Phoenix Auctions - 11th December 2015
Welcome to Phoenix Auctions Auction No.42 This is our seventh, and final auction Auction for 2015 and it is a normal size of just under 1,200 lots. Our ever popular Boxlot auction will be held at 3pm on Thursday 10th December. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our clients and vendors for their support during the year and to wish everyone a happy and prosperous Festive Season and New Year. Our first employee, Ron Ronchetti, has decided to to call it a day. We would like to thank Ron for all the conributions he has made to our Phoenix Auctions and to wish him all the best in his retirement. With the Holidays coming up we would like to get our despatch done as soon as possible. It does help our despatch processing flow for customers who intend to pay by credit card to indicate this on your bidsheet, also double-check that we have your card details. On the subject of holidays, our office will be closed from Noon 22nd December and we will re-open on 4th January. This also seems an opportune time to remind clients that we do have a Live Bidding window on our website. It becomes available 20 minutes before the auction starts. You must be using either Google Chrome or Safari for it to work properly. This small window displays the last lot sold, the current lot and the next two lots. It provides a bid button for the next valid bid and it will display the description in bold if you have bid on this lot. When you have the top bid the button disappears. If you would like more information don’t hesitate to ask, preferably before auction day. So take the time to examine the catalogue and you may find something which may be an ideal present for yourself. As we like to say, there is something for almost everyone in this auction. Box Lot Auction #1507 starts at 3:00pm on Thursday 10th Session 1 will start at 10:30am on Friday 11th and contains our normal Rest of World Lots plus the Australian Colonies lots Session 2 will start no earlier than 1:00pm and contains the Kangaroo and KGV Sideface Lots Session 3 will start no earlier than 3:00pm and contains the balance of the Australian Lots including Postal Stationery, Postal History and finishes with the Australian Territories. 1852 (Jul 13) entire to London with 3d yellow-green Sydney View SG #42 margins close (just touching top right) to large tied by Sydney bars cancel, rated “8”, per “Sapphire” with fine ‘SHIP LETTER/(crown)/JY13/1852/SYDNEY’ departure datestamp in black, London ‘20NO20/1852’ arrival datestamp in red. Fine condition. 1868 First Royal Visit (10 Feb) use of Government House, Sydney, envelope (embossed on flap), addressed in hand of H.R.H. Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, second son of Victoria and Albert, to Richard Hengist Horne (nom de plume of poet, Richard Henry Horne), warden of Blue Mountain Goldfield, Trentham, Victoria, bearing Diadem 6d tied by Sydney duplex. Horne had celebrated with a cantata, Galatea Secunda, the arrival in the Colonies of the Prince. An endorsement, “From Prince Alfred”, possibly in Horne’s hand, appears on reverse of cover. Four weeks after this item was posted, during this first Royal Visit to the Colonies, and whilst attending a picnic at Clontarf, the Prince was shot at close range, the bullet entering about two inches to right of his spine. A team of six nurses, trained by Florence Nightingale, attended upon the Prince, who recovered from the incident within a fortnight. This was Australia’s first conventional assassination attempt. Accompanying are photocopies of biographies and photographs of the Prince, and Horne, and reproduction of cabinet photo of Prince late in life, signed and with handwritten details. [Aside from the importance of this item historically, and its particular desirability to Royal Visit specialists, there is considerable philatelic significance attached. Prince Alfred was one of the early philatelists in the Royal Family; he was elected honorary president of The Philatelic Society, London, in 1890. This is believed to have inspired his nephew, George, later King George V, who benefited from the sale by Alfred of his collection to his brother, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). This merging of collections gave birth to the Royal Philatelic Collection.]
