1885 (Apr 20) use of GB 1d pink embossed postal stationary envelope postmarked ‘BRITISH ARMY POST OFFICE/A/AP20/85/ EGYPT’ by Corporal G. Watt, a serving member of the NSW Infantry Contingent, A Company, in the Suakim Campaign in Sudan after General Gordon’s death at the hands of the Mahdi following the capture of Khartoum in January that year. The envelope is countersigned A Paul, Lieut Col. Commanding N.S.W. Infantry and addressed to Guildford, NSW where it arrived May 27 (b/ ss). Aged and some foxing does not detract from a relic of the first Australians ever to serve abroad. Anecdotal evidence suggests perhaps only half a dozen covers exist, even pieces have realised over $400. Very rare.
