Welcome to Phoenix Auctions Auction No.31 Welcome to our fifth auction for 2014. At this stage we are planning on conducting a further three before the end of 2014. The auction for Roland Geitenbeek’s truly stunning Victorian Woodblocks collection has been scheduled for Saturday 25th October. This is a firm date so you can plan your travel arrangements with confidence. We will also be visiting Stampex in London again. This is held at the Business Design Centre in Islington and is open from 17th to 20th of September. We will be in our usual area at Booth 20. Visitors to our stand will be able to view the lots for Roland’s auction. We are looking forward to meeting new and old friends at the show. Collectors of Australian KGV stamps will be pleased to know that the new, and much anticipated, Brusden White KGV catalogue is almost finished. We can expect some significant price rises when this occurs and as a consequence now is probably a good time to buy those items you need for your collection.

With 1347 lots we will begin the auction at 10:00am, this will still ensure that our room bidders can leave the City before it gets dark. This auction has been split into our usual 3 sessions. The morning session is completely taken up with 516 lots of Non-Philatelic and Rest of World. The Cinderella section is composed entirely of Lord Howe Island Zemail and Departure Tax lots. The Ephemera sections has a number of Airline related lots including a group of Flying Boat photos and PPCs. The British Commonwealth countries are a good proportion of this session and include another useful selection of more difficult variety and Specimen lots. The small but useful Canada section includes our lovely front cover item, a 1932 5c MUH block of 4 imperf vertically. There are some very difficult and exotic GB. The Las Bela sheet offered in the last auction was extremely popular and a similar complete sheet is being offered in this auction. There are some interesting lots of foreign with a useful range of France and Germany, some useful China. Session 2 starts at 12:30pm, it begins with the Australian Colonies and ends with the KGV Heads. The Colonies section has a nice range of stamps, proofs, specimens, postal history, stationery, quite a few revenues and, of course, postmarks. One of the high-lights would be a Queensland 1860 1d with enormous margins. There is also a very rare group of Victorian 1887 Railway stamps and several very rare Specimens.

The Australian Commonwealth section begins with a number of rare State/Roo combination covers. There are quite a few variety lots, specimens and the ever-popular CTO lots. There are also several large blocks including and 6d blue Die IIB MUH block of 20, a 2d red-brown Die I MUH block of 24, a 3d blue CofA complete MUH sheet of 120 and a 4d olive CofA MUH block of 40. We begin session 3 at 3:00pm with the balance of the Australian lots and then finish with the Australian Territories and ex-Territories. Included in the Decimals section is a lovely proof of the 1984 50c Christmas but with 30c as the value, there is also a spectacular block of 24 of the 1984 43c Skateboarding showing various amounts of Missing cyan. After the Stationery there is a good range of FDCs including a good selection of rare Rawlinson Postmaster General’s covers from the 1960s. There are also several elusive 1930s Commemorative covers, several of which have been registered. The Australian Territories at the end of this session has a very rare Nauru 10/- Seahorse with Double ovpt and the PNG unissued 1985 Ceremonial Dwellings in MUH blocks of 4. As you can see there is something for almost everyone in this auction. We hope you enjoy reading it.

My Auction 31 Bidsheet. As mentioned earlier My Auction Bidsheet is the most important part of the website when you have placed bids in the auction, because it provides everything you need to manage your bidding. With this screen you can change your bids, add limits to ensure you don’t overspend, enter Credit Card details or other special instructions. And it always shows you the current status of your bids. The lot is highlighted when you have the top bid so it is easy to see the current situation with your bids. As well as being able to modify your bids there is a +5% button which increases your bid to 5% above the current starting price. At the bottom of this webpage there is also a field to globally increase all your bids by any percentage amount. Very useful when your bids are all way below the starting price or you want to give yourself that extra level of safety. The website is there to help you get the most when dealing with Phoenix Auctions. We hope you take a little time to use it to your advantage. Remember that we are always happy to help if you have a problem or questions.

How to Get the Most from The Phoenix Website While quite a number of our clients make full use of the many benefits our website provides, it is obvious that most do not. So we are taking this opportunity to reintroduce these benefits to you. The homepage provides an introduction to current auction, or highlights of the next auction as appropriate. There are menus on the top left to provide different ways of accessing the auction lots. Within each auction menu there are six submenus: 1. In Lot Order - this provides you with a lot order index to the auction by section headings. Simply click on the section and it will take you straight to that part of the catalogue where you can see each lot in order with its full description and all its images. The estimate and starting price and a box for your bids are also displayed. Wherever the starting price is displayed it is always exactly uptodate. 2. By Country - this provides a cross reference listing by country. You don’t need to go backwards and forwards from the index to the catalogue listing anymore. 3. By Topic or Theme - the same as by Country but organised by topic or theme, and there are hundreds of themes. 4. Description Search - this is used for wild card searching through auction lots. This is very powerful and to get the most out of it please email us with search requirements so that we can set it up for you. 5. Image Gallery - this displays every image in lot order. It is a great way to browse an auction. 6. Bulk Bid Entry - this enables you to enter your bids as a batch. So when you have worked out all your bids you can just enter them on this screen rather than finding each lot and entering them one at a time. When you sign on with your Client Code and Password the full benefits are opened up to you. There are 2 entries at the top of the auction submenus. These are: By Collecting Interest - this shows all the lots which match your collecting interests. My Image Gallery - this provides you with just the images for the lots you are interested in. We ask you for your collecting interest so that we can provide you with these quick and easy ways to view just those lots that are likely to be of interest to you. Secondly there are new menus on the top right. These will vary from person to person and can include any of the following:1. My Details - this is where you change your details and preferences 2. My Auction Bidsheet - this is the most important screen we have. It appears the instant you enter a bid and it allows you to manage all you bids from the one screen. It always shows the exact status of all your bids. 3. My Auction Vendor Lots - When you are a vendor this screen shows all your lots in this auction with their current status. You always know exactly the situation with your lots. 4. My Mail Register - this shows you the details of every mailing with dates of mailing, registration numbers, mailing addresses and which invoices are involved. It also tells you whether just an invoice was sent or whether your lots were sent as well. Now you don’t need to call us to see if your lots have been mailed. It is all here for you when you need it. 5. My Invoice Register - this provides the details of every invoice and you can drill down to every lot on every invoice with their full descriptions and images. You always know exactly what is on every invoice. 6. My Receipt Register - this provides a list of every consignment we have received from you. It shows you every lot from each consignment with its full description and images, what auction it was sold in and if it has not been sold what auction it is in. When you have large consignments spread over multiple auctions it is just the screen to enable you to keep track of everything.

How to Get the Most from Our Catalogue These notes are offered as a guide to understanding the information given as symbols. 1.

Firstly, we have the lot number. Most lots have at least one illustration in the catalogue and on our website many will have multiple illustrations.

2.

The second column contains a symbol, which represents the item(s) in the lot: ** Mint, unmounted o.g. * Mint, mounted o.g. V Used, Very fine. F Used, Fine G Used, Good H Used, Heavy U Used, quality unspecified W D Unused, no gum Piece * Cover, card or S Stamp (“Postmarks” lots) PS Postal Stationery B Booklets or Booklet Panes

3.

The 3rd column contains the general description of the lot and should be self-evident with one exception. When a catalogue value is extrapolated the value is followed by a ↕, e.g. $2000↕. Typical extrapolations are 40% of the catalogue value for hinged mint when the catalogue only provides values for MUH, 200% for MUH when the catalogue value is for mint hinged. The following notes apply specifically to postmark description. Whenever possible postmarks will be described in full, except that the top portion of a postmark is only spelt out when it differs from the post office name or requires some clarification. Bracketed shaded text within a description indicates that these characters cannot be read, while greyed characters are hard to read or are only partly present, as is the case when part of the postmark is on the edge of a stamp. Very large or small letters are represented by large and small fonts respectively; small fonts are particularly used to indicate the presence of small nylon wheels in the datestamp. The following example illustrates these points: '[POST] OFFICE/21DE86/GARAH'. After the forscription of the postmark we will indicate the overall quality of the cancel with a bracketed 2 character code. The first character is A-D where A is a fine clear postmark through to D which is barely legible. The second character is a number from 1 to 4 where 1 is complete including all the frame through to 4 where only 25% or less of the cancel is visible. For exceptional strikes we will further qualify the quality code with a ‘+’ and for items which are light etc the code will be qualified with a ‘-’. For postmark lots the condition of the postmark is the most important aspect of our descriptions. Minor defects in the stamp or cover are mentioned only when the value of the item is significant. Naturally, major defects will always be described.

4.

The symbols in the second column, and the illustrations of lots, form part of the lot description.

5.

The last column is the estimate. The reserve is almost always 75% of the estimate and bids below the reserve will not usually be considered.

6.

No GST is added to the hammer price. The vendors have accepted responsibility for any tax payable.

7.

We use the following standardised abbreviations: o.g. original gum opt(d) overprint(ed) d/s datestamp cds circular datestamp h/s handstamp mss manuscript; handwritten ERD earliest recorded date LRD latest recorded date o/o opened-out RLabel registration label M/S(s) miniature sheet(s) PPC picture postcard impt imprint mtd mounted provl provisional wmk watermark LDL large dateline (postmarks) SDL small dateline (postmarks) TLC,TRC,LLC,LRC Top Left Cnr, Top Right Cnr, Lower Left Cnr, Lower Right Cnr

(3) GERMAN STATES | Schelswig-Holstein | Postal History 174 1842 (May 6 & July 4) postal rates and procedures releases by the Copenhagen Postal Authorities (Schleswig-Hostein was a dukedom of Denmark at the time) - on May 6 regarding newspapers and other printed matter, on July 4 regarding packet (parcel) rates. Both typically ornate documents written in German, the first rather more so than the second (which was just a procedural modification). (2) GERMAN STATES | Wurttemberg | Postal History 175 * 1700 (Aug 7) entire to Remingen under the authority of Eberhard Ludwig, 10th Duke of Wurttemburg, and over the signatures of - perhaps - two of his council; plus 1709 (Feb 23) also to Remingen, an ornate printed order (or proclamation), again over two signatures (one clearly Pistorius), this time listing the Duke’s military appointments (General, Field Marshall, General of the Cavalry), very ornate embossed Crown over Shield oval seal. Historic duo in amazing condition over 300 years later. [Thanks to Wikipedia, we are able to include a potted history of the Duke (apparently not a particularly serious fellow)] (2) 176 * 1811 (Aug 7) partly opened out entire to Carlsruhe postmarked single line ‘Nr-THAILFINGEN’ (abbreviation for the small town now spelled ‘NECKARTAILFINGEN’). Quite early (exact date taken from entire’s contents). Early 19th Century outer to Stuttgart with single line unboxed ‘EHINGEN’ in red, closure is a waxed embossed Crown over 177 * Shield with surrounding inscription ‘KONIGL:’ at left and ‘EHINGEN’ at right.

1920 (May 7) cover Paris to Timaru New Zealand endorsed ‘Par Avion – Paris : Londres’ and bearing early black on salmon ‘Par Avion’ etiquette, franked (both sides) 10c x33 (few with faults) for aggregate 3f30c (overpaid 5c for 3f25 rate), 2f of which was attributed to the Paris-London airmail service surcharge, departing London May 19 on P & O Kyber arriving Sydney early June from where it was transferred to steamer bound for New Zealand. This is the earliest commercial international airmail service item to New Zealand. [Of far greater philatelic significance than the Aug 1920 cover carried by Parer & McIntosh claimed to be the first “ordinary” airmail letter to Australia (from Straits Settlements), franked at 4c for surface rate only and was not carried by an official airmail service yet still realised $14,375 at a Melbourne auction in 2011]

1932 (Nov 11) cover Willesden to Christchurch New Zealand with typewritten route instructions ‘Per Air Mail/across U.S.A. or/ Canada. Per first/available steamer from/San Francisco or Vancouver to/New Zealand’, franked 1/- for Empire letter 2d (1-2ozs.) plus airmail surcharge 2½d per ½oz x4, blemishes, the only example of this early utilisation of North American airmail services to New Zealand noted by vendor. [UPU regulations from Jul 1 1930 governed the transit of mail by overseas air service, and use of the Par Avion etiquette and the airmail service to be used could be expressed. An alternative to the London-Karachi service for air acceleration for New Zealand bound mails was to utilise the Canadian or USA airmail services to connect with New Zealand bound steamers, delivering a time saving of about one week over the surface route.]
