Phoenix Auctions - Saturday 26th October 2013

Page 3

Welcome to Phoenix Auctions No.25 This special auction, dedicated to the Australian Commonwealth issues of the King George V reign, had its genesis in May at the wonderfully successful Australia 2013 Exhibition. Towards the end of the Exhibition we were asked if we would like to auction the newly discovered 1d red Sideways Watermark, naturally we said yes. We decided that this would be a wonderful centrepiece for an auction. We talked to several of our vendors about putting together a special auction and this was met with universal approval. The result is the auction you are now reading. We also decided to make this the second auction of a two-day event, with the Friday 25th October auction being the third and final part of Stuart Hardy’s fantastic Commonwealth of Australia collection. Session 1 begins at 10am. This is the Kangaroo & Map section of the catalogue. With over 450 lots, 190 of which are 5/- to £2, it is one of the more extensive selections offered anywhere. You will find such items as 1d red sideways watermark in both directions for both Die I and Die II, five different states of the 1d red ‘Big Crack’, a rare 1d Die II green colour trial, several CTO strips and blocks, including Brisbane blocks of 4 for the 3d and 6d. There are a range of Monograms up to the 1/-, imprint blocks up to 5/-, a range of watermark inverted including the very rare 3rd Wmk 2d Die IIA. You will find many ‘OS’ perfins including such gems as a mint 1st Wmk 10/- perf small ‘OS’, a 3rd Wmk £1 grey perf ‘OS’ commercially used, 3rd Wmk £2 perf ‘OS’ CTO, and a Small Multi 5/Imprint block of 4 perf ‘OS’ CTO. Plate flaws abound and you will find such gems as a mint 6d with Defective second E of PENCE. There is also a lovely mint 2nd Wmk 2/- brown thin paper and a very rare CTO 3rd Wmk 10/- Misplaced kangaroo perf ‘OS’.

Session 2 will begin at 1pm. It is during this session that we will be auctioning our centrepiece item, the fantastic, newly discovered, 1d red George V Sideways Watermark. This magnificent item is not alone, however, within the remainder of this session you will be able to bid on six different ultra rare 1d red George V Die Proofs. It is unusual to see one of these in an individual auction, to have 6 in one auction is extraordinary. There are even more highlights in the 1d section with a pre-substituted cliché rejoined pair, the unique mint CNE flaw in a block of 4, and a 1d rough paper with No Watermark. After the 1d you will be offered a range of 1½d cracked clichés. Amongst the 2d orange lots there are both a non-perf ‘OS’ Watermark Inverted and an even rarer No Watermark example. There is a very strong group of 4d issues in this section, most of which come from the Pericles collection, Pericles also provided most of the 1/4d lots in this auction as well. Within this magnificent group of 4d issues there two enormously rare Lime-Yellow monograms There is an orange Harrison imprint block of 4. Amongst the 4d violet group are three of the exceptionally rare Colour Trials and a used Line through FOUR PENCE. The 4d ultramarine has a fine group of lots including a mint False ear, and a mint Temple flaw. Imprint blocks of the 4d ultramarine are very rare and we have 3 to offer you. From the Cooke plates there are both one-line and two-line Harrison Imprints and then there is an Imprint from the Harrison plates which also happens to have Inverted Watermark. There are many lots of varieties and many mint blocks, one of the last lots in the 4d is is a very rare CofA Watermark Inverted.

Page 4 George V Period Australian Commonwealth Issues In the balance of the Georgian Head lots are 1d green CofA Watermark Reversed, 1d ovptd ‘OS with both inverted and reversed watermarks, a mint CofA 1/4d Deep Turquoise, a Small Multi P14 1/4d block of 4 CTO, The George V Commemoratives are highlighted by by 2 complete sheets of 15 of the Kookaburra M/S, one mint and the other used, there are CTO Kingsford Smith ‘OS’ imprint blocks of 4. The 5/Bridge is well represented with two on cover, one of which is a remarkable, and probably unique block of 4. A rarely seen 1/- Large Kookaburra plate dot block of 4 is also in this session. A little group of Postal Stationery finishes the auction and here you will find a 4d orange Wool Sample Envelope, a 1d red Die II complete wrapper and a pair of 1d red Roo Die II envelopes with their original wrapper.

HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM OUR CATALOGUE

[These notes are offered as a guide to understanding the information given as symbols.] 1. 2.

3.

Firstly, we have the lot number. If it has a P after the lot number then ithe lots is illustrated in the catalogue. All lots have at least 1 illustration on our website, and many will have multiple illustrations. The second column contains a symbol, which represents the item(s) in the lot: ** Mint, unmounted o.g. * Mint, mounted o.g. V Used, Very fine. F Used, Fine G Used, Good H Used, Heavy U Used, quality unspecified W Unused, no gum D Piece * Cover, card or S Stamp (“Postmarks” lots) PS Postal Stationery B Booklets or Booklet Panes The 3rd column contains the general description of the lot and should be self-evident with one exception. When a catalogue value is extrapolated the value is followed by a ↕, e.g. $2000↕. Typical extrapolations are 40% of the catalogue value for hinged mint when the catalogue only provides values for MUH, 200% for MUH when the catalogue value is for mint hinged. The following notes apply specifically to postmark description. Whenever possible postmarks will be described in full, except that the top portion of a postmark is only spelt out when it differs from the post office name or requires some clarification. Bracketed shaded text within a description indicates that these characters cannot be read, while greyed characters are hard to read or are only partly present, as is the case when part of the postmark is on the edge of a stamp. Very large or small letters are represented by large and small fonts respectively; small fonts are particularly used to indicate the presence of small nylon wheels in the datestamp. The following example illustrates these points: '[POST] OFFICE/21DE86/GARAH'. After the forscription of the postmark we will indicate the overall quality of the cancel with a bracketed 2 character code. The first character is A-D where A is a fine clear postmark through to D which is barely legible. The second character is a number from 1 to 4 where 1 is complete including all the frame through to 4 where only 25% or less of the cancel is visible. For exceptional strikes we will further qualify the quality code with a ‘+’ and for items which are light etc the code will be qualified with a ‘-’. For postmark lots the condition of the postmark is the most important aspect of our descriptions. Minor defects in the stamp or cover are mentioned only when the value of the item is significant. Naturally, major defects will always be described.

4.

The symbols in the second column, and the illustrations of lots, form part of the lot description.

5.

The last column is the estimate. The reserve is almost always 75% of the estimate and bids below the reserve will not usually be considered.

6.

No GST is added to the hammer price. The vendors have accepted responsibility for any tax payable.

7.
