1904 Unadopted JB Cooke Essay in sepia depicting the ‘Viaduct near Adelaide’, one of three Views essays he submitted of which this was the only rejected design for the 1909 State issue (although the design was used 10 years later, on a Commonwealth Letter Card). The essays differ in several aspects to the issued card, notably the font and and length of the horizontal lines dividing the header. The uniqueness of this essay makes it relevant to the first Commonwealth of Australia stationery issue. Also included are the issued card from an alternate view provided by the Railways Dept plus a private postcard circa 1902 which provided the basis for Cooke’s essay. (3)
