6d Black SG #102 reconstruction of the hand-engraved plate of 50, including six pairs, Pos 36 duplicated and Pos 2 with portion of marginal imprint. Condition well above average for this stamp and many fine examples included. For this stamp the two blocks of 25 were reversed compared to their positions in the orange printings, and two impressions were fitted on the sheet of watermarked paper, one above the other with a marginal imprint inserted between the upper and lower blocks. The finest of the very few reconstructions which have been achieved. (51 stamps).

6d Black [Pos 37] SG #102 used with 1d Emblems Wmk ‘ONE PENNY’ (SG #98a) on 1861 (Jul 25) cover from Melbourne to Newport, England per Northam via Marseilles. Large part of back flap missing and reverse with other faults, and small piece of envelope missing at top (repaired). Underpaid for Marseilles routing, and ‘Deficient Postage/Fine ______’ in red applied on arrival, and 9d collected from the addressee. The postage should have been 9d for a ¼oz letter, so a charge of 6d (2d deficient plus 4d fine) should have been the correct charge. A unique 6d black usage. Ex Forster and Perry.

Stamps show typical staining from the dark gum used on this issue, and cover with a few stain spots, but a rare usage being the equal largest recorded franking of this stamp on entire. 6d Lilac and Green [Pos 9] SG #33 overprinted ‘SPECIMEN’ Type 10, part original gum, and faint horizontal crease of no significance. Produced in 1879 when a number of obsolete Victorian stamps were overprinted with the contemporary handstamp. Two examples now exist, the other being in the Royal Collection. A third was known in the Purves collection but was destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bushfires. This stamp must rank as one of the most important and desirable Victorian Specimen stamps. 1/- Rose-Pink and Blue Die 1, SG #34 partial reconstruction of the hand-engraved plate of 25 with Sub-type 3 overprints. The stamps are much above average quality and mostly free of faults, except several are touched or just cut into. For the third printing, the Die 1 and 2 plates were used together, with a new overprint forme of 100 which finished the sheet in one operation. The four blocks of 25 comprising the overprint plate are termed Types 2A and 2B (on Die 1) and Types 2C and 2D (on Die 2). Since no multiples are known from this printing, it is not possible to advance the plating of the groups far, and the overprints have been arbitrarily divided into groups of 25, termed Sub-types 3 and 4 for those on Die 1 stamps. 1/- Rose-Pink and Blue Die 1 [Pos 13] SG #34 from the 2nd printing with Type 1A overprint used with 6d dull orange Woodblock (SG #32a) on 1858 (Jan 11) cover from Yackandandah to Ireland. Reverse with manuscript “Yackandandah/11/1/58” due to datestamp being away to have the year date altered, adhesives cancelled Barred Numeral ‘114’ and with ‘Crown/REGISTERED’ and ‘d6’ handstamps applied on arrival in London. A very significant usage, since the 1/- Registered was officially discontinued on January 5 12 1858 and this cover is the only recorded use of the stamp after that date. [6d ship letter rate to UK plus 1/- registration fee.]

Condition much above average for this scarce stamp, with only several stamps touched, and including four rouletted stamps. The Die 2 plate was used in conjunction with the Die 1 plate for the second and third printings. In the second printing, it is found in conjunction with the Type 1A and 1B overprints. 1/- Rose-Pink and Blue Die 2, SG #34 used with 1d dull red Campbell & Fergusson Half-Lengths (x2) and 6d dull orange Woodblock (SG #26b,32a) on 1856 (May 12) front from Carisbrook to Melbourne. Adhesives with small margins (1d, 6d just touched) all cancelled by manuscript “stars” (the 6d just tied). Carisbrook PO opened November 1 1855, but was apparently delayed in receiving its Barred Oval, hence the use of manuscript cancellation. Unusual and very attractive. Ex Pack.
