptions. Minor defects in the stamp or cover are mentioned only when the value of the item is significant. Naturally, major defects will always be described.

The symbols in the second, third and fourth columns, and the illustrations of lots, form part of the lot description.

The last column is the estimate. The reserve is almost always 75% of the estimate and bids below the reserve will not be considered.

No GST is added to the hammer price. The vendors have accepted responsibility for any tax payable.

The earliest is a registered air cover pre-paying airmail from Perth to Adelaide; other registered and censored noted with a wide range of airmail etiquettes including one 1940 cover with the label obliterated (not jusqu’a), presumably because air service was no longer available. Mostly flown by Imperial Airways, eight involved in delays due to engine or other mecahnical problems, including SE199 where Corio received tail damage at Tiberias (Palestine) 4 Dec 1939, necessitating transfer of mail load to Coogee following day. Flight details lightly pencilled on reverse of covers. Generally good with the expected mixed condition. Scarce lot. (63) B 1934 (17 Sept) registered cover originating at Valence bearing rare franking incl 1926-27 War Orphans Fund 50c+10c pair 120P *G and 5f+1f, endorsed “Londres - Australie/per Sir Alan Cobham/Via Londres”, carried by Cobham in his Airspeed Courier on the 22 Sep 1934 failed attempt to fly non-stop England - India, backstamps of Pondicherry (2, and on front, arrival 30 Sept), Madras (3), Bombay (2) and returned to France (Bouchet - 3 Dec), minor cover blemishes not detracting from this spectacular exhibition item.

The letter dated “1870” in error and comes with a near complete transcription.

Believed to be unique to Samoa, and the earliest airborne jusqu’a airmail item to South Pacific. [The experimental flights were by airship Schwaben and airplane Gelber Hund. The “Zeppelin” endorsement suggests this item was intended to be carried by the airship.]

298P * B 1917 aged registered envelope inscribed “On Active Service” with GB KGV 2d orange Die I and registration label tied ‘ARMY POST OFFICE/A/18MY17/SZ 15’ alongside censor’s violet triangle handstamp and signature same date. To Alexandria, several backstamps include bilinguals and in particular a neat lightly struck skeleton ‘LAK TPO/X/18MY17/DAY MAIL’ (Deir el Belah-Kantara). Very scarce item (opened out for display).

A - use of OAS coloured PPC of ‘A Happy Christmas from the Balkans’ (partisan on his donkey) with imprint ‘SURVEY COY 299P *F RE BSF NO364’ (= Royal Engineers, British Salonika Force) to Tasmania with British ‘ARMY POST OFFICE/B/4DE/17/S.X. 13’ cds used at Eurendzik in Macedonia, minor corner bends. Rare.

D 1918 badly damaged envelope of the ‘SERBIAN RELIEF FUND’ franked KGV 2d orange Die I with this and the scarce No. 300P * 88 registration label tied by ‘FIELD POST OFFICE/A/1P/18/G.X’ (Salonica Greek Orphange), the stamp also cancelled by censor octagonal handstamp. Backstamps include red London registered hooded circle.

B 1919 (Aug 3) PPC Fiume-England inscribed “O.A.S.” with ‘L 14’ Army PO cds and two censor shield handstamps (Nos 4 301P * and 190). Card depicts Fiume Nautical School which was, at the time, Battallion HQ of the 8th Yorks & Lancs, sender a Royal Engineers sapper. Removable pencil notation noting ‘L 14’ Fiume use Jul to Oct 1919, light soiling. Mail from forces in Fiume is very rare, even more so as a doubly censored item. Highly desirable.

GREECE | Postal History B 1847 (Sep 22) entire from Syra with ornate ‘ΣΥΡΑ/22/ΣΕΗΤΕ./1847’ cds alongside boxed Δ11’, backstamp in bright red 307P * equally ornate ‘Trieste./9 OCT./1847’ arr. Some damage around seal, otherwise very good condition for 162-year old.

308P * A 1874 Mourning Letter Piraeus to Milano sent stampless with ‘Piraeus/27/FEB/74’ plus boxed ‘PIROSCAFI/POSTAL/ AUSTRIACI’, ‘PD’ strike which confirmed the ship charges had been paid, but no stamps. Manuscript ‘Via Brindisi’, but went via Corfu, as usual, and in Corfu had 3 Greek stamps affixed, for a magnificent 3-colour franking, used as postage dues, with Corfu transit, Milano arrival and ‘38’ censor. Complete with original message in Greek, makes for a very interesting cover.
