The following ten (10) lots comprise higher denomination frankings 1935-39 from the remarkable hoard emanating from Gottfried Rüppel Bremen, Wool Importers, registered to Henry B. Smith Melbourne, Wool Brokers. The covers are generally linen-backed (370x145mm), believed to have contained samples, and accordingly many have blemishes/faults in varying degrees. A skilled restorer could enhance most. The 1934 2Rm Lilienthal and 3Rm Zeppelin, which dominate the frankings, are unchecked for scarcer horizontally ribbed gum. 1944 (Jan 7) tri-censored cover from YMCA Geneve to Melbourne franked 1f70 showing brush mark (at centre tending to the diagonal) from application of copper sulphate solution used by Germans seeking secret messages, censor tapes of Germany, USA, Melbourne, an important item for censorship specialist, the only example of this process to Australia recorded by vendor. 1944 cover from escaped Australian POW by then at Camp d’Internment Militaire, Zurich, sent to family c/o Australia House, London, at 20c concessional airmail rate, stamp tied by the Camp handstamp, subsequently transmitted to NSW without penalty, encountering Berlin (circular ‘Ab’) and Melbourne (tape and handstamp) censors en route, apparent arrival date at destination of ‘29/5/44’ on reverse. Extremely rare registered cover to this destination.

1936 (May & Aug) covers from Tel Aviv to same addressee in Melbourne, carried by Imperial Airways service, earlier endorsed ‘1st bi weekly’, the latter registered, rates of 75m and 73m, backstamped Melbourne, and Tel Aviv, Darwin, Melbourne, Footscray. (2) 1938-39 trio of Empire Air Mail Scheme All-up rate related comprising [1] 1938 (Nov 18) cover Jerusalem to Sydney bearing 15m for combined airmail rate per 10gms, very few recorded to Australia from this origin; [2] 1939 (Feb 5) cover (roughly opened at left) Tel Aviv to Melbourne bearing 10m solo, apparent underpayment for 15m rate, untaxed; and [3] the only recorded 8m postcard rate for this service being a 1939 (Sep 19) use of Stationery 8m Postal card from Haifa to North Sydney, posted two weeks subsequent to cessation of the scheme, but untaxed, censored Palestine and Egypt, latter crucially tying British Par Avion etiquette; exceptional group, worthy of inclusion in the finest of EAMS exhibits. 1940 military selection from Australian servicemen, wide range of British Censor handstamps, ‘BASE CENSOR’ tapes (2), one additionally censored at Melbourne, good range of franking compositions for 60m rate (two double), typically mixed condition for this material, generally good. (21) 1940 unusual censored covers comprising [1] (Feb 28) underfranked at 45m Sarapand to Melbourne with ‘Insufficiently prepaid/for air mail’ handstamp, rare early ‘CENSORED’ and circular ‘2/1 – FIELD AMBULANCE’ (signed) handstamps; [2] a supporting ‘O.A.S.’ cover of the same date with a smaller version of ‘CENSORED’ handstamp, apparently in use for short duration by either the small Advance party or early arrivals from Australian Forces (from Feb 13 1940); and [3] (Nov 13) cover Haifa to Hobart censored at Palestine and bearing scarce early Hobart Censor black tape; first item small corner fault. 1940-45 interesting duo comprising [1] 1940 (Oct 30) Orient Baltic Trading House postcard from Tel Aviv to Melbourne correctly franked 30m for airmail postcard, rare in this era; and [2] 1945 (May 10) use of Stationery 25m Air Letter from Russian Evacuee Mission in Jerusalem to North Sydney, cancelled Ein Karim, Palestinian Censor handstamp. (2) 1941 (Apr 4) Jacob Feuer registered cover (240x155mm) Tel Aviv to Sydney franked aggregate 435m, including very scarce on cover 200m pair, representing 60m combined airmail rate per 10gms x7 plus 15m registration, backstamped Tel Aviv, Haifa, Darwin, Sydney, Chippendale, small cover faults (some adhesions on reverse can be removed with care). The record franking for this era to Australia.
1941 (Jul 1) censored cover from Tel Aviv correctly franked 60m for airmail service to Sydney, instructional marking in Hebrew to effect ‘Too heavy sent by sea’, whereby a misadventure began, encompassing on front handstamped ‘Damaged by Sea Water’, framed ‘MISSENT TO BANGKOK’, three strikes of ‘Damaged By/Sea Water’ (apparently in Thai), reverse with Australian framed ‘RECEIVED IN/THIS CONDITION/FROM ABROAD’ overwritten by ‘No Contents/Wrong Side/was sealed when/censored’. Postal History par excellence.

1934 (20 Jun) cover to rural NSW with ‘Via Singapore/Imperial Airways’ scored-through, franked aggregate 5kr plus New currency 1r50, which would appear to represent UPU 3r (20-40gms) rate plus airmail surcharge 1r50 per 20gms x2 (to Karachi), backstamped Iran and Basra transits, very scarce early item via Imperial Airways service (flight IE274), minor blemishes. 1936 (Nov 18) cover to New Zealand endorsed ‘Via Australia/&/Singapore’ franked aggregate (front and reverse) 10kr60 plus New currency 1r50, apparently for UPU 1r50 rate plus airmail surcharge per 20gms (equivalent of old currency 10kr60), carried via Imperial Airways service flight IE498, which was delayed at Rangoon with damaged undercarriage (Nov 25-26), backstamped Basra, minor blemishes.
1937 (Aug 9) cover to Auckland bearing aggregate franking (front and reverse) 13r plus Old currency 30ch, intended for Imperial Airways service (flight IE573) to Karachi only, where service terminated, the rate for which was then 1r50 per 20gms, backstamped Iran and Basra transits, small handling faults. 1939 (May 21) cover Kaftquel to Sydney franked 5r plus 10ch, apparently intended for airmail service to Europe only, backstamped Abadan.
1942 censored cover from Abadan to Melbourne bearing 10r50 for airmail to India only, where service was terminated, Melbourne Censor tape/handstamp, blemishes. 1942 (Nov 5) censored cover from Khuzistan to Beaudesert Queensland routed via BOAC Horseshoe BasraCalcutta leg (flight IE239), Iran and Basra transit backstamps, Iraqi Censor tape/handstamp, additionally censored Brisbane upon arrival.
