6d Black block of 15 reconstructed from a block of 9 [Pos 38-40,43-45,48-50], block of 4 [Pos 4142,46-47] and a pair [Pos 36-37] SG #102. Few stain spots on reverse, some of which show through to the face, but condition is generally very fine. The piece has an official knife slit between the 2nd and 3rd columns to correct an off-centre line of perforations, and traces of the marginal imprint appear along the base, Cat £4,825++. The block of 9 is Ex Lee, Purves and Perry and is the largest recorded multiple, The block of 4 (Ex Burrus) is one of only two known, the other being in the Royal collection. The premier surviving piece of this very difficult stamp. If this lot is unsold it will be re-offered as its individual components in the next three lots. 6d Black pair [Pos 36-37] SG #102 from the previous UNSOLD reconstructed from a block of 15. 6d Black, block of 4 [Pos 41-42,46-47] SG #102, from the previous UNSOLD reconstructed block of 15. Condition is generally very fine. This piece has an official knife slits at the top and right edge to correct an off-centre line of perforations, Cat £1,300++. This block of 4 (Ex Burrus) is one of only two known, the other being in the Royal collection. 6d Black block of 9 [Pos 38-40,43-45,48-50] SG #102, from the previous UNSOLD reconstructed block of 15. 6d Black SG #102 reconstruction of the hand-engraved plate of 50, including six pairs, Pos 36 duplicated and Pos 2 with portion of marginal imprint. Condition well above average for this stamp and many fine examples included. For this stamp the two blocks of 25 were reversed compared to their positions in the orange printings, and two impressions were fitted on the sheet of watermarked paper, one above the other with a marginal imprint inserted between the upper and lower blocks. The finest of the very few reconstructions which have been achieved. (51 stamps).

Comprising used examples from the base of the upper block [Pos 48, 49, 50, 22, 23] and from the top of the lower block [Pos 28, 29, 30, 1, 2, 3], missing only [Pos 21.] A very difficult reconstruction to assemble, and this is the most complete one available. Large part of back flap missing and reverse with other faults, and small piece of envelope missing at top (repaired). Underpaid for Marseilles routing, and ‘Deficient Postage/Fine ______’ in red applied on arrival, and 9d collected from the addressee. The postage should have been 9d for a ¼oz letter, so a charge of 6d (2d deficient plus 4d fine) should have been the correct charge. A unique 6d black usage. Ex Forster and Perry.

6d Lilac and Green [Pos 9] SG #33 overprinted ‘SPECIMEN’ Type 10, part original gum, and faint horizontal crease of no significance. Produced in 1879 when a number of obsolete Victorian stamps were overprinted with the contemporary handstamp. Two examples now exist, the other being in the Royal Collection. A third was known in the Purves collection but was destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bushfires. This stamp must rank as one of the most important and desirable Victorian Specimen stamps. Since no multiples are known from this printing, it is not possible to advance the plating of the groups far, and the overprints have been arbitrarily divided into groups of 25, termed Sub-types 3 and 4 for those on Die 1 stamps. 1/- Rose-Pink and Blue Die 2, SG #34 reconstruction of the hand-engraved plate of 25 with Type 1B overprints, lacking only [Pos 4 and 8]. Condition much above average for this scarce stamp, with only several stamps touched, and including four rouletted stamps. The Die 2 plate was used in conjunction with the Die 1 plate for the second and third printings. In the second printing, it is found in conjunction with the Type 1A and 1B overprints. The Die 2 reconstruction offered here is the only one in existence at any reasonable level of completion and offers a unique opportunity for the advanced collector. (23 stamps).
