1d Red Shades on 5 hagners in issue year order and identified by ‘G’ numbers from ‘G10’-’33’ and ‘G60’-’77’. Allocations include ‘G24’, ‘24½’, ‘25’, ‘32’, ‘64’-’66’, ‘71’ &’77’ which we have no reason to doubt but which we have not validated. We did note a Western Australia 1d Swan in the place assigned to ‘G27’ (presumably becaused this “matches” the legendary salmon eosin UV reaction) and a couple obviously rough paper (one ‘OS’ perfin) not where they ought to be. Wonderful mainly fine to very fine presentation; if all accurately identified, cat in excess of $1,400. (33) 1d Red Smooth and Semi-Surfaced Paper Shades Collection specialists major assembly from Line Perf shades x34 (G1 & G2, incl two pairs), then various quantities in the G10 to G33 range with many better identified as numbers G11 x79, G12 x24, G23 x30, G23½ x19, G24 x10, G24½ x12, G25 x3, G32 x12 as well, of course, of greater quantities more common shades (eg G10 x248, G18 x338, G30 x248). Just the scarcer ones noted (and the line perfs) cat well over a humungous $10,000! Summary list included, terrific value. (c2,300) 1d Reds on stack of partially remaindered album leaves Smooth & Rough papers (including Die IIs) with heaps of annotated varieties, a few Die IIIs, lots of shades with 1917-18 dated examples & perf ‘OS’ issues; also a few 1d violets & 1d greens; postmark interest likely. Hours of enjoyment for the specialist. Good lot. (100s) 1d Reds Dated Collection September 5 1914 to Dec 1918 with some Sundays seen, plus oddments to April 1921. Just the odd rough paper, few perf ‘OS’, huge range of shades, wide range datestamp types (eg SA squared circles, Melbourne numerals, Ship Mail Room, TPO). No obvious duplication, unchecked for varieties. (c870) 1d Reds, 2½kg on Paper (plus some off-paper in two envelopes) with smooth & rough papers & perf ‘OS’ issues. Although it has passed through the hands of specialist collectors there is still heaps off potential for shades & varieties and it is unlikely to have been checked for postmarks having sighted Yerra (Qld) & Camden Haven (NSW - datestamp not recorded in Commonwealth period) and a few numerals in a sample handful. Estimate will probably prove to be extremely conservative. Seldom offered in such quantity these days. Ex “The Italian Hoard”. (1,000s)

Background Notes about the One Penny Georgian Head Die Proofs On 30/12/13 Perkins Bacon was awarded the contract to produce a number of steel dies and from these to produce four printing plates of the 1d. Seymour Bennett, the Inspector of Stamps from Somerset House, was appointed by the Australian Government to oversee the contract and to ensure the quality of the work. It was decided that Fred Pearce from De La Rue would be employed under private contract to engrave the dies for Perkins Bacon. As a consequence of this arrangement there are De La Rue die proofs which are actually engraver’s proofs used by the engraver to check on the quality and development of the die. At various times the die was transfered to Perkins Bacon and Perkins Bacon produced their own proofs which were supplied, via Seymour Bennett, to Australia House for comment and approval. When the final state 4 die proof was approved, Seymour Bennett personally pulled a set of proofs which were cut-down and stuck on buff presentation cards.
For the following six lots we have shown the image of the whole card on the left and an enlargement of the die on the right

1d Carmine-Red Sideways Watermark BW #71Aa(a), centred to the base, minor blemishes with shallow thin under ‘OS’ of ‘POSTAGE’, Leichardt ‘9NO14’ cds. A recent discovery by a Scottish dealer and the only recorded example. Reserved at $75,000. Michael Drury Certificate (2013) additionally signed by George Henze, Scott Starling, David Terrington & Geoff Wotherspoon. [This exciting new discovery was found in a general Australia collection bought at auction in Scotland. The buyer, an Ebay trader listed the stamp (along with many others from the collection) at a starting price of 99p describing the sideways watermark but blissfully unaware of its significance. He was subsequently contacted by a couple of experienced collectors who explained that no such watermark variety was known to exist. He sensibly de-listed the item and sought the advice of the proprietor of Kinross Stamp Auctions who upon examination of the stamp realised that it may be a significant new discovery. He in turn made contact with British dealer Ian Perry, a highly respected specialist dealer in Australian stamps, to act as agent in the knowledge that Ian would be attending the recently held ‘Australia 2013’ Stamp Show in Melbourne. At the show Ian presented the stamp to leading KGV specialists in attendence with a view to obtaining a certificate. Having achieved a good certificate, and fully aware of Phoenix Auctions’ recent runaway successes with the Stuart Hardy KGV & Kangaroo auctions, he consigned this unique item to us confident in the knowledge that we will give this wonderful new find the greatest possible exposure.] $80,000
